But I am curious. I went through my mails (say up to 6 months old) and i noticed how many pilots i knew and flew with went inactive. All from different corps (small/big, hisec/low/null, high/low SP players...etc.), some had RL issues (or just were too busy to play games) but most went inactive from 1 day to another never to be seen online again. So is it just me or did some of you notice something similar ? Is there a general cause that might get guys stop playing ? (a hisec bear might not be worried about the current state of nullsec)
To be on the safe side - in case you are bored / plan to take a break - can i have your stuff or at least ships ? Its normal ****. I went inactive 2 times and still came back. This hobby consumes much time, thats why it interferes with RL here and there. I for myself is very proud to tell people that I play Excel in space.

I know that feeling!
I have played since 03 so almost all the people i once played with stopped playing over the past decade, some are still knocking about, sometimes i see a name in local i have not spoken to in an age, problem is you never know if they are still the original owner!
I myself go through spits and spurts depending on how busy i am in RL, with 4 kids and a full time (high pressure) job sometimes the last thing i want to do is game, but then i might have a good week and play my arse for a few days.
The main problem i have is i am space well off, i have enough isk and assets to fund my account for the next few years in plex without lifting a finger so i have no huge urge to log in unless war is upon us or something similar! to be honest if not for the fact i have invested so much time into Xtreem for the past 11 year I would most likely have left by now!

What 'fact' do you mean ? Care to explain your statement ? I asked if others had a similar experience in the last months. I know the peek concurrent user levels have gone done and even some posts here confirmed a lot of alt-accounts are being not subbed anymore + i couldn't care less about that. I am however playing for a few years now and only seen guys going inactive en masse (never to be seen again) in the last months.
Thanks to all that cared to post their experience. My corp & alliance mates keep EvE fresh for me, but what made me start the thread was the amount out of corp contacts that have gone inactive. Truth. For years EVE was this cutthroat place of fun and creativity and danger.
Now we have cute little green safeties and crime watch rules and pop ups that keeps us from hurting our wee little selves. How ever did i survive in high sec flying faction/pirate ships without getting ganked for years prior to all this safety i don't know.... Oh wait, I do know, because I paid attention to the game i was playing.....

My point is, you think that yourself and five guys seeing "a lot" (you still haven't given us a number) of unsubs must indicate that EVE is on a decline. You want to create your own echo chamber in this thread.. that's fine, but your analysis seems to preclude any statistical information.

You should read TMC more. There was a recent 'data' saturated chart thrown up as to how eve is quite literally bleeding subs. |

Right.
I've seen lots of people come and go. EVE is a game, that's going to happen. I never once thought "my friends are leaving, EVE is dying". I thought "my friends moved on, I'm not ready to, I'll just make new friends and holler at my old ones on face book from time to time".

Maybe you can enlighten us and give us your specific take on the data. I hope you'll understand if we don't immediately swoon at your "correlation is causation" conclusions.
Maybe you meant that Mittani article about rookies in the threadnaught which read more like a Ripard Teg article. That article is a mixed bag, and you're better off discussing in the threadnaught. .. when everything else is gone .. |

I sadly don't have the numbers you seek, if i had them i wouldn't have started this thread. Since i don't have the numbers i asked others if they experienced a similar decline in active contacts as me. The initial statement was done in hope to have -1/-2 'eve is dying' posts and more of those kind of Altirius Saldiaro's. "This is nothing more than a rumor with no basis of fact. Hope that's enough of a confirmation for you guys. :)" Coolstorybro

Tech companies in Taiwan and Bangalore have record employee turnarounds. Both are exploding with tech companies and tech employees often jump to another job for a bump in pay. This sort of activity isn't enough to conclude, one way or another, if a company is dying. Larger companies often spend significant resources to train employees whom they lose to smaller companies. All these companies grow and shrink their operations frequently.
Some EVE players love the game. Some are still discovering it. Some are so overwhelmed by it that they're on their way out. Some have RL situations tugging at them. Some have way too much time on their hands. Some just play with one account. Some sub multiple accounts. There are a lot of factors and I think discussions of *statistical trends* are useful.
I don't see the concurrent user graph as a trend. I see spikes and dips. I also don't see your particular experience as a trend. I see very localized, individual experiences in this thread that contribute (in a very insignificant way) to an overall statistic. And the large scale statistic is still very murky in terms of whether EVE is just fine, or on the decline.
I think it's useful to have discussions of individual experiences, but it is disingenuous to frame these experiences as indicative of a larger trend. .. when everything else is gone .. |

There is nothing new left to do in the game, and the new stuff ccp is adding in the "expansions" is garbage, how much more useless deployable junk needs to be added before we get some actual content. The game might not have been better but it used to be fun, now it's just stale and boring, and there is nothing indicating it's going to change.

Plenty of tools that CCP could add to let us make our content (swap sov mechanics to those FW ones, PI where you could build real bases, research stations/production lines - that could be attacked from the orbit )
Back to the topic - how did your amount of active contacts change in the last (say 6) months ? "This is nothing more than a rumor with no basis of fact. Hope that's enough of a confirmation for you guys. :)" Coolstorybro

The biggest reason why people burn out and stop playing is a very simple one.
Cabin fever.
How does that happen in a MMO? Alts. At first, you add an innocent cyno alt... but that's just the first snowflake in an unstoppable avalanche. You add haulers, PI alts, market alts, booster alts and whatever else your heart may desire. Multiboxing carriers? No problem. Then you find yourself in a corner of space that you have carved out for yourself, your own empire. But along the way your existance in New Eden has become the goal rather than the means to an end. An endless stream of tasks to perform to ensure the upkeep of your little golden horde. Other pilots have become blips on d-scan, interacting with them in any meaningful has become a nuisance rather than a pleasure...
And then you ask yourself: "What's left to do in EvE?"
And the answer is nothing. You have done it all, congratulations!
And with a nostalgic sigh of a better time you let your accounts expire, disappearing into the dark corners of space from whence you once came in a frigate.
Gone, not even a small blip on somebody's d-scan... but the others, they keep marching on, relentlessly fueling their own conquests of the downwards spiral of madness that their game has become, their ventures nothing but a footnote in the book of space history... Do not remove a fly from your friend's forehead with a hatchet.
