I use my alts on one account to do several things.
Spy in certain systems, scan gates from far away before entering the system with precious cargo.
Check the market in other regions than my home region.
Post things on the forum I don't want asociated with ME...
Other useful things are when you have had more than one account for a while and find one of your characters are trained to where you want them and need to save money, you can transfer the character to the main account. Example, if you are a miner, you can dedicate one character to mining and one to refining. Simpler matter of relogging when you need to refine. Saves you a lot RL cash...

The use I have found is that if you have very poor stats for something (like charisma) and you want to do allot of corp skills. You could create an alt with high charisma and memory. It would make him train faster and in fact save your main guy some time. While he is training you can just play on your main.

Same works for a trading alt.

I would think if you were working on one race's skills on your main character (let's say Gallente), and you wanted to explore a different race (let's say Amarr), then instead of rerouting your Gallente guy you can make a completely second Amarr character to train at the same time. It gives you more flexibility to explore without taking as much time (ie establishing yourself well in one race before changing)

Does however mean you have to spend a month training all the learning skills again...

Roleplaying reasons.

Some of the uses:
1) Hauling alts. You can train up industrial skills in a few hours. Great to have hauling alts when your main is in another location.
2) Spin of the 1). Out of corp/alliance alt hauler. Great when you are in an empire war and want to move stuff around.
3) Trading alts. Have an alt in a trading hub to check prices, buy/sell
4) Expendable alt. Train enough to use for example a Caracal and use it with a group of other cheap alts. Might be good to have available to defend a certain system when your other char is somewhere else. Podding will be cheap

A chain of cynosaural field generation alts is incredibly useful if your corp deploys capital ships.
I also used to maintain alts to quickly check region prices across eve when I was in a smaller corp.

Being an alt my self...
I am abused by the corp mates of my main. They make me haul their ore during mining operations, check to see if a gate is camped . And doing their buying and selling of small objects on the other side of the galaxy, which I then get to move all the way over to them in my n00b ship.

Hello,
I am an ALT. Currently I've a massive headache as my head is stuffed with implants.
I'm spending a long time docked in a station, training for Carriers, while my darling main focuses on Battleship skills, and feeds me ISK for skillbooks.
You will see me in the future.
Fly safe!

My alt has a fetish for flying one room behind me in big missions and grabbing my loot while I continue to frag Guristas. Saves me a ton of time hauling and picking crap up and for some reason, when the mission's over, she always gives me all the loot and any bounties she accidentally picked up. What a generous alt I have.

Spies and target practice /*----------------------------------------------------------------------------------*/ My opinion in no way represents that of my corp or anyone I am associated with, and is probably entirely wrong. |

i think u have to differ between alt on same account or alt on second account
same account: - Trade account for buy/sell/check market/more Orders - system check alt in a Pod - hauling alt in case of empire wardec - Cyno Field Char ( takes <6d) Pro: - U still only Pay for 1 Account Contra: - U can only SkillTrain 1 Char per Account - cant use Cyno char for jumping urself (main Char) - u can only run 1 Account at a time - Trading between account only via Escow,Corp Hangar
other account: - Hauling alt for mining - Miner alt ( while ur other char is flying protection) - trading alt ( running cargo for long jumps) - Cyno Field Char Pro: - U can train ur alt while still training on ur main char - Can use Cyno Field to jump ur main char carrier - U can run both Chars on 1 PC doing different things Contra - U have to pay for 2 Accounts --------------------------------------------------------- a Challenge System for Eve |

Edited by: Whitethorn on 01/08/2006 18:34:26 You'll find most people don't spend a lot of time training anything but their main character on their primary account. That main character is who they are primarily known as in Eve so tends to get preferencial treatment in training. They may have a disposable scout alt or hauler on their primary account, or a character that has been trained up on another account and moved over (either a secondary account or bought with isk off someone else), or another type of character that didn't need much training.
Generally, its the secondary accounts that end up with multiple characters being trained. People don't mind fragmented training so much on a secondary account, so you tend to end up with various combinations - like a dedicated builder, a hauler training (or trained) for freighters, trade alts with advanced trading skills, lab alts for research, and so on.

Once your miner progresses to tech 2 strips, and have even tech 1 crystals trained, you're also automatically a perfect refiner (at least in empire stations with 50% base efficiency - which is most of em). You still pay station fees if u dont have standig but you will get 100% refine before the charge u fees.
