A new news item is up, the freighter changes scheduled to be deployed tomorrow have been delayed. The mechanics of the change work good, too good in fact. Testing over the weekend backed up some of the forum comments and the effects a fully-loaded freighter's destruction on a server node are too high to allow this change into the game in its current state.
There are no changes to the scheduled Extended Downtime slated for Wednesday.

Are the freighters currently in testing dropping multiple cans or only a single one?

Maybe the freighter should drop an IOU coupon redeemable in the Polaris system for the goodies?

And it is just this sort of attitude that delayed the deployment of this change. Sure, real funny to potentially drop a server node, impact the play of a couple hundred players, and increase the GMs' already large workload.

when this change goes live... will frieghters finally be able to eject and scoop? Or at least access hangers at a POS?
after all, if they finally "fixed" the containment field so they drop loot like everything else, frieghters should be able to scoop and jet... like every thing else.

There's a difference between stopping the field destroying everything when it shuts down, and moving stuff in and out of the field while it's still active. I would suggest the second is much more difficult to achieve without the support equipment of a station. ------- There is no magic Wand of Fixing, and it is not powered by forum whines. |

Would it be hard (speaking as someone without a fricking clue) to make them drop their own super-can, which was 1,000,000m3 in size? Would that fix the problem? (assuming that the problem is caused by sheer numbers of cans dropped)
Also, please no-one say this idea will be exploited by people self-destructing freighters in belts to get 1,000,000 m3 cans. Just don't even go there. Its too moronic to think about.

*laugh* yeah because nobody is going to be shooting at freighters causing them to pop and drop nodes, it's always those bad attitude punks causing all the trouble. If it weren't for them CCP wouldn't need to fix anything.

is it the ships that could pop out when a freighter got destroyed that mainly caused the problem? A charon with lvl 5 freighter would be able to carry 1962 shuttles, that goes boom and well a lot of ships suddenly appear out of nowhere . if it would be all cargo that fits nicely in to the jet cans it would only generate 36 cans. Quite a few but that shouldn't be too much of a problem i'd say. To me it doesn't make sense why a packaged ship would suddenly(could almost say magically) be assembled upon the freighter's(or any ship that can carry the ship unassembled) destruction, have ships allways be destroyed when not assembled and it would clear at least the problem of the ships. (Can't imagine a max. of 36 jet cans would be a big problem for eve to handle, I have seen the FFA on sisi .) - "I wish CONCORD would scream "No-one expects the Spanish Inquisition" when they turn up to blob you. yeah I also thought about this, instead of dropping tons of small cans, create one big can.
to not beeing able to exploid it, just let it fade away after 2-3hours as usual cans.

The problem is that all ships are automatically assembled and put in space when the ship carrying them was blown up, hence almost 2000 shuttles being spawned :P

Would probably depend on how the current loot-dropping code works, it might not have been coded in such a way that makes changing the type of can dropped an easy operation. You would also have to modify the code so that looted ships went into the super-can, rather than jettisoned directly into space.
Given that loot cans are going to be replaced with wrecks in kali anyway, I'm not sure it'd be worth them making massive changes to the existing mechanic at this stage, when they could wait a few months and just build it into the new mechanic from the start. ------- There is no magic Wand of Fixing, and it is not powered by forum whines. |

I would just like to say what an excellent job you have done communicating this change before it was tested ...and subsequently found not ready for TQ...

Change it so that it drops giant secures, and also change it so that all ships are assembled unless there is a can that they can fit into dissassembled.

That's actually a very elegant way to do it. Station containers are already much too large to put in the cargo bay of any ships, so nobody can swoop in and suck the entire loot in one go.
The station container would have to implode after some time, much like regular jet cans. Storyline, one can argue that station containers aren't meant to stand on their own, and without the structural support of the station, they'll break down quickly.
The station container would also need to be accessible in space. Most cans are lootable, but I don't know if they share the same access mechanics as audit log cans, or are their own code.
In effect, when a freighter blows up, you'd eject the pilot and replace the ship with a station can that has full access to everyone, but no access to access controls (IE: everyone can take things out of it, but nobody can "lock" it). If the pilot wants to protect any secure cans he had aboard, he needs to launch them into space and anchor them. So, I guess a small bit of code to allow the can owner to "jettison" might be needed, since pods don't have enough cargo space to transfer it that way. :)
*shrug* Sounds good on paper from way up here.

Originally by: News Of EVE Weekend testing of the cargo containment software has revealed a flaw with the system and the upgrade will not be deployed tomorrow. While the software worked as intended, the potential release of numerous cargo containers presented navigational hazards in simulations where freighters were destroyed. These hazards slowed or even stopped movement through systems and caused communications delays as Gal-Net became flooded with the sudden appearance of container transponder beacons. CONCORD agents were required to individually disable the transponder beacons, a time consuming and manpower intensive task.
Anonymous sources are stating this deployment is only temporarily halted, but were not able to give a future deployment date. Further testing is required to resolve communication issues with Gal-Net and remove any navigational hazards.

96 Million for a Raven, 10 Million for Launchers, 35 Million for Fittings, Bringing Jita to its knees with 10,000 Cargo Cans w/o it being an exploit: Priceless. For everything else .... Boobies.
On a more serious note, perhaps there is a way to code a special container that would exclusively belong to freighters alone, and will be 1 Million m/3. I donĘt know how it would work within EVE, and if it is even possible, considering that all cargo containers are 27,000 m/3 for a reason.
Edit: Doh.... HippoKing got there first with the idea.....

Edited by: Joerd Toastius on 03/07/2006 22:10:54 If you wanted a simple and elegant choice for "alternate can"... why not make them drop stuff in freight containers? Seems the obvious choice...
{edit} And it's already got special code of its own if memory serves, so adding extra properties to it and it alone shouldn't be too much of a stretch?

We have general freight containers now, why not code in certain restrictions on cargo manifests? RP it as new shipping regs designed to simplify cargo manifests if you wish.
Something along the lines of anything <10000m3 (packaged cruisers are 10Km3 IIRC) have to be packed into general freight containers, then drop those when the freighter pops? Or have a freighter's hold divided into 120,000m3 cargo bays, then dump each of them to a general freight in the event of catastrophic hull breach (read: empire gank)?
Even with a freighter full of 10000m3 ships, that's a max of 100 at a time, harder to crash a node with 100 cruisers than with 2000 shuttles.
Feel free to slap this down, I have NFI of the coding involved.
