I've been playing about week non-stop and this thread has helped me out loads, many thanks to all who have posted.
I can't really contribute anything that hasn't been said before, all i've really got to say is do a scan at every stargate, you'd be surprised the goodies you find floating around

Great Thread! Fastest why for a noob to make money is probably trading minerals. Buying minerals in one station flying them to another and selling them at a mark-up. But honestly we've all made our forutnes in EVE with our own methods..
Question: How do I fly to the ore identified on my long range scanner? Example: i'm in space and scan a ridiculous range like 10*10^8 km, and see all these astroids, and i want to mine them. How would i fly over to these astroids? Do I just fly to belts and use my ore-make-up scanner?

My tip of the day: When mining in really low security systems, zip around first to all the Asteroid belts. When you are there, quickly do a scan, and select a high end astroid that is really far away from the center of the belt (>150KM). Then place it as a bookmark (I call mine A, B, C, to keep it simple). Then when you have a few of these bookmarks, when you warp back in, you will be far away from the pirates, who while in the same belt as you, are too far away to do anything about it. Be wary though, as them seem to be tricky. One time they warped out, and then warped back in within 30 klicks from me. So I can't nap ;-) Great thread!

Something every newbie should know.
Concord hurts a lot. When you take that nice new missile cruiser out for a test flight. Don't fire to near the concord vessels or sentry turrets.
I lost a kestrel this way. it hurts even more when you don't know about the concept of insurance for your ships.
Basically don't shoot at or too near(2km) of a concord ship they will blow you out of the sky

Somebody please explain how to determine the right price to set if you want to sell something.
The gap between selling & buying prices as shown on the markets are often enormous (eg you're only offedere 500 isk for an item with a sell price of 10k isk). Do players have to accept this? --------------------- ...thi starz ¢ moovd |

When doing agent mission and you have finished the task, you don't have to go back to your agent to tell him you are done... If you are not at a station, just dock at one and tell him. Might get you the bonus, if time is running out...
If doing a kill mission many jumps away, equip for speed and take kill equipment with you, then change it at the station in the system where you are doing the mission (if there is one, if not at the nearest system).
If switching between different tasks (like mining, fighting, traveling...), put the equipment for each task into a container (small one will do). Saves a lot of time when switching and it's easy to take the setup you need with you.

Here is a good tip for finding the rough value of an item you want to sell. Go to 3 regions and check the regional sell orders for that item.
There is a "hub" or "highway" running thru the middle of the eve universe. Yulai appears to be at the center, and systems like Amarr, New Caldari, Luminaire, Tourier, and Pator are all connected to it.
If you are looking for a ship at the lowest possible price, or even looking to buy up a bunch of minerals and resell them for marked up prices, set your autopilot to the above mentioned systems. They are all in different regions and you can check an enormous amount of market from that path. If you are smart about marketing you can make a fortune by learning the map.
Quick marketing tip: If you want to sell your items you should find a station where alot of other items are sold. If you put that heavy beam laser for sale at a distant unpopulated system, no one will ever buy it cuz no one ever stops there :) - also check the history on the item, regionally and system wide. If no one has bought a heavy beam laser in that region since release, chances are no one will now. Just recycle it and sell the minerals :)
Hot systems for buying/selling from my experience:
Yulai, Nonni, Luminaire, Pator, New Caldari, Amarr, Tourier, Algogille |

I'm going to post the most obvious one I could think of, because it makes such a major difference.
Check the optimum range of your weapons, preferably once they are fitted and loaded, as different ammo types will alter the range. Then, when in combat, orbit at this range from the enemy.
I know it's obvious to anyone who has played for even a short while, but I can't think of any better adive to give to a true noob.
Also, make use of the 'orbit at current distance' option to really fine tune. I love doing that to drop me just outside my enemy's range.

In regards weaponary you can findout when you can lock a target by adjusting your scanner settings.
First get the scanner on screen if you don't already by clicking the icon that loocks like a radar screen down by the shield and armour tracks.
Next hit the auto tab if its not already set and then hit the settings button. There is quite a few options on there one of them is "mark when taget is in range", this will put a red mark next to the name on the scanner when you can lock on.

irl 1 AU (Astronomical Unit) is the distance from the Earth to the sun. so roughly 93 million miles. (i do hope i get this right and dont look a complete tit) so that equates to very roughly 150 million KM or 150,000,000 km. the distance you stated of 2 Billion KM is equal to roughly 13.3 AUs. like i said thats IRL (if i have remembered my numbers right) so i dont see why CCP would have any reason to change it. :P -------------------------------------------

Two tips from me.....
1. When dragging items into your cargo using the shift button, if you drag to an empty slot it will automatically display the max number you can drag to fill your cargo when asking how much you want to move - saves all the guesswork when trying to fill cargo to the max.
2. When releasing a mixture of drones, say 4 miners and 4 hammerheads, select 4 of the same type to command them all at once then to switch to the other type just right click and use the "Invert Selection" option. Very handy and took me 3 weeks to discover it >.<

One question that I keep seeing is what to do with criminal DNA.
So here the answer
Keep it untill an agent asks you for it. If you have no intention of ever running agent missions sell it or scrap it.

Here's a useful tip to make use of that ability. After a hard day's mining when your cargo hold is full, you might want to take home some of that useful rat salvage that has accumulated in your vicinity. After all, it's often more valuable than the equivalent volume of ore. The problem is, how do you know how much ore to jettison to make room for the salvage? Quick & easy solution: open the cargo container you're interested in, drag all your ore into it, drag the items you want into your hold, then drag all the ore back again. EVE will tell you the maximum quantity that will now fit, and the remainder will be left in the floating container. Job done, no jettison required
Also, it's worth pointing out that reprocessing salvage is often more lucrative than selling it. (It might seem obvious to check, but someone I met last night couldn't be bothered with all that).

I don't know if there's an in-game method, but FRAPS works. It's a simple third-party utility that works in OpenGL and Direct3D games. It will log your results and calculate the max, min and average, if you want it to. From www.fraps.com

Not at all. Check the best buying/selling prices for the whole region in the Market screen (you can click the Price header in the Supply & Demand tabs to put items in order of ascending/descending price). Or, if you're really keen, travel to various regions and compare. You don't have to accept any of these prices, however. You can set your own price to buy or sell at by clicking the Place Order button. If you're selling, the items will be removed from your hangar and placed in the market system (click Orders in your Wallet, or look for your items in the market), for the duration that you specify (1 day, 3 days, etc). If they haven't sold in that time, they'll be returned to the hangar floor at the station where you put them up for sale. Be warned that there seems to be a commission taken. A Buy order works in the same way (presumably: I haven't done it), with the items being delivered to your buying station by the seller.
As for what price you set, that's up to you. I think the reason you see such big differences is that many of those items are being sold by real people, and they're as greedy and/or clueless as you or I .
Edit: I think questions like that belong in a separate thread. This thread is meant to be for passing on Tricks of the Trade .

Edited by: Helplessandlost on 25/03/2004 18:46:14 Thanks, pulled a lot of good info off this thread - I have one question though that I haven't been able to find an answer too yet. Is there anywhere where you can find the optimum configurations on ships? I.E. I'm going mining is 1.0 in my probe what would be the best items to equip. I.E. I'm going mining in .6 in my probe what would be the best items to equip?
Thanks for making me less Helplessandlost

If you havent already try the Help channel ingame. Very helpfull people in there that can usually answer anything you throw at them or at least give you some idea of where you can find that info. Can be accessed on the left menu under channels tab, Hope this helps.

Ship manouvering is easy!
Double click on empty space and your shipp will fly that way. To set you speed you can click on the spped indicator and set the maximum speed. If you want to go with full speed again just double click on it.
Now take a shuttle or a frig , go out and fly throug gates , and stations... it is fun to fly!
A tip for directional scanner. It will scan the direction your camera is looking. No metter where your ship is faceing. The scan area is a cone , so if you can not find something, it is maybe above or belowe you... Think in 3D
I hope I could help.
