With my Radeon 9600 Pro, I'm able to get into the game. But whenever EVE tries to generate the thumbnail for a character (e.g. when getting that character's info), the graphics freeze up and eventually my monitor loses a signal. As in the VGA signal disappears and my monitor goes into power save mode. But EVE's music still plays.
And one my friend's here, also with a 9600 Pro, has the exact same problem. We're both running Windows XP with the Catalyst 3.7 (and no, I haven't been able to get it to work with other versions of Catalyst either).
Anyone else getting this problem? And have a solution? Please?
I sure would like to play with my shiny new Radeon 9600 Pro instead of my GeForce 3 Ti 200...

Edited by: Selisca Jarax on 17/10/2003 13:46:10 Edited by: Selisca Jarax on 17/10/2003 13:44:25 Had the exact same problem since i obtain my ATI card, a 9600 pro as well. So much so i reinstalled my old GF card, opend all the thumbnails then reinstalled my new card. But i still have to be careful when new items appear etc. Ive been told it could be a problem with RAM. You need some good stuff, ideally branded.. we shall have to see.. ive been too lazy to remove the one pice of non branded ram in my motherboard, and swap it with the branded i have. i suspect it wont help one bit however hehe. Edited by: Talak Relketh on 19/10/2003 23:25:57 Apparently it affects older cards too. I've got an 8500LE and I can't go for more than 10 minutes without freezing. Tried Catalyst 3.5, 3.7 and 3.8 as well.
EDIT: Turns out my problem was caused by a bad stick of RAM |

i have a radeon 9700 pro and my eve has always been so stable ppl dont belive me. this is however when im playing on the drivers that came with the cards CD. when i bought homewolrd 2 it required me to upgrade the drivers and so i did and hw2 worked smoothly
however, when i tried to log back on eve i got the exact same probs as u describes, iwe tried alot of stuff but only thing that seemed to work was reverting to the drivers on my cd,
so my suggestion would be to try to chnage drivers, perhaps to older/release version etc, might help

Hey all. I was running into this same exact problem with my sisters computer and I think I have found the solution. Again this just worked for me, no promises but give er a try. I slowed down the excelleration of the "direct 3D" and "Open GL."
How to do this:
Right click on the ATI logo in your task bar. then on "settings" then on "display settings"
It should open you up to a bunch of ATI Tabs.
"note that I'm not looking at the computer right so I'm going on memory."
The tab open to you should have a selecter for both Open GL and Direct 3D. Click on the "use custom" option and then on "customize."
Make sure they are both using 4X not automatic. Also bump the slider bar from best looking to performance. You will not get a noticable difference in the look of the game however it becomes MUCH more stable.
Good luck to all of you.. If you have more questions about it send me an eve mail and I will be glad to go over it with you.

Thanks for the ideas everyone. I've tried the performance v quality fix & unfortunately it hasn't worked for me. Interestingly enough the game crashed more with the quality turned down! Turning the quality right up seems to have stabilized it a little, it shouldn't work like that but it does! Maybe I've just got a duff card?
Here's waiting for ati to come out with some new drivers... _________________________

I got the same problems with my radeon 9700 pro. I've tried with alot of different drivers and changing the config. I even installed Win 2K instead of Win XP! But nothing works. It just keeps getting worse. I was wondering which motherboard you all have and if it's there the problem are! I have an ASUS P4S533.

Just here to show my solidarity (is that english ?)
I have a radeon 9800 pro and have the exact same problem.
If i go to the market in a station and get to the point where items have to be showed on the left side of the screen it hangs and my monitor enters standby mode and the VPU kicks in saying my card has entered software mode and i need to reboot to enter hardware mode.
My specs are:
Asus P4S8X Ati Saphire Radeo 9800pro p4 2.53ghz 512mb 333mhz

most of the time, we crash trying to load a picture from enemy at market etc. 1 solution i found is that dev could put a downloadable file with every non character picture that we could then put on our cache files or ask a friend that doesnt have any problem to load a bunch of picture from market and then send you is picture files

I have to mention that EVE isnt the only game I have had this problem with.
I had the same problem with c&c:Generals as well but it only occured twice and hasnt for quite some time now .
Im figuring (noob as i am) this is a bad bad hardware problem. Its more rather a fault of ATI then it is of EVE. We have to spam ATI's customer support with phonecalls and emails concerning this problem.
On the other hand if EVE's team know of this problem they might help in spamming ATI about this problem :)

I posted before and still do not have any problems at will with my 9600 pro and the 3.8 drivers... although has anyone still having problems tried reverting to the recommended 2.5 drivers?
2.5 drivers for Win 9x, 2000 & XP

could you post your specs pls ?
MB wich brand ati OS etc etc?
ill try the 2.5 but its pretty crap to go back to far outdated drivers wich have problems with other games just for EVE.

I have exactly the same problem. On clicking on an info icon (sometimes also when i press the esc button), my system freezes up and then the monitor says it doesn't get a signal from the video card. I deinstalled virtually every other program on my computer, went back to Catalyst 3.7, used Fullscreen and Windows mode, also Windows98 compatibility mode but nothing helped.
 Please help.
[My config: P4 3.06Ghz, Radeon 9800 Pro, Windows XP, Catalyst 3.8]

Seems to me like ASUS boards and ATI cards don't make a good pair. I started to have the following problem about a week after I bought my 9600 pro : while playing eve and even in normal computer use windows gave a message that the atiSOMETHING.dll has entered a loop and screen resolution dropped to 640 with no hardware acceleration. After trying all the tricks in the book on the 3.8 catalyst (disable fast write, downgrade, disable write combining and other bios settings I found on the net that helped other ppl). I have changed my mb now and everything is ok. Old mb ASUS A7M266-D with 2xMP1900+ (762MPX chipset) New one Leadtek K7NCR18D with MP1900+ (nforce2 ultra chipset) (both tested with latest and original chipset drivers)
I suspect it's either some special power requirements on ASUS boards (maybe some sensitivity related to PSU's), bad slots (found a lot of posts related to problems inserting cards in PCI, maybe AGP suffers from the same) or maybe just bad bioses.

I had a bunsh of probs when switching to a Radeon 9600 Pro last week.
The following did it for me:
1. Run EVE in Win 98/ME compatibility mode under XP (Rightclick shortcut -> properties -> compatibility)
2. Cleared the whole cache directory under EVE main directory (simply delete all files in the directory).
Now EVE runs perfectly stable. Try it.

I have read your posts Zondran, unfortunately after I switched my mb. But still it crashed even in normal windows operation.
TheHornet. Maybe it's just ASUS Athlon related ? It's just an opinion ...
