I like this idea but maybe it could go further to save space.
For example, have the member list show between the active list and the stacked tabs below. Hope this makes sense? |

+1 on the condition that the list of channels is somehow toggle-able or collapsible. There's little point in changing this if I still have to enlarge my chat window to show everything.

Also requesting this be:
- Optional - I use multiple chat windows. One of them doesn't have a lot of channels, so in that circumstance, it would be overkill. I want both at once.
- Collapsible - Like the hangar windows. It would be great to get that space back whenever you're not switching channels.
- Sortable - God ******* dammit CCP, stop rearranging my chat channels. I understand sorting them alphabetically on log in is easy, but it's annoying as hell to have to change it back every time I start up my client.
Otherwise, +1. This is a fantastic idea. |

I would suggest allowing multiple rows of horizontal tabs in a window, rather than putting them on the side.
More channels, less filling

Here's a summary of the additional options suggested in thread:
1) The width of the channeltabs can be adjusted making it able to show either more or less of the channelname;
2) The column with the channeltabs can be hidden/toggled/<.insert proper term here.>;
3) The channeltabs can be sorted by preference
