Today a member of my corporation had one of his accounts hacked and stolen. Password changed the whole nine yards...the name of the character on the account is Sticky Cow.
We have also gotten word from other corporations that they have had members that have had the same thing happen to them. there have been petitions sent on the matter by the involved players, but this is a warning to all players....be careful and change your passwords if you can to try and deter anyone trying to hack your accounts.

If you are talking about Broke's issue then you are mistaken...this is a different character account.
Also the other thread I posted was for CEO's to know the name of the character account stolen with sign proof from his friends to verify that Sticky cow was a stolen account.
THIS thread is for all those in eve who don't read the corp/alliances part of the forums, because a lot of people don't read that part of the forum.

i dont get why whenever an account is hacked, ppl say to change passwords. If it was truly hacked and the person had not given out the pass previously (as in someone else that he had given it too just betrayed him) then obviously he wont need the password to get access..... ------------------------------------------------ NEWLY ADDED ON 1/19 (though applies to all posts before ;p)

it's always good to change your password if there is hacking going on...changing from your normal easy passwords to an aplha numeric combo pass with special characters reduces the chances of it happening.

You'd do better off avoiding any 3rd party programs like the plague, checking your PCs for keyloggers, making sure you aren't dumb enough to use your account password for other fansites and then changing your password

Do not let any software store your passwords for later use.
Never use the Account Name for anything else. And especially not as Avatarname.
Never use the same password twice.
Don't change passwords from the gaming or surfing machine. If possible, use a PDA or something else with a fresh install of OS and software if in doubt.
Never use 3rd-party-software like POS-fuel-calculators, Corp-managers, Char-Optimizers, ... unless you do not compile the stuff from scrap after thorroughly checking the codebase for goofs and/or malicious parts. --*=*=*--

Look, if the accoutn is stolen and he can prove its his, i.e cc details etc he can get it back, second off, CCP is pretty much unhackable, it's happend once and i doubt it was hacked, i imagine if ccp look at the ips logginto the account before it was *stolen* there will be multiple ones from him accoutn sharing. So stop making threads on this matter and petition it.

This is very common. When i was younger, i was interested in computer security and found that this way of getting access was one of the best.

everyone brings up and harps on password security when "account hacking" comes up, because the vast vast majority of times accounts are hacked in just about anything, its not really "hacking" but password insecurity in some form. (the person giving it out, it being stored somewhere that got into the wrong hands, it being figured out..)

indeed, I expect it would be... enlightening, to see a listing of what characters in the corp in question, or who've recently been afflicted with this, using similar sites or third party utilitys, and the status of spyware or other things on their systems.

Edited by: babyblue on 25/06/2006 08:32:29 Hey Shek, you weren't here during the big account lock out last year? CCP had to reset passwords for a whole group (thousands) and then the GM's had to deal with petitions to reset the passwords one by one. Took me a week to get back in game - not that I play that much.
There may be vulnerabilities despite all these experiences, in the Eve client or servers themselves. The larger Eve becomes, the larger a target it is for haX0rs and the only way to be 100% secure on the internet is to unplug your router ;).

I belive that was right after I returned actually, and coincidentally I never saw as much as the scent of trouble with any of those problems.
sounds to me like a new "strategy" if people trying to steal accounts figured out that they can track who logged in and find undue abberations... it is easy for them to "fix" it. fixing character transferas could be far harder.
or maybe I trust CCP too much.

my advice is: Dont give anyone your login info. Dont use your login info on anything that aint CCP's Change your Password every month.

How could it be? A website can't read off your password or username: only charname/corp/alliance.

The IGB hands out loads of info about you when you trust a site. You have no way to know what info a site calls from the server once you trusted it. You can't stop it, nothing, nada. As is written in the help channel motd: Those funny webgames. Don't. --*=*=*--

True. Or you can do like me: ALWAYS use a alpha-numeric combination for password

Keyloggers won't work on EVE accounts because once you type in your username for the first time then its there forever and you don't have to re-type it. Just have to pull it down from the drop down box. =============================================== Don't say to me over a forum what you wouldn't say to my face. |

guess it depends on how long the keylogger has been there Also, it gets you logging into the forums

Thats one of the most sutpid things I have read in a while. Why does anyone deserve to get hacked? (apart from maybe the hackers themselves).
But that depends on your definition of 'hacked', as was noted in another post most instances of 'hacking' are not due to any kind of direct assault on a computer system belonging to the user or the server. We do not even know at this point whether said user(s) have been 'hacked' or something else has happened, hence my use in this post and my original of ['hacked'] rather than [hacked].
Maybe I worded my post wrong though, what i meant to say is that if you use simple oft used passwords and/or lax in security then you're not really helping yourself. Its like leaving your house windows and doors unlocked when you go on holiday.

EVERYTHING can be hacked. All it takes is someone willing to do it. If eve wasn't hackable then every government in the world would be employing the developers to make thier security programs as safe. Also if you READ the original post instead of just seeing the highlights you would see that it WAS petitioned by my corp memeber...this is a warning to the rest of eve that it is happening and others are reporting it as well.
As for my corp member who had his account hacked, yes it was hacked, he got it back today. GM's did confirm it was hacked and not some friend playing jokes or someone he knew trying to ninja his account. It was someone who hacked...how we don't know.
Just be careful with your login information...all of us spend to much time and effort for our ivestments in this game to be stolen but someone.
So to the quoted party....do your homework before making uneducated post's
