I think theres a couple of reasons why the ladies of eve get decent treatment compared to most 'gamer girls'. Firstly, (at least in my experiance) they tend to be 20-30 with boyfriends/husbands/children which means that most of fifteen year old acne'd scary fanboi 'omg boobies'-types aren't interested.
Next its the more mature attitude to most things in eve handed down to them from corp/alliance leadership which also tends to be the older members of the eve community. Although many of them can be just as horn-doggish as us teenagery types, they will slap you down HARD for giving grief to the ladies.
Lastly its that in many occasions, the ladies are damn good at what they do.

I think the largest factor is the maturity level of the players. The community doesn't tolerate the attitudes that exist in other online games.
One factor that does strike me to be rather different from other online games is that Game Time Cards are difficult if not impossible to find in North America for purchase without the use of a credit card. GTC's are commonly available for other games in stores which minors can purchase without the use of a parent's credit card.
There is also a steep learning curve to the game and the initial gameplay itself can sometimes drive younger audiences away.

In many of the corps I've been in there have been a decent number of women players. They are treated no differently.
And I've been WTFBBQPWNED by one or two. I can think of a few names that strike me as top notch EVE players. But for the sake of their peace, I won't list them.
EVE in general tends to be a more adult game, and by proxy, women are more able to be honest about their sex in this game than say in counter-strike. None-the-less, I'm sure many women don't make it known because of bad experiances and stereotypes carried over from the rest of the industry.
And if you don't know what it's like to be a female gamer, join a CS server and get your mom or girlfriend to talk on the VOICE over. You will, in one instant become the most popular person you've ever seen. And probably hear some not very PG comments too. CS is an extreme example of a VERY immature player base. But you'll get the idea.

CS maybe really immature, but that's what makes it so funny sometimes. Like when a 9 year old says "GET CRUNK" over the microphone.

Reason I said that by the way is cause some games are famous for the way in wich girls get constant dating requests and foul adult language. I havent heard much about that happening in Eve without the lady herself being an active part of such behavior or language.
I treat both males and females with the same amount of respect (or lack thereof). I'm an equal opportunity hater. The same with foul language - I don't say anything to a female EVE player that I wouldn't say to a male EVE player.

I agree. Truth is, it doesn't matter one iota whether the person behind the character is male or female. What difference does it make? What're you hoping to do with them? It doesn't even really make any difference in terms of how the characters play - there're (thankfully) no interactions that're dependent on the sex of the character. Call me prudish if you like, but I'm just not interested in that sort of thing in games.
But there's a tendency in some players - even in EVE - to obsess about whether a player is a "real female" or not. And there are some who, if they think you are, immediately start with the creepy stuff... Maybe some like it. I know I don't. But that's really the point: I don't view EVE as anything even remotely sexual. I don't play in order to find dates. I don't want to know your A/S/L, and I don't want to tell you mine. I don't care. I don't send out details and I'm not going to use TeamSpeak so you can find out about 'the real me'. You're just the character I see on the screen for the purposes of the game, and that's it. And if you're a guy playing a girl, that's just fine by me - likewise if you're a girl playing a guy. I have no problem with that at all. After all, who's to say I'm not one or the other? I have chars of both sexes, so either way it's a given I'm playing the 'wrong' one at some point!
When I'm not playing, then I'm my real self. When I am playing, then I'm Vetur, or whichever char I'm playing, and that's all there is to it. |

There are Womens in Eve. And the Easter Bunny is real, and Santa Clause, and an honest politician, and .... I don't know why so many people claim to be something (most commonly women) over the internet. Hell, if i was going to claim too be something it wouldn't be a lame woman. I would claim to be the real power behind Microsoft, or the emperor of the moon.

You can be polite about it, but its the truth.

lol, the big assumption is that polite folks care.
I'm thinking of a certain case in a previous game where a good friend who was a self declared RL female turned out not to be (for those who know me, your first guess about who I'm talking about is wrong, as is your second and so on).
I never so much as raised an eyebrow. The person was still reliable and trustworthy (yes, trustworthy) in game. If he wants to claim to be female in game, I didn't, and don't care. In fact, the whole thing is boring.
Pictures are a bad idea all round and prove nothing (and truth be told, its not something that "needs" proving). The folks demanding pictured, even clothed ones, are the LAST folks that should be shown pictures. They need to grow up.
However.....
All self declared RL females in Eve should be assumed male until heard in Team Speak.
You can be polite about it, but its the truth.
Its also not an especially important issue, but its still the truth, and the topic of this thread. As long as folks are polite, everything is cool. If you don't have a mic, thats cool. I'll keep my doubts. Now when we jump through the gate, you can scramble that battleship???

Luckily I happen to know some of these mysterious "women playing EVE" also in RL and can confirm that yes, there are women playing female characters.
I also treat all female characters as female, even if I knew the player was male. After all, all I am seeing and dealing with is the character, not the player.

If there really are no women in Eve, a lot of guys are going to be very embarrassed after drooling over Eris for so long

Originally by: Paradice Edited by: Paradice on 09/07/2006 07:54:34 This is kind of an odd question, but I am curious. Are there any communities, groups, gatherings, corporations, forums, ect... of female gamers in Eve? I am really new to the game and enjoying it, the last MMO I played had a large female gamer community, set up forums, and even had real life get togethers and parties at the anual gamer convention. So I am wondering if there is anything similiar here?
I have heard rumor of an all female corp, but I haven't found any information on it.
It would be nice and all to be part of the female eve community as we seem to be outnumbered by quite a bit so far as I have seen
PS. How do you get your character's picture as your posting avatar?
YES! We DO exist! You are welcome to add me as a friend, and we can discuss the kind of guild/corp you are looking for, etc.
As for the Avatars... it's been like this since the last expansion over a month ago. CCP *please* fix SOON!

Ofcourse some guys claim to be women. There is by the way a better reason for having a female char. As my boyfriend says ... Gotta look at it , better make it look good. But us girls are here and we have been in online games for quite a while now.
