sounds like a driver related issue. Try reinstalling vid and audio drivers.

Lately I was having BSODs when playing Eve. Turned out it was a driver issue, I updated my video and sound drivers and things smoothed out.

I've had the same problem. I however did update all my drives to the best versions I could find (from the manufactuer's website). Even after a reformat and reinstalization of Windows it continues to frezee.
Does this sound more like a hardware problem then?

I was having the same problem, and disabling audio (you can do this from the in-game menu) instantly stopped it.
I like my sound though so I'm trying to find a better fix so i can still hear my missiles go bang

I haven't had any random reboots, but if that happens I'll keep that in mind.

make sure when you install your new drivers uninstall the old .. it can cause issues with a driver not being fully writen over by the new drivers and cause errors.

We have a system very close to the OP, and it is also shutting down while playing Eve.
It only started happening recently, and appeared random. Sometimes we could play as long as we wanted, other times it would lock up.
It turns out to be the CPU temperature that triggers the motherboard to shut down. Cleaning the computer helped a bit, but on hot days the room temperature seems to make it hard for those CPUs to stay warm. On cool days Eve plays fine.
We found it by running the software that monitors the various temperatures. Mostly our CPU runs at about 32degrees but Eve starts warming it up ... fast. How fast seems to be linked to room temperature.
Also, only Eve does this. Our other games seem to run fine so far.

Yea EVE is CPU intensive.. I would upgrade the heat sink on the CPU to counter this . Most after market hs are good and fairly cheap in price depending on how extravagent they get.

Did CCP change something on one of the downtimes?
I am having the same problem, and Nothing has changed on my end....
Eve played fine for as long as I wanted 2 weeks ago, now I can't play for 5 minutes without my comp shutting off.
I'll try video drivers, but I doubt that is going to fix it.

It's very, very rare for driver problems to cause that kind of behaviour. Actually switching off during play is almost always due to the machine's thermal protection system kicking in due to overheating.
It's easy enough to confirm this problem. Install SpeedFan and watch the temperatures while playing Eve in windowed mode. One of them should keep going up till the system fails.

Hi there, I have similar problems but I can't really say if it's same excactly.
Many mornings when I wake up and put my comp on, I launch eve. I start to chat with my corp mates and check out stuff when my comp restarts suddenly after 1-5mins of game. My screen first goes black and 5-10 secs after that it reboots. It's kind of curious since it never ever happens if it doesn't happen in first few minutes. Since I can still play after one or two reboots it really doesn't matter that much and if I don't turn my computer off at all it seems to work few days without any problems.
I suspect that its windows issue since my install is quite old and I changed my hardware without installing it again (for the first time my windows just found out the hardware when I was booting just to try it, I still use VIA mobo like my older was). I also think that my Graphics card might be the cause of the problem since I bought it used and I suspect that it's a 9500 non-pro which has been bios flashed to 9700 Pro. Other games still doesnt have any problems with my system so it is related to EVE, maybe it does some stuff what other games doesnt.
Here's my system specs:
AMD San Diego 3700+ ATi Radeon 9700 Pro 128mb (?) 2x512MB Kingston ValueRam Asus A8V DeLuxe mobo (VIA chipset) Integrated audio & network
My drivers are up do date and I have tried different versions of them, but I really havent tested all available versions since the game mostly works.

Anytime i have ever had an issue with crashes (very very few) it has been due to an auto update of something or router issue or driver but the game itself has never been the cause. Veni, vidi, vici |

Bombcrater - Thank you very much, I have been looking for a temperature monitoring program for a while now, Motherboard Monitor would not work with my comp. Speedfan is my new favorite toy. Thermal protection is definately the problem for me. New HS/Fan ordered.
Thank you for the help.

you guys keep in mind that (for those of us in the northern hem that is) things are generally warmer during this time of year. Pc's can (and do) react to temp changes and it's possible that an overclock'd (or even poorly set up pc) may be stable 11 months of the year, and then the air becomes real hot and computers dont cool nearly as well.
My pc has been crashing a LOT lately but I Throttled back the ram and cpu and everything is fine now.. This isnt going to be the case for everyone but for some people it will be.

ok, hold on, too weird. SAME thing has been happening to me. I have been playing eve for months and months just fine almost 24/7. Now, I launch Eve and watch my CPU temp go from about 36-38C to 46-48C then the whole thing shuts off. Black screen. No nothing, like someone pulled a plug. Same CPU same heat sink that has been working fine. I have latest drivers, open case air conditioning blowing on it. Did CCP do somthing? Also, works fine for hours on all other apps. Can surf internet for hours hours hours. Nothing. Only Eve. Hmmm. HELP! I haven't flown a ship in a week. I can only stay on long enough to change a skill training then my system shuts off.

First thing would be, as others have suggested, to be sure drivers are up to date. One note on that is in one of the other threads someone indicated that the latest nVidia drivers may cause a problem and recommended the next version down from that.
If you are sure that it isn't the drivers, be sure that there isn't dust build up inside that's clogging a fan. Especially the video card fan.
If it isn't these, then it may be possible that the computer is over heating, which will cause it to shut off.
I had an over heat problem on mine a couple weeks ago. Has been hot and humid here (temp and humidity both over 90). I have temperature sensors inside, one just below the video card where heat is likely to collect. When I played a game that used the video card a lot, the temperature increased fast to where the alarm went off for the video card sensor. Wasn't just with EVE.
My solution was to put a 12" table top fan in front of the computer turned on low. This blows more cooler air into the computer case than the two front fans pull in on their own. Haven't had a heating problem with it since.
Not saying this will take care of your problem, as it could be something else entirely. But just something to keep in mind. As a couple others pointed out, summer heat may cause the computer to over heat. My computer is a little over a year old. I used quality parts and am not over-clocking anything (everything is at the stock speed).
Over heating could be the CPU, video card, north/south bridge chips, memory chips. Pretty much anywhere inside the computer case. Just one other thing to check out.
Hope this helps. If not, at least it may eliminate one possibility. Good luck...

Just thought i'd put this out there. $ times at work in the last week we have had PC's shutting down for no reason. Servers and workstations. It turned out that the heat we have been experiencing has caused the heatsink compound between the cpu and the heatsink to dry out, also 1 Vid card had the same prob. We re-did the compound and voila, no more random or predictable shutdowns or glitches. Hope this helps. Veni, vidi, vici |

Edited by: Tan Boggart on 31/07/2006 23:49:48 EDIT : spelling
Just over a week ago I started getting black screens of death. My video would cut out, but the computer wouldn't restart. I assumed this was the video card overheating. My corp mate had the same problems and it fried his video card. Everyone in-game that has had the 'recent' problems uses an ATI card. Most of the problems are coming with x700 and x800 series. I cleaned out my computer and updated drivers which seemed to help a little. A day or two later I got a black screen and when I tried to shut down and restart, I found out my video card was fried as I get no video now from the get go.
I have run EVE nearly nonstop for 8 months with my current hardware setup without changing a thing. I heard CCP has implemented some server side changes that has caused this and it has likley cost me my video card as well as my ability to play in the near future.
Is CCP aware of this ? I am posting form a remote computer and am unable to log in to sumbit a report (nor do I feel like waiting for a response).

I can only get as far as 10 secs play before i get returned to the desk top. I have reinstalled the client, checked the memory, reinstalled windows xp and I have the latest video drivers. It cannot be the 8M link as the game runs poorly on a laptop [ok for trading but not flying] but the fault is not replicated on the laptop. on board video NVIDIA GeForce 6100 Any ideas ? Day of deafeat works ok as does CIv iv

I actualy have found what to be the problem is mine is a possible device driver or IRQ conflict with my audio card. I saw mentioned earlier that someone shut off thier audio and everything worked fine. since my last post all I have done is shut off my audio in the main panel of eve and has never crashed since. hope this helps

ccp shouldnt reply to these.
Eve shouldnt crash a pc. If you get a bluescreen then that could be eve related BUT that gives you something you can actually look into.
If your pc just "restarts" then it's probably heat related.
If it just "Shuts Down" (the power supply might keep running) then it's possible that the power supply isnt up to the task.
Bad drivers can do all sorts of crazy stuff BUT should result in a blue screen or at least error messages.
I had a big discussion with someone a few days ago who knew for a fact that it wasnt his hardware. After about 2 days of running test/diags and stuff then we were able to figgure out it was his hardware ;).
What I would do to "test" the problem. 1) Download some other game (good not crap) demo's and see if they screw up like mad (make sure they are directx games)
2) Open up the pc case and have a desk fan blowing into it :) (If all is well then the problem is heat)
3) Run programs like Memtest86 to check ram, or Prime95 to check cpu/ram. If your pc crashes while running something like Prime95 then you know it's a hardware/heat issue.
4) Try underclocking (Not voltage, but FSB) the computer. If you dont know what your doing then it's probably best to not try it but I doubt any of you having these problems are using Dells/Other Large OEM pc's.

I have tried pretty much everything except changing my videocard and motherboard. Is it possible that my Radeon X800 GTO is overheating due to the EVE client? I have played Prey, a much more GPU intensive game, without any problems. No problems with Rome: Total War, HL2 Episode One or GuildWars either.
Help!
