When you loose security status you can fix it by killing rats. However when you loose standings with an empire by doing missions, there is no 'practical' way of fixing it...
The only way i have seen is by doing MORE missions and then declining storylines.
Also, i have seen a friend of mine is -5 with Caldari State, he has done quite a lot of missions since then and has not fallen any further, does this mean that -5 is the worst you can become?
One more thing, diplomacy increases your standings by 0.4 per level. If you train that to 5 that would boost you from -5 to -3?
What if you trained that to 5 and then did more missions, would that take you down and make the skill worthless? Or would it then not go any further than -3 because -5 seems to be the limit?
And if that is that is the case, would training that skill to level 5 mean that you can go into any empire system at all with no death from the navy, even if you became really bad with them?
Sorry, lots of questions at once, i just saw this and started to wonder, lol.

Yes, there is
The only way i have seen is by doing MORE missions and then declining storylines.
That makes no sense
Also, i have seen a friend of mine is -5 with Caldari State, he has done quite a lot of missions since then and has not fallen any further, does this mean that -5 is the worst you can become?
Dunno, exactly, whats the lowest sec possible. But it makes sense that -10 is the worst as +10 is the best

Who cares? -3 is as bad as -5, consequence wise
And if that is that is the case, would training that skill to level 5 mean that you can go into any empire system at all with no death from the navy, even if you became really bad with them?
No
Sorry, lots of questions at once, i just saw this and started to wonder, lol.
So many questions, yet not the obvious one. So let me help ya out....
Q)What do you do when your sec is so low with a race that none of their agents will talk to you? A) You work for Sisters of Eve or Interbus to improve your sec as they give sec to all 4 races.
I worked my way up from a -1.2 and it was not fun.

Err, the skill bonus is applied to the difference between your standing and +10. Being -5.0, that'd give you 20% * 15 = 3, raising your standing to -2.0 Is that where factions starts shooting at you?

Well, I'm pretty sure the reason your not going below -5 is because your standings with empires work the same way as your sec status, once you get to +5 sec status.... it becomes increasingly more difficult to gain status , piwatz have it a little easier because u can gank noobs all day and take decent sec hits regardless, I've heard getting from -9.9 to -10 can take months. I don't know the math but the point is once you hit -5 or +5 gaining, losing status is a time consuming task.

This is correct. You can go into NPC empire space anytime your standing with that faction (Amarr, Caldari etc) is greater than -5.0. As soon as it drops below -5.0, then you are kill on sight to all racial NPCs.
Faction standings work differently to CONCORD/sec status in that regard. So with a -1.0 Amarr standing, you can still enter all Amarr space. However, with a -1.0 (I think) sec status, you can't enter any 1.0 space, period.

At what point do the NPC rats go from red overview icon to white icon and not regard you as KOS?
If you do missions for Guristas for example, what standing must you have before you can mine in asteroid belts unmolested by their belt patrols? You can't have it both ways, if you have a low standing with empire factions, they will shoot at you. Therefore if you have a high standing with the rat faction that patrols the belts, they should leave you alone.
Anything less makes it pointless doing missions for the NPC rats.

soultion all factions should have one basic agent accessible even if u are at maxed out negative -5 standings (yes u have always killed us but work for this agent till u get to say the next one at -4.5 or -4 and then u can get back into our good books ) offset it would be a level 1 , -20Q agent and it would be kidna time consuming (of course cosmos is another option)

People need to stop telling people to work for Sisters of Eve.
SoE IS NO LONGER POSITIVE STANDING TO ALL 4 EMPIRE FACTIONS!
To repair your standing, you can just work for the ally of that faction (for example if you are low Gallente, than work for Minmatar) or purposely fail important missions for the enemy of that faction (for example if you are low Gallente, accept a Caldari important mission and than fail it.)

Interbus doesn't offer important missions for way over a year. Officials been talking about removing that now useless faction completely when the factional warfare arrives.
IB was meant to offer transportation services for goods and pilots. That was never implemented and parts where realised in shuttles and player courier missions instead. --*=*=*--

Not for faction reasons. You need to be smart though about who you run missions for. Especially if your in research its important.
One good plan is if you plan to run Minmatar missions then also run a few Caldari missions. Get Minm as high as you can but keep Cald at around 0. That will let you keep Amar about -.5 .
You will end up losing rat faction, but you only need rat faction if you plan to run missions for them - which ruins Empire really fast.

I have discovered the answer!!
InterBus.
They are friendly with all the Empires, and dislike all pirates. If you should fall too bad, just make sure you can still enter an area with a good InterBus agent and do missions, in theory it should improve your standings with all the Empires.

The navy npc's that consider you KOS are a joke. Or at least they used to, maybe they've been boosted since I last ran into them (probably about a year ago).
The Khanid used to sent 2 frigs and a cruiser after me, that couldn't even pop me in an afk'ing shuttle. It's a drag when you want to camp a a station though.
One thing not to do, is shoot back at them and then warp to a gate with customs of their race. I did this once (before you got the yellow aggro timer on your screen) and got bbq'ed pretty fast by customs that would normally ignore me.
With interbus not giving out important missions, it's all pretty shady tbh. I can't recall exactly, but I think I remember that SOE weren't an option for me somehow (maybe they don't like Khanid, I'm not sure). I concluded that there wasn't an actual ingame way to improve my standings. Fortunately a GM agreed with me and fixed them for me (the timer was bugged as well, the gate npc's would still kill me even after an hour).
Btw, Interbus doesn't give out important missions because those are coded to refer you to an agent for a different corp of the same faction. The Interbus faction only has the Interbus corp in it...

Nope no practical way. My Caldari standing is effectively unrepairable, and so are all my pirate faction standings ( which is a lot more annoying then Caldari standing which I like being low. )

Not entirely true. The reason behind it lies in the way the factions interact with each other.
Example: Amarr likes Caldari. Their standing with other is around 7.5 iirc. This is important, as it also means that you can run Amarr missions forever, but the standing increase for important missions is capped for the allied faction at 7.5!!! So, if you should have standings for Amarr and Caldari both at 7.5, an additional important mission for Amarr will increase your standing with Amarr but NOT with Caldari! (although you will still get an entry in the log)
The same applies in the opposite direction: Amarr dislikes Minmattar. Their standing towards each other is -5. If your standings should be +9 with Amarr and -5 with Minmattar, an important mission for Amarr will further increase your standings with the Empire, but your standing with Minmattar will not drop below -5. Only way I can imagine to drop below -5 should be, if you shoot Minmattar ships during a mission (or perhaps the ones they send out after you when you cross their borders with -5). That I cannot confirm ... yet

Im just starting up missions myself.
So, if i do a bunch of Gallente missions until i get up to the next level of agent, then go and do the same with Caldari, and keep switching between the two, i should be good with the lot?
Or is it not as easy as that?

Are you sure about this? When I complete Gallente storyline missions, I receive standing losses to Serpentis. My standing with Serpentis is way below -9.5 despite their -9 standing with the Gallente Federation.
The faction standings you mention affect the standing gains / losses to friendly / hostile factions that you get for completing storyline missions. A standing of 7.5 will result in a gain of 75% of the main standing gain.
For example, if you run an Amarr Empire storyline mission and receive a 10% Amarr standing gain you will receive a 7.5% standing gain to Caldari State. You will also receive a -2% standing loss to the Gallente Federation.

WRONG!!! look at my standings and tell me that that is correct. Unfortunatetly misguided not long term playing players giving advice these days. IF you don't understand the mechanics shut up about em. Relative standings between empires determines the percentage increase of your standing. The more parties like each other the bigger the gain is for doing a important mission for the other.

Worst you can become is -9.9(repeating)
Diplomacy raises your standing by 4% of 10-current standing per lvl. Which is 0.4 if your standing is 0.
So the skill doesn't become useless, it's relative effect becomes larger and larger the lower you get however!! it doesn't actually repair your standings anymore if you're -5 or lower since you can't work for a faction if you're -3 think lowest is like -1 or something.
Standing decrease/increases work of 10-current standing so the lower/higher you go, the more difficult it becomes to increase/decrease it further. Let's just say that going to 10 ( it does round it to that eventually ) takes a lot of doing.

I cannot give any answers on how to fix your standing, but I can give first hand experience on how the minnnie repblic fleet responds when I pay visit.
1 Cruiser and 2 frigates spawn about 15-20km away, pretty much anywhere you go. The frigs will slowly fly towards you and start firing at you. They will NOT web, scram or jam you. The cruiser will do likewise.
Shooting them is completely "legal" . They will just respawn after a short time, and they respawn individually. You will not lose any standing by shooting them, neither will customs or gate guns respond when you fly to a gate. They pop-up says so, but I've remained untouched so far. I have even shot a few ships at gates without any problems.
On the other hand, they can easily break a cruisers tank, not sure about a BS's.
Enjoy the free fireworks

Broken is the fact there are still log entries being made about standing increases for the allied faction that no longer have an effect. My standing with Amarr is 9+, with Caldari 7.5 something and Ammatar 9.1 something. (So much for being noob ). Another important mission for Amarr will not increase my standing with Caldari or Ammatar. Doing one for Caldari will not affect the Amarr or Ammatar one. Same is true for the -5 i have with Minmattar.

You do take standing hits for destroying faction ships, so this can pull down you overall standings.
I will be doing a Gallente storyline mission tonight. My Serpentis standing is -9.62 and the Gallente <-> Serpentis standing is -9.0. I'll check the standings before and after running the mission and let you know.

OK... first off LexaKosh is right and once you hit the inter-faction standing you don't lose / gain standings to hostile / friendly factions as a result of a storlyline mission. The highest / lowest standing you can reach is the standing the other faction holds the primary faction in. For example, running Gallente Federation missions will not drop your Ammatar Mandate faction standing below -3.00. This is the standing the Ammatar Mandate hold the Gallente Federation in, not the other way round (-2.00 for info).
Second, the derived faction gain / loss is not the inter-faction standing. For example, both the Servent Sisters of EVE and the Gallente Federation hold each other in a standing of +8.00. However a 8.4% standing gain to the Federation does not result in a 6.72% (80% of 8.4%) derived gain to tSSoE -- strangely they get a 13.33% standing gain. On the other hand, both the Minmatar Republic and the Gallente Federation also hold each other in a standing of +8.00, and the derives Repulic standing gain is 80% of the Federation standing gain.
If anyone can shed any more light on to this, I'd be really interested in hearing your views.
Edit: I can share the standing gain / loss values if anyone wants to know.
Cheers, Arrs.

Just thought I would pipe in with my experience here... As long as you're not -5.0 with no ranks of diplomacy, it can be fixed. I went from a -4.87 Caldari to a -1.xx something simply by training diplomacy to 5, and now I'm running for the Caldari Navy.
Diplomacy is nice. Paying attention to the standings one cares about is nicer, but most n00bs (myself definitely included) didn't realize how limiting it is for a mission runner to be stuck in one or two regions for eternity due to running too many storylines for one faction. I got out just in time.
If you're < -2.0 with someone you'd like to talk to, you better find a friend of theirs that you can talk to. It is definitely possible to screw over your standings to a point of no return, and is relatively easy to do.

Originally by: Arrs Grazznic I will be doing a Gallente storyline mission tonight.
Cheers, Arrs.
Thx for verifying it. The noob was right

That's because of the size of the involved factions. The smaller the bigger the standing gain.

Edited by: Gariuys on 04/08/2006 05:06:15 And I will say that this was implemented quite recently then cause my standings are: SOE 10.00 Gallente Federation 9.98 Interbus 9.50 ORE 8.79 Minmatar Republic 8.53 The Society 8.07 Concord 3.15 Amarr 1.75 Jove Empire -1.30 Blood Raiders -3.92 Khanid -5.06 Thukker -5.24 Sansha -5.58 Caldari State -7.19 Amattar Mandate -7.56 ( Holds Gallente federation at -3, never killed any of their NPCs ) Mordu's Legion Command -8.50 Guristas - 8.60 Syndicate -8.98 ( holds Gallente fed at -6, never killed any of their NPCs ) Angel Cartel -9.58 Serpentis -9.98
Made two notes on the negatives on how this kinda proves this didn't happen for me, and all the positives don't follow it either. And I've only flown for one Gallente Federation corp... pretty obvious which one. This are the standings before connections/diplomacy btw. Connections lvl 2 and Diplomacy lvl 3(only used to keep Jove positive ))

I can't say if it has been like that forever. I noticed it when the Amarr COSMOS missions were introduced and i got quite big chunks of standing increases with them, but my caldari standing did not move an inch.
