First thing i loved was that awesome looking universe. The first thing i hated and i still do is the community. Ingame Bio's are incredibly stupid and forum is full of wannabe's. However, the game itself is sweet. |

The fellow in Local paying 10M to two newbies who were willing to duel each other right outside the station (winner gets cash). Newbie fight club, he called it.
And then the first fight before I jumped in.. the winner seemed ecstatic in Local. He was so happy And then the loser and the winner write the exact same sentence.
He'd pulled out an alt to scam the fellow out of an easy 10M.

Oh, god... the hatemail. The hatemail that carebears send when you suicide gank their ships.
Something about receiving racist slurs and gay insults in my EVEmail box on a regular basis does it for me.
What is funny? Apparently this conduct is condoned by CCP, because those conducting this behavior continue to log in and play EVE.
Do I report it or petition it? Nah. It is not my job to be the PC police of the internet. They can search their own logs, I'm not doing their work for them.
But I welcome this special brand of open-mindedness and tolerance in an MMO - CCP's willingness to look the other way keeps me hard, keeps me coming back for more.
Sadly, encouraging people to read and understand the Code in TS, or perhaps even conducting a sing-a-long session - well, turns out that's a bridge too far - permabannable behavior.
Lucky for us, CCP is more forgiving when it comes to RL threats and getting called the N-word. A-OK in New Eden. |

Honestly, what got me hooked was the forums. I got laid off in 2008. I had lots of time on my hands, a decent severance package + unemployment. I'd never played any kind of MMO before. I tried a bunch. I would download a game, do some stuff, then find a forum to read about stuff and talk to people. EvE was the only game that had a community that didn't make me want to punch a kitten or throw a land mine at a bunny.
I wish I could remember the name of my very first character. Or the email address I used to sign up with. Would be a blast to go get that guy and bring him back, whoever he was. Oh well. Turrents |

Pine Marten wrote:It was missions for me. They were all new to me and it was generally fun. Now it feels like a job just 2 make isk. Not that much at that. Now 2 make isk in empire, you have 2 do incursions. That's decent isk, but those are even more boring that mission's. At least your missions change. We need to eliminate concord and just make all space 0.0. Missions pay 20x as much.
Since you enjoy grinding and don't like CONCORD, here... pick your poison:

I think it was the words ''The learning curve in this game is so brutal, it makes learning Mandarin, translated into Klingon seem like a piece of ****''
Plus it looked absolutely stunning. I came across a drone hive in a L4 the other day and was insanely impressed - the thing just looked so goddamn alien.

I loved the complexity as well as the simplicity. I set up a training plan where I wouldn't be able to fight in the ships I wanted as a newbie for a few months, but I jumped into a nullsec corp almost right away and still found a place.
The idea that my 'plan' wouldn't come into effect for six months was amazing to me. The fact that just by scouting and setting up tacticals for my corp (when I was about a month old) earned me hundreds of millions of ISK in thank you donations showed me a side of the community that blew me away, and I have been hooked ever since. |

Love is probably a bit strong, but the first entertaining thing I recall was being Concorded whilst a few of us duelled on station in rookie ships. By duelling I mean just taking random potshots and being splattered all over the undock. Docking to find a brand new ship made me really happy, but then it took a while to work out how to get in it. It's a fairly common question in Rookie chat even now, and still makes me snigger. Usually by the point people ask it they are really frustrated and either bellow in caps or grovel in shame over the question.
Saw a guy once screaming his ship had just given birth to an egg (was probably just a vet taking the mickey) but he had people wetting themselves laughing when he ranted on for ages about not being ready to be a parent.
Aura's "Silly pilot" routine was pretty funny too. DON'T BE RIDICULOUS! |
