Hello all,
I've been playing the game for about a week now and am enjoying it very much. I've decided to become a miner and have decided on the Osprey as my ship of choice. I was just curious though since there are 4 high power slots on the ship should I affix more than 1 mining laser or would that be pointless? Also if anyone has any Osprey Fitting Ideas I would love to hear them. (I'm still new to the game and knowing which components work well and which dont would save me plenty of training time.) Thanks in advance.

You definitely want more than one mining laser. 2 lasers double your efficiency, 3 lasers triple it and so forth. At least as long as you can provide the cap.
I would recommend using as many lasers as you can in regards to cap. Depends greatly on how you are planning to mine. Rats in high sec are rather weak so you should do well with less guns but lowsec you need guns and mates to stay safe.

Bear in mind the Osprey only has 3 turret slots, so you can only fit 3 mining lasers on it.
I'd recommend an assault launcher on the last slot as nearly all high sec rats are frigates.
If you're planning to mine seriously though, go for a mining barge.

Could you make any sugestions with regard to a decent Caldari Mining barge? sorry for the noob questions but I gotsta ask.

Mining barges are all same for different races. Check their section in item database to see the list.

Based on your experience level, I suggest you start with the Bantam. It gives 20% bonus per level for mining. Fit it with 2 Miner Is. Train your mining up to level 4, and then train your Frigate skill up to level 4. Run back and forth to your station and sell the ore. It won't take long to build up enough cash to buy the Industrial skill and a Badger. Then you can jetcan mine to accumulate enough ore to fill the Badger. Now you're making cash faster. When you're able, replace your Miner Is with Miner IIs. Now the cash is rolling in. Pretty soon you can buy the Cruiser skill and an Osprey. The Osprey offers the same bonus as the Bantam. Train the Cruiser skill to level 4, or 5 if you feel like you have the time. Fit the Osprey with 3 Miner IIs. 3 is all you can get on it. Pretty soon you're rolling in dough.

Thats great advice :) I've almost got my Miner 2's now and I'm going to mine like heck for about a week while I finish getting trained up with my Osprey skills by then I should have the cash saved to get it. Thanks for the advice Gadfly.

When you have the skills get a Moa for mining; plenty of turets and power. Also it has drone space so with drone skills you can let the drones handle most of the fighting. Prob best fit a heavey/siege launcher and maybe an invulnerability field or two to keep you alive while you take the rats out.
Have you got Indy skills yet? If not then I highly recommend you get them. Means you can mine a whole load then pick it up with your indy (just after you clear a rat spawn is a good time to haul)

Mik's Beginner mining guide
Firstly, you need to train a set of basic skills in order to enjoy the game. Training the learning skills is very important but does not make a significant difference until you are training a skill to 4 or 5. Up to 3 the time is too short to worry about. Sooo I recommend the following - note that I am using minmatar ships as the example though each race has similar equivalents:
1. Buy a frigate suitable for mining. An example is the Burst which has the following benefits:
Hi slots: 2 (fit two mining lasers) Low slots: 1 (fit one cargo expander) Grid: 15mw CPU: 140tf Cargo capacity: 225 m3 Special ability: 20% bonus to mining laser yield per level AND 5% bonus to cargo capacity per level.
Fitting: 2x EPS Gaussian I Excavation Pulse (51 cpu and 2mw grid - 42 units of yield) Cargo Expander I (18% increase of cargo space)
Skills:
FIRST ROUND: Minmatar Frigate to 3: gives 15% bonus to cargo and 60% bonus to yield in a Burst. Mining to 3: gives 15% bonus to yield Mechanic to 1: allows learning of Hull Upgrades Hull Upgrades to 1: allows use of cargo expander Industry to 1: allows you to learn refining Refining to 3: 6% less waste in refining
This will take approximately 24 hours to learn. At the end of this you will have the following: Cargo space: 305m3 Yield per minute: 154 units per minute Refining bonus: 6%
ROUND TWO It is now time to look at making your mining more efficient. Up til now you have been mining into your hold and running back and forth to your station every time your hold fills up. The next step is to mine into a jettisoned can (JetCan). While this leaves your ore vulnerable to thieves it saves a heap of time, even if you have losses. And time is money. A jetcan can take 27,000 m3 and lasts for an hour before it dies. So if you mine into it for 45 minutes you then have 15 minutes to transport it back home. (note you can create a new can and transfer material from one to the other). However, to haul this large amount you need to have an industrial ship like a hoarder. Having a week's profit under your belt now you should be able to afford to buy one.
Minmatar Frigate 3 - already have Spaceship Command 3 - ~10 hours Minmatar Industrial 2 - ~8 hours
The ship will get a 10% bonus to cargo and max velocity due to the skills so it will have: Cargo hold: 5610m3 Add 3 cargo expanders (18% each): 9217m3
This means that 3 trips with a hoarder will clear a full jetcan. Your heart will grow warm with the site of 27000m3 of rich scordite waiting to be refined, sitting there in your hangar.
This will get you going. Now you need to do some learning skills.
ROUND THREE Instant Recall Level 1 Analytical Mind Level 1 Learning Level 1 Instant Recall Level 2 Analytical Mind Level 2 Learning Level 2 Instant Recall Level 3 Analytical Mind Level 3 Learning Level 3 Instant Recall Level 3 Analytical Mind Level 3 Learning Level 3 Instant Recall Level 4 Analytical Mind Level 4 Learning Level 4
This series will give you the best rate of learning. This set will raise your intelligence by 4 points, memory by 4 points and learning rate by 8%. The time for these skills is 4-5 days depending on you current character's attrubutes.
Now learn: Spatial Awareness to 4 (1.5 days) Iron Will to 4 (1.5 days)
The total skill time for this is about a week depending on your attributes!
Conclusion From here on in you can learn skills to get bigger and better ships which can power more mining lasers and eventually get a mining barge with strip miners. Don't forget to do missions to raise standings at the station on your choice. High standing reduces the amount of ore that the station owner takes off you each time you refine. Command and Security agents raise standings the fastest and give more fun missions. :)

Very good guide, Mik. Thank you, I assume that the neat secure yellow marked cans you see around belts are a bit more of an endevor?

Thanks Daestra,
Well, if you are going to mine in the same place a lot then it is worth getting secured cans and anchoring them in belts. There are a few quirks to doing that (like rules for anchoring and distance from other object limitations) which make for that being a subject for another day. I still dont mine that way myself even when corp mining. The loss from ore theft is too low for us to bother about it in higher sec systems and all those cans make for ugly space. I hate em. :)

Mining barges are made by the ORE corp, so they're universal to all races, as Thelmarr said.
Further to Gadfly's suggestions, I'd recommend getting the middle or largest mining barge (retriever and covetor I think), after your Osprey, as the osprey with a decent caldari cruiser level will outmine the starter mining barge (plus the Caldari cruiser level will serve you well for a caracal, which is the most efficient mission running ship in my opinion).
I don't recommend going for a Moa as Nightly suggests as it costs about the same as a medium mining barge and won't perform as well.
One last thing - if you're planning to mine solo, then fill your drone bays with combat drones for defence. If you're mining in a group with friends, then you may consider getting mining drones for that little extra boost to your yield/time ratio.
