Boosters. Chemical compounds that can affect your skills in good and bad ways. What are they, how are they made, and are they something you should "Just Say No" to?
Tuxford has put together a preview of Boosters in his latest blog, 'A Bit About Combat Boosters'. The blog is an overview of a design concept that still has a little bit to go.
Do you take the red pill or the blue pill?

Edited by: Malthros Zenobia on 23/06/2006 19:56:48 Awesome, this will go nicely with rigs.
Some of the penalties might not make sense though. How would thing like missile explosion velocity be affected by boosters?
Perhaps things like, better optimal/falloff but bad tracking, better tracking but worse rof?

does "All materials will be attainable in 0.0 COSMOS regions and empire space." mean they will be available in both, or that you will need to visit both to get all the materials?

I really hope it is the second option.
Having read the whole article now, I'm pretty sure it is

Edited by: Jim McGregor on 23/06/2006 20:17:12 Well, Combat Boosters sounds interesting, but like most everything coming in Kali, you need ingredients from several 0.0 regions to make it really good and also access to a "forthcoming new starbase structure" to make the stuff. It does sound like alot of this new content is content for 0.0 alliances only. Basicly the most powerful oldtimers will become even more powerful. Its pretty cool and I guess this creates some incentive for joining a 0.0 alliance to get your hands on the stuff.
I just hope this doesnt end up as a grind with 0.0001% chance of finding the stuff because thats very, very boring. First we need a recepie from a 0.0 cosmos mission, then try to find a gas cloud that moves around. Not sure how time consuming this would be, but... sounds like the effort better be worth it, or it wont be interesting.
Personally im not at all into playing eve vs the environment (really bores me), but at least this sounds like it can provide some reasons to do it for a while.
Edit: After reading HippoKing/Avon, i hope they are right about the materials being available in empire as well.

We want boosters to be a bonus rather than a required PvP component.
If something gives a bonus it'll be required. That's just how the min/maxers think. -- Lil Miner Newbie Skills Roadmap | Visual Building Guide (Both work in game too!) |

Are the recipies going to be limited or unlimited use?
Are we going to get new mini-professions that are used to collect the 0.0 COSMOS bits or will they use hacking and arch?

My main concern is how the boosters will interact with the UI..
I really dont want to do show info on my modules to see if there is a negative bonus. Hopefully the time left will not be implmented the same way as the criminal count down timer.
Dare I say it a system along the lines of the buff display system used in wow would be a ideal solution.

so rig +20% shield boost + booster +20% shield bost = Invulnerable raven?
you better pre-nerf the raven then!

I don't really like the idea of having to pop some pills to make my ship competetive. Especially with the added chance that it might screw me over entirely. It's just that it is so luck based. I am pretty sure that ECM proved that luck based game mechanics are a bad idea. All the same I suppose I will have to reserve final judgement until after they come out.

Drugs for the masses!
Will Serpentis play any part in the introduction/production? Will the "activators" be outlawed? Will there be pink elephants? New sig coming soonÖ Tuxford's good for EVE. |

Sounds cool.
Since these are going to be reacted in starbases I sincerely hope that you this time consider the variance in CPU and grid available in the different races towers and dont force us to use caldari towers for the high end stuff like with advanced materials...
Will boosters be contraband in empire ?

Whilst the idea of boosters is a good one, and I know its just a balancing issue, I can't help but feel limiting them to being in 8 COSMOS regions is a bad thing. You will simply end up with the largest, and stronget groups claiming the regions and farming them for personal gain.
The trouble is keeping the interest in the market, whilst making it somewhat available to all. The bastard child that was the tech 2 lottery, whilst being an abomination, was available to anyone and everyone who was interested. Having booster production limited to POS is obviously a way of minimising the creation and supply of them, but there is almost no entry points for a small operation, or individuals. Unless you are part of a large, established operation with a significant investment in terms of skills, money and time, I can't see there being anyway for the little guy to be involved in this in anyway, shape or form.
It's your turn to die. |

If that happens, it won't be because the devs let it happen. It would be because the players let it happen. |

I dislike the chance system. Judging from the discussion about the ecm system, many people dislike its very random nature - please dont repeat this mistake.

I just hope the devs are doing enough testing on these to ensure there wont be invisible setups etc and also concidering the reprocusions it may cause to alliances whose space these cosmos areas will be placed in.

i dunno guys i mean its gonna be tech 2 all over again.. i mean who's going to stop this from being the new PvP thing...? i mean i know you can try but 'just say no' means less of an advantage
The Matrix Online introduced combat boostersy in beta and afaik they are standard practice now. Even after they were taken off npc merchants.
so my question is ... Why arent I going to get hooked?. and will there be increasing consequences / decreasing bonuses if used constantly like in real life?
