GM Grimmi,
When reading the initial post I was very surprised and somewhat upset. I am the author of a 3rd party tool (see signature). The wording used implies that *all* 3rd party tools are illegal and not to be trusted, while in my experience the availability of (almost) all 3rd party tools adds a great value to the gaming experience. The, legit tools made by honest people with a heart for the community, are widely used by the community. Shoving them all under the same banner and call them illegal is, in my opinion, very bad.
However, in your post you define a 3rd party tool as what I call a mod or modification or a tool that most likely will advertise in gaining a (unfair) advantage over other players. These are indeed forbidden by the EULA.
Please, don't throw all 3rd party tools on the same calling name as illegal mods. All the authors of legit 3rd party tools invest a great deal of time and money (hosting costs anybody) and most of them are freely available for the community so they have a better gaming experience without the tools modifying or attaching to or reading out the official game client.

well if they download a program to try and double their isk that way they do deserve to get robbed of all their isk tbh.

Quote: Using a 3rd party program? Having trouble with your ISK being mysteriously transferred to someone? Well, then you have a keylogger on your system that needs to be removed. Please use Taskmanager to find the process and then find and delete the .exe file.taskmanager?!? delete the exe?!?
sorry ccp, BUT to advise someone with a compromised system to do anything but a reinstall of the operating system is just wrong.
1. a keylogger that is worth mentioning will NOT show up in taskmanager 2. even if "it" is showing up there and you manage to delete "the exe" how would you know there is nothing running besides that "exe". a program that does NOT show up in taskmanager.
if anyone of you is affected for gods sake pls reinstall your OS, and change EVERY SINGLE password, pin..... not only for eve but email, banking, ebay, amazon....... that was used on this pc. consider your CC number/validtil/securitycode combination compromised if you used it on this pc......

i'm with grimmi on this 1. if you get caught by such a thing, then it's your problem and you shouldn't have been trying to cheat. i will also warn people that your eve details are not the only details at risk.....anyone use online banking etc ???
as regards such programs, should you find anything please report it to us and let us find out if it's real or not. there are many ways to get us, you will find myself and other Devs on IRC, you can use the petition system and file it under exploit. there are many ways to contact us about stuff like this. ofcourse if you decide to try itand something happends, then basically it's tuff luck

The advice you're giving would be correct if the problem was a rootkit.
The problem here is a mediocre keylogger that doesn't even have stealth capabilities.

I have alot of '3rd party programs' on my PC.
Do any of them have anything to do with EVE? Well, quickfit does I guess.
Am I worried that some 3rd party program like VLC or whatever is going to get me banned from EVE? No.

Has CCP disassembled that "exe file"? Or have YOU? What about the Installer? Has it been analysed as well?
Will CCP assume liability for homebanking or credit card fraud that might follow? Or will YOU? Neither the bank nor the CC publisher will!
The problem is neither a "keylogger" or a "rootkit". It is that the system has been compromised and is NOT to be trusted anymore.

We have found out that this keylogger adds itself to the registry and automatically runs on startup with the name "svchost.exe" after you run it the first time. NOTE THAT THERE ARE ALSO A FEW SYSTEM PROCESSES IN WINDOWS CALLED SVCHOST.EXE
If you have installed this keylogger, we recommend getting professional help to remove it.

uhh, what?
from the sound of it there was a cheat utility advertised by someone, that apparently in one form or another, compromises account security.
what are YOU talking about?
personally assuming that this particular problem ONLY comes from a program put in place by a utility thats supposed to cheat... then they deserve it.
you can't be saying you think that someone possibly having insecurity of banking information, after installing a program they thought would allow them to cheat the game, is CCP's fault... are you?

I know exactly what you're going on about (I know IT security) but what you are saying simply isn't practical for a home user.
First of all, they're using Windows, a massively insecure operating system to begin with. If they cared about security enough to reformat upon the slightest security breach, they would have installed Linux instead.

Yeah so windows isnt used by many major multinational corporations due to its security risk . Yeah right.... A windows install with the correct policies setup and a active systems admin can remove a majority of the external security risks. Social engineering to compromise accts on the other hand (as in this case advertising free isk through a random program)... installing linux wouldnt save anything once they downloaded the program.

Of course. But home users don't have an active sysadmin to remove a majority of the security risks.
Windows, as it is set up and installed by 99% of computer manufacturers for home users, is a security deathtrap.
The only case in which this advice applies is if you're on a work machine administered by an active sysadmin. And if you're playing EVE at work you have bigger problems

Was it just "a mediocre keylogger that doesn't even have stealth capabilities" or wasn't it? Why did you have to tell everyone what the problem _exactly_ was even tho you did NOT know?!?
And adding itself to the registry, hiding behind the name svchost.exe(or does the svchost even actually start the dll containing the keylogger?!?)....... is just the newest info ccp got for us!
It is NOT the complete list of "features". Might as well be running a network sniffer for example, so passwords used on other computers in same subnet might be affected as well....... Or just alter the billboards around your friendly neighbourhood gates to show ****.
The point is atm we do NOT know what else might be included in the "features". And we will not know before it is too late. So the only solution is a windows reinstall.

Well the easiest solution is to just reinstall windows: a format isn't needed. As long as one resets the registry and all settings, and rewrites all system files, any keylogger is disabled.

"There can be multiple instances of Svchost.exe running at the same time. Each Svchost.exe session can contain a grouping of services, so that separate services can be run depending on how and where Svchost.exe is started. This allows for better control and debugging."

a fresh install of xp has about 6 sv_hosts right from the start
anyways for all those little scrotes out there.. Quote: Using a 3rd party program that is supposed to give you an advantage over others in EVE?
thought you had hax? haha you dont and now your pc is compromised
Quote: Having trouble with your ISK being mysteriously transferred to someone?
lol.. just lol
Quote: Well, then you have a keylogger on your system that needs to be removed. Please use Taskmanager to find the process and then find and delete the .exe file.
i wonder how many of the people that downloaded this are actually capable of locating the exe i have no idea what this is but if its been well made then (hopefully) it will be difficult to delete personally i hope they have to format to get rid of it
and the moral of the story is... strange programs that "give you and advantage over others" are usually cheats and if there is one good thing about eve, its (afaik) v hard to cheat at
i know i shouldnt laugh, but this has made my day

Well CCP can trace where all the transferred isk is going.
Are they going to ban those accounts receiving it? A word of caution on banning though, the key loggers might transfer isk to innocent people, hoping to cover their tracks and/or get innocent people banned.
If a large sum of isk appears in your wallets petition it if it's unexpected. Dont spend it or transfer it on.

Please note that the following is only to show you were to look.
START -> RUN -> REGEDIT <enter>
Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\
Services are generally not started from there and if you see the file launched there ... you got it.
Do not blindly delete anything that you THINK shouldn't be there. Pretty please.
