Does anyone else feel that mining as it stands is probably the most boring part of the entire EVE experience? When I run missions, there's always at least a remote chance that something cool will drop, or a reward will be particularly good, etc. Same goes for belt ratting - sure, it can be a bit monotonous, but you never know what will drop, or what will spawn - nothing like seeing a named ship pop up on your overview to add some excitement, most of the time. Hell, even with trading there's some depth and various opportunities involved for those who like that kind of thing.
But mining? The most exciting part of it is getting a better ship to mine with. Otherwise you sit there for hours, offloading your ore into a can to be hauled. This goes double in 0.0, where the best belts to mine in are (in my experience anyway) in the same system you'll be hauling to anyway. There's really no exploration needed, no real risk aside from a PVP attack, nada.
I can't help but feel CCP has done this backwards - that automated mining should have been introduced for standard asteroids in 0.0 (maybe even lowsec?), with an emphasis on players personally mining T2 components rather than the moon-mining that currently goes on. I guess the logic was that they wanted to make T2-related production something that only goes on if you have an established and serious presence in 0.0, which I could understand.
What it comes down to is, mining is profitable but boring, takes long, and could really use a new facet to it. Any thoughts?

Personally, I like mining how it is. There's plenty of stuff to do in Eve when you want excitement, be it missions, ratting, or PVP (my personal favourite). But mining is a nice, calming way to spend an hour or two. You can chat with friends, goof around, read the forums, and still make some isk.

The only way I could find to truly enjoy mining is to run 2 accounts. Im constantly shifting back and forth keeping the miner going and hauling loads to the station. Acctually keeps me busy.

I find it totally ridiculous RP wise that no one came up with the idea of placing a pinball game in the computers of the ships that could be played while mining or autopiloting or whatever.

mining was made so boring cuz it was not intended to be a profession!
and yet all carebears think that without them we pvpers wouldnt have ships to fly...
I say without carebears it would be WAY WAY more interesting to fight a war.
because it would simply mean that losses would hurt more not because it is expensive but because your own or friendly corps simply have no oppotunity to get every module or ship!

Edited by: Galk on 18/07/2006 20:14:58 Well i think they should keep the basic mining as it is.
Basicaly because there's people playing this game on all different levels with such variation on styles of play.
Having said that that.....
For sure, advance mining.... (very rough ideas)
Capital class ship.. built in refinary... blahh... a new set of roid fields...... (moving... as in the roids are in a state of travel)
You have this cap ship... it carries mining pods..... these pods are piloted by other players that are able to 'catch' these traveling roids (tractor beams or something).... they take the roid back to the ship... where the pilot has to refine the roid..... this is where the pilot comes in... basicaly he has to keep the refining process in check... within 'parameters' so to say..... the better he does this... the better the refine.....
Advance mining....
I would love something like this..... but i equaly wouldn't want to see what we have now done away with.... because i don't just think of myself... there's lots of others that play the game as i said.

As a mine-a-holic, I somehow find great satisfaction in popping asteroids. Call me wierd, call me strange, but call me a miner. I also find it relaxing after a day or two of doing missions or whatever...and usually am doing other things while mining like:
Visiting our corp's forum and writing messages; Updating our corp's website with news and info; Reading and/or replying to the official Eve forums (although I'm not mining now!); Checking the local market in-game on things I may wish to buy or sell; Checking Eve-Central for galaxy-wide prices on things I may wish to buy or sell; Checking my skill-planner; Replying to in-game mail from my corp members; Writing in-game corp mail to my corp members about something; Chatting in the HELP, SHIPS, or BLUEPRINT channels; Chatting in corp chat; Chatting in Local; Talking on Teamspeak; and the list goes on and on...

I can see enjoying mining as a relaxing 'don't pay much attention' activity. For me, I can manage that with belt ratting or mission-running though (Non-L4).
For me, I just see production as such a major part of the game world that I can't help but think of ways to make the gathering part more exciting. Say.. things to mine that are not only rare, but have no static spawn location. Not only giving people a reason to constantly be exploring and scanning different systems, but bring back some of the use for non-barge mining. Finding a single useful (and very profitable) mining resource on scanner, zoning over to it in a battlecruiser, wiping out the spawns, mining the resource, etc. I remember awhile back hearing about plans to introduce things like comets to mining - where you'd need a very fast ship to catch up to the comet and mine a very rare material from it.
Actually, I think that's what I'm really after. If someone really wants to bring out their hulk and mine for a couple hours, sure, why not. I'd just like there to be a deadlier, riskier, but still high-paying facet to mining. Maybe in Kali.

Yeah I've heard rumors of things like that in Kali, like the system-wide asteroid belts. That might be interesting. And exploration that might lead to different temporary type belts...mmm

any task that is macroed is not(only) a proof that some players are cheater, it's a proof it needs a FAST change in design. if the computer can do better than me, why freaking bother ! -

I love mining. I don't know what's so boring about it:
1) Jump to 0.0 system. 2) Kill some badass rats. 3) Go back to empire. 4) Buy minerals.
See? Mining for minerals is easy and fun!

Nahhhh
It's far easier to run worlds collide... 30 million...
Then buy 2500 shuttles and refine for 6.2 million trit
Gives you 8 million pocket change... and you have just mined 6 million trit in 40 minutes..

Yes, but you also just paid 22.5 mil for 6.2 million trit, instead of 6.2 mil for 6.2 million trit. =P

Having the option to manually shoot at rogue asteroids moving in on the ship to avoid ship damage or homing in on the payload with the miningdrone for bonus yields would be nice diversions.

Mining is nowhere as boring as shooting a tower with a dread. It could stand with a little excitement, but I often mine because I am looking for some activity that is generally calm and requires little interaction.
