*Starts training Carrier 1, goes away for three months*
Sooo.... because a few will use this to "play" the game in a way that is unpopular, the rest of us have to suffer? How much good do you think that Carrier 5 (vs. Carrier 1 or 2)will do the player who hasn't used his carrier at all in that time?
Yes. And who says that the char would start with the next skill level, if the account wasn't active ? If CCP wants to, they can just calculate that e.g. lvl. 3,4 and 5 would have been solely obtained, while your account was inactive and so these levels don't count. They'd just do it at your first login after the break. Wouldn't be a problem to implement. -------------------------- Post with your main !!!111 |

I hate to say this to someone on the front line against civilisation's main enemy, but haven't you got more things to worry about than progress in a game, when you live in a war zone?

Actually i doseem to remeber the devs on more than one occsionoutlining why they did not want it to happen, the split skillon the drawing board is a compromise.
So the fact that its on the drawing board proves they do listen ========= "I am not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why can`t we just take the safety labels off everything and let the problem fix its self |

A two-skill queue would solve so many headaches and not allow any of the undesirable stuff that a long queue would. Mainly, I would love being able to knock off those annoying 4-7 hour skills while I sleep.

i've been around for a little over 8 months and I like the way the skill work... I think it's normal to have to look over your character a little bit and decide what you train....
if it becomes easy to "queue" the skills, people will start training following some precise built and the creativity will drop... newbie will join and "set the 2-3 initial training queue..."

What I usually do is train different skills, when I am online I continue the ones with only less than 8-10 hours left. When I go offline I continue a longer skill.
Sometimes I pause a skill at 8 hours and do something else. When i go to sleep I continue the 8 hours one and switch skills again when I wake up.
I have never missed more than 30 minutes of training this way.
For me I do not need a skill cue. But I am not agenst it also. If it is inplemented, fine by me. If not, I won't miss it.

The best solution is a 1-ahead queue, ie you can set your "next" skill which will start training after the current one completes, but that's it. This solves the problem with skills finishing at awkward times (at work, middle of the night, on holiday, during DT, during server outage) and reduces the micro-management of low-level skills to some extent. And also helps if you just plain forget (EVEMon ftw).
However it still requires you to log in to attend to your skills on a regular basis, which I think is intended in the original design.
I'm less keen on the multi-tasking primary/secondary skills idea - people want their next skill level ASAP, so I can't see that version catching on.

what i would like to know is why, after 3 years of negating it, ater 3 years of saying that there will NEVER EVER be a skill queue, after 3 years of copying&pasting devs answers everytime someone asked it on the forums, why, after 3 years, they have decided to give it a chance.
any dev willing to explain if you are bending to carebears, if you have seen the light or if you are just bored of us, and decided to put it on the drawing board just for us to be quiet about it?

hmm actually what you just made me think, its true when we're active we dont really need the skill que, its when we're not around to get the skill switched in time, say a few months leave of some sort, which brings me to this proposal:
have skill que as an emergency option, much like POSes, if you are going to be gone for a long while, you set your charachter to "reinforced" mode, where u cant undock or refit or switch ships, and only then enable the skill que option and que upto 2 skills.
wacha think?

Skill queues.... feh.
Sometimes games are just hard and you need to try and manage them and take the pain along with playing. You play, you learn and eventually you understand that sometimes somethings are unavoidable. |

I would like a type of queue, it would make the early part of training so much better and easier. Micro managing 10m-4h skills in the early stage can really be a pain and put some people of for sure.
When you have the skills that take days, weeks, month it's ok, which most players in the thread are at.
But that said we make do with that we've got. I personally like the DT 9pm-10pm (AEST) my prime-time and skills that run out during this DT ;) But that said most problems are taken care of when I'm at work, so get home to a relatively bug free game :D

well, WoW subscribers wanted Alliance Shamans and Horde Paladins, i don't think what "their subscribers want" is really something to base off of. It would be a nice feature, but I would rather have bugs taken care of and petitions looked at.

Uhh, no they didn't. They wanted to be unique, and they wanted their respective class to be viable in both PvE and PvP. Judging by the reaction of the WoW general forum, Blizz made a big mistake.
Don't compare the WoW general forum to the EVE general forum. It's apples and oranges until people like you try to make weird tasting smoothies.
To the topic at hand, a skill queue would be nice, but so would the ability to change skills via the EVE website. They have the EVE mobile version planned too, where you can use your cell phone to change things around. But yea, being able to change skills from eve-online.com would be most ideal.

It's not just carebears that would like a skill queue. After all, some of us can't predict with any certainty when we'll next be able to log in. Of course, the "solution" is a long skill, but after a month or so of unpredictability, it becomes very difficult to balance and you'll eventually sacrifice some training time just so you can get a critical skill done.
I can cope without a skill queue (I don't freak out if I'm not training a skill), but it's one of those things I think would be nice, like an EVE client that doesn't crash at really inopportune moments.

what u dont realize is that CCP dont want to offer a skill queue(a perfectly logical implement to the game) to its playerbase.
why?
addiction. they dont want u leaving for long time, u might like it and never come back. they want u hooked on the game, always worrying when skilltraining is over and what u gonna train next... keeps the playerbase addicted, involved and never leaving....
a big part of the danger of online games like this lie on this type of thing.
just ask yourself, if the very nice skill queue came to play and u could plan your training ahead, and take a nice break for 3 months or whatever... CCP are running the risk of loosing players...
SAD. but true.
if they were a bit more like they claim to be, and a little less nervous about their product, they naturally would have put this logical and playerfriendly feature into the game a LONG time ago.
this feature, has been one of my top things i wished were implemented into the game, i doubt it ever will.

Edited by: Presidente Gallente on 24/07/2006 12:03:18 I don't like the idea of a skill queue. It sounds comfortable to setup 107 skills and let them run. But it kills a special random dynamic behaviour in the game. Some players probably take care about their skills in time, others not. The result is that some player's skills will grow up faster , the others are a few days or weeks behind. I am aware that a online game is totally different to a normal limited game. I am aware that it forces me to log-in often to check out what's going on or what's about my actual skill status. In this case I use EVEMon to plan my skills. It's not a big deal to log-in at a special time. It's O.K. that EVE is sometimes a part my daily schedule list in my brain because that's the nature of an online-game. It's O.K. to miss the next skill schedule for hours or a day because it's not a big desaster. Relax guys ... it's just a game and not a contest: who's reaching the skill limits first. Online games are addictive in a special way. Everyone has to find a way to deal with this. Of course CCP will force the gamers to log-in to EVE as much as possible.
If you free your mind from the senseless point that a server downtime will f*ck up your skill taining you will figure out that everything is fine with it.
At the end - with or without a skill queue - we all end up at a similar skill level ... one guys earlier other ones later.
That's an online gamers life ...

Personnally i train "big stuff" when im asleep, or working, and when i log-on i abort that training, train little stuff then stick another big train or switch back on the big train i aborted when i log-off. The way i see it this covers my ar*e if im logged for an extended period..and for those awkward 9 hr trains, if im that bothered, i`ve shown the missus how to log on and she switches my training for me. there`s always a way other than berating devs who in my book work harder than any other game dev to keep its customers happy...and no i dont work for them. This maybe a dead horse subject for vets but remember noobs exsist and dont have an encyclopedic knowledge of the previous years posts, so if you see an all to familiar subject maybe use those 5mins to make a cuppa an chill, instead of bumping it. Enjoy EVE thats what its there for.

You sir win internets. The idea of skill queuing is just heart breaking as it just dumbs everything down - as I said previousl, there should be pain to aquire new and shiney things. Why don't you just make macro mining legal while you're at it.

The scream for a skill queue is a pure noob case. If you climb up the skill ladder beyond level III the schedule for new skill levels is expanding more and more and you will do your skilling within the normal gameplay rythm. So where's the problem?! The only tip I can give: be patient especially in the first 3 months and your path in EVE will lead you to a special skill ladder depending on your experience and needs.

When your new skill is set to complete at 9 AM and you're not gonna be home until after 6 PM, that's when you really want skill queuing or something, so you don't lose those 9 hours. yeah you can schedule something else the night before, but then you delay that skill you really wanted to be ready for tonight.
Actually what would be better is to have the character web page that shows your skills, if you could actually start a new skill using that page, it would be even more awesome. Then you could start a new skill from work! w00t
