Edited by: Yotai on 07/07/2006 00:26:59 I'm on my third day of the trial and I constantly see people recommending mining for newcomers to make ISK... However, in my experience, I find combat missions to be MUCH more profitable.
Currently, my mining ship is just a Bantam. Being on trial, I can't train for industrial ships or anything with a significantly larger cargo hold. Should I simply stick to combat missions, or is there another way for me to make mining more efficient?

Some players find mining to be more leisurely, others enjoy the action of combat.
Mining is the best low risk (provided you stay in 1.0-0.5 Concord protected space) money making opportunity around. Combat missions are a bit more risky, and offer a bit more of a reward. It's all a trade off, the trick is finding what works best for you.

^^^ Amen. If something pays 1mil ISK, but isn't fun... I'll go without the ISK for that activity.
Money might buy hookers... but it doesn't necessarily buy happiness.

So, is that a roundabout way of saying "No, buy the game and get an Industrial ship to make mining worth it"?

As far as I know, correct me if i'm wrong, but industrial ships made horrible miners. They mine very slow and only have enough high slots to fit 1 mining laser. They are mainly used to haul cargo. Mining barges are what more higher lvl miners use, other then that a destroyer with cpu boosters can fit 4 mining lasers and has a decent cargo hold.

Actually Nexus, the industrial is not used for the mining part but to haul large volumes of mined ore. I use a Battlecruiser to mine with (5 miner II's) and pull more ore than a Retriever with strip miner I's. The idea is to mine into a floating container which is later picked up by the indy and shipped to the local station. This is where the big ISK is. For instance 1 hour of mining Golden Omber with this method in my BC is worth 8-10mill ISK. Not bad considering.
Have a look at the beginner's mining guide I wrote at Linkage.
Hope this helps, Mik

Steps to making money mining. Get into a crusier an osprey since you happen to be caldari. Get mining to lvl 4 so you can use miner 2's. Get you caldari cruiser skill up so you get more per laser in your osprey. Get drones to 4 for starters and mining drones to 3-4 so that you get at least a nother lasers worth a cycle. Now if you can get into a 0.0 corp where you can mine crokite/biskot and you can start making around 10 mill an hour. If you are going to hauler yourself and plan on taking the races industrial to lvl 5 go caldari or mini because their t2 haulers and frieghters are better to gelente and you can put a shield tank on both of them and use the low slots cor stabs/expanders. This is all the advice i can offer.

"Mining for rookies"?
How much nocxium can be refined out of 100m3 of rookies? Or is it mostly trit and pyerite? Are they a potential source of zydrine?
/me contemplates self-refining...

Thanks for the link, Mik. Lots of good info there.
For the time being, I'll just stick to combat missions and training my Learning skills and whatnot. In my Bantam, I can make about 23k in one 10 minute mining session. Not bad, but not nearly as good as combat missions. I made over 300k in one I did earlier (level 1 contact) that was full of Guristas. It took me longer to sell all the loot than it did to kill them.
I'll give mining a shot later on once my trial us over or maybe once I can fly an Osprey.
