Pretty much, as an agressor, is smack good or bad in a war? This applies to forums and in-game.

Sometimes I use eve-search to look at people's posts, it's hilarious to see them smacking the crap out of a certain corp then join it a year later.

Flames should get you banned, IMO. I'll never understand why people think flame wars are cool or fun in any way, they're childish and annoying, and the main problem is almost every thread in this forum gets derailed by the third post max.
OT, I think it doesn't help in anything... aside from making you look like a total retard. ^^

I think flames etc can drag the reputation of a corp or alliance down.

Flames don't help at all.
Constructive posting does.
Unfortunately many people see constructive posting in the negative as flaming.

If smack would really do something in this game Burn Eden would own half of eve's space. All they are is a bunch of good PVPers that gank a bit here and there without any impact on eve whatsoever though.
Now lets wait and see how long it takes for one of them to find this thread and take over.

It depends on what you call smack or a flame. If one person is lying all the time (Aneu) and people post to prove that the lier is wrong, is that a flame feast or putting the record straight.
Now if Kayo calls at an alliance in local "Panzies" for shooting their mouths off on the forums while hiding cloaked in a 192 AU safe spot and out numbering our fleet 3 to 1. I would say all the smack is justified.

Denegrating an enemy can help break their morale. How are they going to know they suck unless someone tells them? . You have to back it up with military force though.
This combination worked well when ATUK and friends swept through the north earlier this year. Large scale and sustained attacks got things rolling, but the cascade of alliance collapses that followed was more about hearts and minds than shock and awe. People just lost the will to fight as existing internal problems were exposed through external pressure.
Conversely if you smack badly and can't back it up, you just end up looking like idiots. BE is the obvious example here.
So it depends.

ppl cry alot about smack.. lots of fond of saying how childish it is.. but then most children (at least from where i'm from) have learnt at an early age the old saying
"Stick and stones my break your bones, but names will never hurt you"
so who is the child.. the person who calls you the name or the person that cares about being called it?
Words and sounds have been used for eons in battles and wars.. like it or not it has it's uses..

Edited by: Quillan Rage on 26/06/2006 16:56:58 IMHO, smack is generally retarded, as it more often than not blows up in the face of the person who smacks an alliance (easy way to get made primary during a campaign)
Whilst propoganda is a great tool in war when used correctly, a lot of people misconstrue what Propoganda is and just write paragraphs of lies, which invariable look like smack and make the individual look like a ****
There are of course those who know they are making stuff up, and their only reason is to get a reaction from the enemies, who invariably rise to the bait, which serves their purpose.
People will probably smack for this comment, as it is a generalisation but it does tend to be the younger eve players who smack on forums, and considering that the age of the average EVE player is higher than most other MMORGS, I would say there is probably less smacktalkers on EVE than other games.

Alliance propaganda = Concealed smack talk .
Every alliance/corp likes to boost its rep and slag their enemies which will automaticly get them flames and smack only way around it is that both sides stfu but thats not gonna happen coz its just human nature to brag and defend. "What ever that doesn't Kill me just makes me stronger"

Smack is a necessary evil. As much as people claim to hate it or be against it, they get on this forum to read it everyday. It is part of warfare and is a weapon that, if used correctly, can be devastating to the enemy.

Edited by: cryptic edge on 26/06/2006 21:24:13 Smack adds nothing to the battle, helps noone, and only tears potential relationships more. Respect can be gained by good battles between what would seem to be sworn enemies, as long as there is no smack from both sides. I used to be in an alliance that was destroyed by Contraband INC because a member of the alliance smacktalked in local. It causes the bored to become blood thirsty and remove the fledgling alliances that wish to build as it did to us back then. This is also why I hold a strict no smack policy. We may disagree, but keep it professional.

I dont really think it adds anything to either side of a battle but immaturity. Smacking is just lame in general, and usually results in the smacker eating their words by the smackee.
I have learned many lessons in humility the hard way, so maybe thats why I prefer my guns to do the smacking for me.
Some can say that adds to the psychological warfare element of a battle, but that only works against weak minded fools. -----------
My posts are my own thoughts and I am not speaking on behalf of my corp or any other affiliations. |

smack on the forums doesnt do much apart from get you publicity, maybe it will make some nubsacks want to join your alliance if u smack alot because it makes whichever alliance seem more active than the ones that dont advertise evert fight they win/take part in.
imo smack is bad and just ruins this forum

Smack is bad.
However to the people earlier suggesting the closure of this forum, It would be a great loss to the EVE playerbase.
Hidden in between all the smack and flames is some real content, the politics played out on these boards is often quite interesting

Well it depends on the nature of the smack, I suppose. Generally negative comments, kept in charactor, and made with a main make the thread enjoyable, even if its a hostile enviroment. Its a game remember, I can 'smack' someone on the forums today, and go for a friendly beer with them tonight, come back and 'smack' them in the morning
I think you generally run into problems with some of the real bad smackers. Ok we've all had a couple slip ups, I'll admit I've made some posts, that wish I hadn't. But ushally smack of this nature is made by alt's, who ultimately produce the senseless drivel expected of such childish evasion of responsibility.

I say gf when i lose in local and brag when i win.
I also point out the stupidity in peoples comments.
I also love the one when people start the smack then when you smack back your the bad guy.
Is smack bad? some yea some no there is friendly smack but some people cant take a joke.
The bad smack is the guy who will never fight you but completely dogs you out in local while hes in his station.
