Hello all,
IÆm looking for some advice. IÆve been playing for about two months now, learning the game, getting a handle on the way things work and it is time for me to make some choices. My character is Caldari but I have come to find that I enjoy combat at close ranges far more than standing off at 80km+. The ship IÆve enjoyed most to date is my Kestrel rocket boat for example.
However looking over the latter Caldari ships it is fairly clear to me that most of not all of them are designed to be ranged boats. So my question is what ships (individual or race) are best at getting in close and slugging it out?
Also am a fan of speed and agility (although this is not an absolute requirement) so IÆm wondering if perhaps the Minmatar would not be a good fit? I know that their ships are a little faster, on average, than other races are they also more maneuverable/lower sig radius and if so does it make any real difference in there performance? (I find the low speed and sluggish handling of the Ferox terrible frustrating.)
Any thoughts/advice would be appreciated!

Ulta-close range, gallente are kings. However, if you like fighting in falloff, and you like the speed/agility, go minmatar. I love my flying scrapyard

Stabber is a bit poor IMO. Just get a rupture, and demonstrate the love

I love my MWD fitted Cyclone. And Rifter. And ****can... er... Rupture ;)
Go Minmatar. Autocannons are an excellent weapon set. Long enough range to hit someone when blasters juuuuust can't reach you, and short enough to make faster dogfights a hoot. Just be careful; while minny ships are fun and often quick, they're also often terribly fragile.

Wow, thanks for the quick replies all.
Right now it is mostly PvE by necessity, but as my skills go up I will be moving into PvP.

Next question,
Are there Minmatar cruisers or battlecruisers capable or reliably doing lv3 missions and if so what skills should I be looking to train to make best use of them? I figure any switch is going to require a fair amount of "retraining" as my combat skills, so far, are largely in shields/missiles.
Thanks again!

Edited by: Nicocat on 05/07/2006 17:44:43 In my experience, close range is a ***** with PvE, since the enemy is typically not close range >.> Stupid rear admirals...
Edit reply: I hear a Cyclone is a wonderful mission runner, although my favorite will always be the Ferox. For the Cyclone, you need medium guns (worst thing there is Gunnery III) and a reliable shield tank (the Cyclone has a built-in shield boost amp, and is one of the rare Minny shield tankers). Since you're Caldari anyway, you should have shield skills already, as well as medium guns. Just train up some projectile turret skill and invest in Weapon Upgrades IV no matter what (T2 Gyrostabilizers are for the freakin' win)

Cyclone (Minnie Battlecruiser) has some missile hardpoints and a shield boost bonus, so basically you wouldn't have to retrain (although you'll still want to train for projectiles... and drones.. and cap skills.. and armor tank if you want to fly most other minnie ships.. and ewar and armor tank for an off-bonuses but decent pvp Cyclone setup..). With quite low sps it can take on lv3s as well. --- Knowledge won't help us understand |

I tried lvl 3 Tech Secrets with a autocannon Cyclone. Bad idea. Those stabbers managed to stay at range no matter what i did. Use artillery on the cyclone if you want to use it for missions.
But i must say... i did the same mission in a passive tanked Ferox when i had like 1 mill sp. Easiest mission in the world. With cyclone its much more of a challenge.

As mentioned, Gallente blasterboats are amazing fun in gangs. The Thron and Thorax are both really good and shine best in gangs, when all you have to worry about is killing the other person asap

I still say a Ferox with 3 shield power relays and 3 large shield extenders is an exploit =P

Machariel, nice bonuses and by far best looking ship in game.
And when not used in combat it's easy to setup as a giant frig. 6 nano's and a TII MWD will do the trick :)
