When the old Private Ryan in standing in front of Tom Hank's grave, with his extended family around him, asking if had led a good life; had led a life worthy of the sacrifice they made for him.... that scene always makes me tear up.

Agree with Paddlefoot, end of Saving Private Ryan is classic. Would also say Sleepers, not sure if it's sad or just depressing and sickening. Also, SLC Punk, when ****** Bob goes to the great beyond. And Gone with the Wind. I know, I know, I always thought it was some sappy crappy romance about spoiled rich people during the Civil War, until I watched it. Good movie.

Has a special sadness for me. It was my mothers favourite film and just before she was diagnosed with Cancer, she asked me if I could find the theme tune for her which I did almost immediately. 4 months later I arranged to have it played at her funeral because it was a tune that she really liked best

I found it an excellent movie (of course, I wish I'd known to fast forward through the entire first quarter or third of the movie, it's utter crap until they get to the first deer hunting scene, but the fact that I liked it anyway just speaks to the quality of the REST of it), but really sad.

the part where deniro goes back to nam to bring walken home is a very very powerful scene. walken won the oscar for that role.... the only oscar hes ever won. but yea, if you can get through the first hour or so, which is terribly boring, what an incredible flick

There are too many... Most of them it is a certain scene, like with Philadelphia, the scene where Tom Hanks is explaining to Denzel Washington what the opera is about that he is listning to... That is an awesome, emotional moment.
Crash is a great movie, very intense, but I dont know if it made me cry, I think it did.
I think my favorite though is probably "What Dreams May Come".
Somewhere in Time is the first movie (besides ET) that made me cry, iirc. _______________________________________________ I am the devil, and I'm here to do the devils work.

It is in my must-see list, but I've been saving it for when I have some company with me.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is also good. Same goes for House of Flying Daggers.

I don't get it, how is forrest gump a sad movie? Requiem for a dream is more of psychotic than sad. Freaked me out in a way that se7en did, not in a sad way. Here's a go, can' pick one of those 3:
Johnny got his gun (learn suicidal tendencies in 1hr) I can't believe I'm the first one mentioning this movie. Awakenings (mmm, one can call this too corny) Dancer in the dark (the bad habit of identifying with the hero is a one-way ticket to depression)
I am sad to point out that most of the films listed in this thread are of the last decade.
Ooooh, oooh, saw someone mention bladerunner. If you really get into the film, and really understand what's going on, it can be one of the saddest films ever.

I was watching Watership Down a couple of years back with my then girlfriend and began to start getting tearful BEFORE the end as I knew what was going to happen. I've never lived that one down. In fact, I feel sad thinking about the end of it.

Even though it's not a sad film as such I think the end of The Terminator is a little sad.
It's the part when the little boy takes the photo of Sarah Conner and it's the very same photo that Kyle Reece had in the future. The reason I think this part is sad is because Kyle Reece told Sarah Conner that he had a photo of her once and that she looked a little sad and he wondered what she was thinking of at that moment.
Well she was thinking of him. So The Terminator wasn't a Techno Sci-Fi Thriller, it was a weepie that should have starred Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. ___________________________________________________ Serenity Prime Is Recruiting |

Agree to Dead Poet Society
Also Life is Beautiful, I found that to be somewhat saddening.
I know there are plenty of other movies that can jerk tears but somehow I can never call to mind any movie I've seen based on an idea like "it was sad" or "it sucked", memory flaw I guess.
But there are movies that can make me cry, yes. ___________________________________________

City of God (I'm Venezuelan, this movie reflects the sadness and cruelty of my environment pretty well, even if the movie is Brazilian)

Have to Agree aswell, saddest film I have ever seen, there is nothing happy about the ending, at all.
Unlike most films where something is achieved (i.e Leon, kills the bad guys & Natalie Portman lives on) this doesnt happen in grave, nothings comes of there efforts.
Its very real and hard hitting.
Amazing film.
