Or at least it saved me from a ton of boredom. I haven't had this much fun playing a game since I first learned to play Magic. So I'd just like to take this opportunity to thank CCP for an awesome game and, hell, just thank the entire UK for being so cool. God save the queen. You guys should really advertise more in the US, cause California has an enormous gaming community and none of my friends have heard of EVE.

He brings up a good point though. EVE really should do some advertising in the US. Or better yet, dont even advertise, just get a cd copy of the game in stores or something so people hear about it.

Their is more more exposure on the web these days for Eve. Just earlier today went to check up on BSG and was happy to see a very large Eve advertisment on the front page of SciFi.com

As a matter of fact CCP has been advertising quite a bit in the US now. In some of the largest gaming magazines we have over here they have 2-page advertisements of the Leviathan being escorted by 4 scorps, normally towards the front of the magazines at that. Also, as stated before, there is quite a large bot of advertising on the internet now as well, and it seems that both are working. I have seen quite a few new characters around the Rens area. http://soipf.com/images/malfactor.jpg

Do not forget that there is a saying "There is no such thing as bad publicity" in Hollywood. That is certainly true as well for EVE, considering that last April 2005, the world of EVE was shaken by the actions of a certain few who call themselves the Guiding Hand Social Club.
They have to this day have a PC Gamers UK article about them, and a NewScientist article as well (dont have links tho, sorry :( ).
EVE not getting enough publicity? Are you joking, sir? -

I'm a U.S. player, been playing for 2 years or so. The main problem with the U.S. market is...well....WoW
The main concern about EVE from what I've been told by my friends is that its been around for awhile and the open ended nature of skill point training is that it never stops and that if you join now it would be too late to catch up. I know this isn't necessarily the case but to be honest, at this point of the game the complexity of it is a bit beyond most people (don't mean to rag on my U.S. brethren). I guess they're just happy to grind to the maximum level killing goblins and mindlessly smash buttons in a certain order. I played WoW for awhile and it just got old. Oh well, to each is own I guess

that is really the truth, more people are content with smashing goblins than an in depth game with a huge learning curve

It's the complex and log learning curve that makes EVE so appealing to me. I may be a newb, started in February of this year but every day I learn something new and can put it to good use. I think EVE have a great future and the old timers are not invincible, learned that about 6 weeks ago. Here in the U.S. most people are stuck in the WoW and EQ2 ruts but I discovered EVE and have been liberated.
Thanks CCP, Iceland and the U.K. for such a great gaming experience. |

Eve is kinda funny.
If you had a good life before EVE, then it has probably ruined your life.
But if you had a boring life, or lots of problems, EVE seems to fill the void quite nicely.

They're still around, and as successful as ever, from what I understand. I read a recruitment post from their CEO in on the recruitment forum a few days ago, and thought about applying, but then realized I don't have the manipulative skills required to be a successful member of that corp. ___________________________ |

The problem is that advertising is only effective if people can find the game in question.
In the US there is still the mind set of getting a game "in hand" off the shelf as being the standard and desired way of getting a game (or any software for that matter). If a person goes to a gaming store and asks for EVE most attendants will simply look at them funny (trust me I've seen this in action personally) because there are no boxed versions of EVE currently. Sure the more learned people know they can download the client but there is just something about holding the game box that is psychologically comforting to many. It most probably has to do with the fact that people feel more confident with a ôhard copyö version of any software they have should a system crash and require the re-installation of their software. Downloaded clients are not viewed as equals in this regard by many and having to re-download a 500+mb client (donÆt get me started on backups etc., they are almost never done by ætypicalÆ home users), after a system reset, is considered too annoying to deal with by many.
Then there are those that just like to see that cool box on their shelf.
What CCP needs to do is to re-issue the box game but with updated graphics and the newest client. If they tied that to a good ad campaign there is no telling how many more would sign up. Look at the popular MMORPGs currently, all have boxed versions in the stores. Some have been out for years and they are still on the shelves even though EVE is arguably ônewerö then they are because of the continual updates. Since the current EVE is like a new game, why not market it as such?
Just some thoughts.

Eve is more successful today than it was when it was "brand new" and sitting on store shelves, so I wouldn't worry about it.
Eve will never be as popular as WoW. It's designed to appeal to a small niche of players.

EVE is too difficult to be infested by all dem wow kiddies, good thing too else we'd have people crying for 'end game material' and 'epix' and that kind of crap..

I've been here for about three weeks now, and found a GREAT game I never knew about. There was always quiet whispers of EVE on the other forums, but no real advertising going on in the states.
Hack if I wasn't cruising the VN boards one day on my lunch hour I still may not found out about this little gem of a game.

TBH if they were going to do that then I think they should wait until kali is out and the graphical updates are complete. That, in addition to the EVE-China launch should give them enough lead-time to prepare for the massive influx of players that would try out the game. They would need a publisher though and that could create problems in the long run. I'd probably recommend Ubisoft over any other publisher as the only other MMO they currently have is Shadowbane, which is fantasy-based, so it wouldn't really be competing with EVE that much and would essentially be a WIN/WIN situation for UBI.
Honestly in my opinion they are fine to stick with electronic distribution, as long as any ads they do run very clearly direct people to the EVE-Online site.

It seems to be advertised just fine in the US. I see ads in Computer Gaming World and ads prominently placed at scifi.com. I think they're finding their target audience.

I think the re-boxing is a great idea. If I was in charge, I would even run a TV ad campaign to get the ball rolling. The loop would then be complete: the TV ad would spark people's curiosity; they would then log onto the net and look around; they would then very quickly be willing to lay down the $20 the boxed version would cost them. I think this one advertising push would easily double EVE's player base. You have no idea how many US gamers WoW has alienated...

The slow but steady growth eve has accomplished may be better than a massive spike. As long as subscriptions keep growing as they have been it may be better to take an incremental approach to promotions and advertising.

I'm not sure CCP wants a whole boat-load of people all at once. There are times when they have difficulty with the ones they have (quantity). It is almost an elite 'by invite' only type game.... and I like that. And by elite I mean really elite because the quality is phenominal and if everybody in California knew about it *shudders* it would not be good for the server(s).

I agree with the above post, w don want too many new players at once, God knows Emipire is full to the brim as it is.
Luckily EVE has is own manner of natural selection, the less adaptable you are the faster you die. In the end, the vets are all people worth gaming with/in opposition to. We all depend on one another to keep the game interesting.

if you really want to spread the love, download the latest full installer version to CD, plus some handy eve-apps mebbe, add nice jewelcase with a spiffy logo insert and a trial code you sent to yourself. then you have something Real and Tangible. you can put it in their hands, say "Here.. This is Eve"
spread the joy.
