The latest game reviewers place Eve Online 8th well behind leader World Of Warcraft and I am not surprised.
On Games Radar, Eve was described as a "spreadsheet in space", but while it compliments much of what is happening in Eve, I see the future is very much under threat, and CCP cannot be happy be rated in 8th place.
I see lots of new emerging games threatening Eve, with more stupendous graphics and gameplay to boot. As mentioned World Of Warcraft has a new expansion with better models across the board.
The makers of ELITE, are creating a 2015 version called Elite Dangerous which is definitely going to rival Eve.
All other new games have superior graphics to games before, and run at 2540 x 1440. Most will be 3D ready.
It appears to me CCP is standing still, hoping the loyalty of players will keep them playing Eve. They can forget that, especially when they are charging -ú15 a month which is among the highest subscription fees of any game.
I have heard that CCP DOES HAVE THE IMPROVED GRAPHICS READY, but because of their slow servers, they cannot go public with it as it will affect the gameplay too much.
They need to invest in better servers and bite the bullet. Introduce those new improved models as soon as possible.
They also need an overhaul of the explosions. In World Of Tanks, each tank has a few unique explosions when it is destroyed. I hate seeing a huge Battleship instantly disappearing replaced by a small explosion graphic. It should be seen to explode properly not the poor way it happens now.
I hope they see some of the sense I've tried to make here. I like that you can communicate with CCP; they DO listen to their supporters, unlike the larger franchises, and I like them being an independent Icelandic/Scandinavian company against mainly American opposition, so I will continue to back them for as long as I can.
I just hope they act soon before the subs numbers decline irreparably. |

Graphical prettiness really isn't the big deal here; the quality of the game has more to do with the actual gameplay than anything else. Shiny graphics are nice, but long-term retention of players is always a question of gameplay. Admittedly, development of art and gameplay are orthogonal concepts, and focus on the one shouldn't impact focus on the other, but of the two, the gameplay is always the bigger deal.
Regardless, though, art and rendering are always going to be client-side issues, not server-side. If the art was available to be rolled out, any delays would have less to do with their servers, and more to do with client-side performance... aka, how well it will actually run on your machine. |

I heard Blizzard (makers of Warcraft) will have a scaleable version to suit the quality of your computer hardware so don't see the problem there.
Remember, computers and graphics cards have also massively improved since when Eve was created so CCP cannot be happy with graphics from yesteryear.
Though I do agree with you it is not only the game graphics that make a good game - Eve has the right balance, it ain't perfect but it keeps most of us hooked. "Shiny" new graphics can only make us enjoy the experience more for our -ú15 a month's-worth. |

I have accounts in 5 spaceship MMO games besides EVE and new models and explosions in EVE won't make me enjoy its huge time sinks instead of quick and less costly action in other games.
P.S. For CCP it will take years to implement new functionality so you better prepare to see empty game. |

Clearly you don't know how servers work. Graphics are controlled client side, servers are there to process all the commands/inputs/and generate results, when those results are generate, they send a command to the client to tell the client what to draw.
A new physics engine on the other hand, well I can see where that would affect the server.... How ever a new graphic's engine.... not so much.

Well significant numbers of EVE players will be Instabanned within the first hour on other games, so there will always be a core playerbase here we can play with. And they do add flavour.
Super hires Graphics are nice, but absolutely not the primary reason many would play the game or demand, after all when playing chess, does one focus on the fine sculpture of the pieces or the gameplay?
CCP need to expand their efforts to encourage all players to participate more fully, PVE , PVP and all who fit into the various levels of activity in between.
Then It would take a real challenge to overthrow it. There is one EvE. Many people. Many lifestyles. WE are EvE |

And this is the point. EvE not only allows you to be a complete and utter **** the game devs positively endorse such behavior. This is what's so special about EvE. The community love the free form of the game not the GFX and the devs love it whaen players do things like HULKAGGEDDON or BURN JITA. They especially liked it during the early Incursion build up when a player started a rumour of an incursion fleet with the Sansha himself actually there in low sec which proved to be a trap when a null sec entity dropped a massive fleet on the incursion fleet and pretty much destroyed the servers.
EvE is about what happens in the game. Space politics, backstabbing and general skullthuggery. Essentially, be a **** in the game. It's fun. |

Suppose it would be rude of me not to respond to such a lengthy reply.
On your final remarks, I do not have to prove anything, I am stating my opinion.
But I am seeing that other games are coming out with greater and more powerful graphics, as I said, higher res models and full 3D support.
When I play Eve I want to marvel at the craft, at the wonder of space how it could look in a REAL galactical environment. It is almost there, I believe, just needs a tad more to push it back up to among the best looking games on the market.
Of course, looks are not everything but they do add rather than the converse to the experience.
And if CCP did not consider they require better models then WHY DID THEY DESIGN THEM!!?? Because they have been made, it is just the client or whatever that needs upgrading.
It's all well and good to say, "We like Eve the way it is now, please don't change a thing!" You can't stand still and expect people to stay, or be charged -ú15 a month!!
CCP are not standing still, I would say, but they may need to get the priorities in order.
At least changing the explosions for ships as they have in World Of Tanks would be a small graphical upgrade. As for the problem with 100+ battles going on with all that animation, that would be down to the quality of the user's hardware settings, so long as Eve supplied the content, which at the moment they don't (they only give a 'token' explosion which looks a bit poor)!

This last quote is the view of many. Why should we not have BOTH! Great gameplay AND greater graphics!? There should be no conflict between the two.
Eve was ahead of it's time when it came out - now graphically is it starting to lag behind (3D support for example). Whether we face up to this sooner rather than later is a matter of course. |

So long as CCP insists on cash shopping on top of a sub based game. Most likely.
The big one has already been stated. Flashy graphics catches people eye and gets more people to try it.
Now before you go with the whole "we don't want those kind of people", "those kind of people" that EVE doesn't need or want are the same kind that will try it but won't stick around. The steep learning curve, the harshness, the other players, etc. They are what determines if the player is what EVE needs/wants. Even if the retention is 10%, if in one month 100 new players try EVE, then only 10 players stay. If 1000 new players try EVE, then 100 players will stay.
I'd say have the game like a bug zapper. The prettier the light, the more bugs will show up but only those who are right for the game can make it past the electrified screen. |

/snipped to save space/
you have a lot of I wants now don't you? Clearly the community wants and your wants are a tad.... Separated.
First lets start with the top. "I wants" will not get you anything. I want to beable to run more then 10 clients at once without everything lagging to hell. But, sadly that I want isn't going to make CCP code the game to be more friendly for my computer.
You should look into something called aesthetic vs graphics. You don't need WTF graphics to make things aesthetic pleasing and immersive. Clearly you have your definitions mixed up.
Why did they design better models? Proof of concept that they can make bigger and more bad ass art, the problem they are most likely having is how the client is design. Putting a bad ass model with trefecta polygons into a game that can only support basic block polygons can cause results of the models being displayed just as before, or causing the entire client's graphical engine to crash.
as for being charged 15 euros amonth, that isn't bad, seeing that the activation fee is like only 5, and the expansion packs are all free.
Much better then some unname games *WoW cough* where they force you to pay 60 american dollars for the base game, 12 to 14 dollar monthly fee, and 60 american dollars for each expansion pack.
As a programmer myself, I will end with this food note. Programming isn't easy, attempting to change the engine is like ripping out the center of a jigsaw puzzle, getting a new and totally different jigsaw puzzle, and hoping the pieces of new said puzzle will fit in the center of the old jigsaw puzzle :) |
