1. Chrono Trigger--best console RPG ever, and one of the best RPGs on any platform, in my opinion; story, gameplay...it has it all
2. Master of Magic (and, more recently, Age of Wonders 2)--deep strategy, fun tactical battles, and a great atmosphere
3. TIE Fighter--how can you not love blowing up X-Wings with a TIE Interceptor? :b
I can think of a ton of other games that I could put up there too, so really these are more "first among equals" than the unqualified best.

Okay, there's 5, but I can't leave out my first RTS and FPS. Argh, but what about Wing Commander, Lords of the Realm, MoO, so many others? Games by Koei on the Super Nintendo...

X-Tension and its predecessor/skeleton game, X-Beyond the Frontier (X-BTF) seemed much closer to Elite than Eve, especially with direct control-first person flight.
Lot of fun stuff in X-Tension that's 'Coming Soon' (tm) in Eve, like buildable stations, communications satelites, sentry guns. Just not that well known because the company, Egosoft, is based in I think, the Netherlands? And marketing and distribution to the US kinda got screwed up. Sequal's about to come out pretty soon I think

Loads of others along the way, but by far my best moments came playing quake 2 in the long hot summer of 98 through 2001.

(Really fun multiplayer action)
Starfleet Command II + Orion Pirates
(It had bugs, It ****ed me off from time to time but wow did I have a blast on the dynaverse anyway)
Neverwinter Nights
(I just love the fact that you can create your own video game adventure)
and of course EVE

Outpost 2 was, well the best RTS I've ever played. Period. Single player was atrocious but multiplayer was simply brilliant. How it relates to EVE? I don't know.
Subspace is a small free game that's like 3.2mb in size, and has been around for about 5 years. Still a lot of fun though.
Tanarus was a ton of fun until Sony made it P2P and ruined most of the community. And that ladies and gentlemen is why I hate Sony.

*One* Person mentioned Homeworld?
Bloody Philistines! That game was a work of art. EVE (at least visually) owes a nod to it. Atmosphere-wise, it rivalled some of the better RPG/Adventure games i've played for the degree in which it pulls you in.
Musical score just "fit" so well. I'd often just pause the game to listen to the music.
As ever..just my opinion.

1) Sid Meyer's Pirates! on the C64
2) Tie: Civilization II and Empire II: The Art of War
3) Adventure on the Atari 2600

Probably the only thing any of those have to due with EVE is that Pirates! had drunken pirates you could hire as crew, and EVE had Stavros.
