well im a new player 3-4 weeks in and every pirate i have met has died to me after issuing his "25 mil or die" or words to that effect. Do people actually pay ransoms and is it only children that take the part of pirates ?

Yep, people pay on a regular basis. However, there are also a lot who just calls your mother a ***** or something like that, and then dies horribly.
And yes, I'm afraid that all pirates in EVE are played by 12-year-olds, most of whoom also play Counterstrike and XBOX live, and they freak out and beat up pets and smaller children should they happen to die.
This is a how most pirates in EVE are. Just switch out the CS for EVE.

Yep, people pay ransoms. I would pay if it was cheaper than losing my ship.
And aye, most pirates are between 14-16 years of age according to the latest pirate poll. Most get beat up in school and try to make up for it by shooting the mature people in EVE. Makes them feel good about themselves.

Edited by: Wild Rho on 31/07/2006 10:04:05 It's been quite a while since I've pirated (belt pirating not gate camping) but here are some basic tips I've found that tend to improve your chances of somone paying.
Knock them into half armour. - You want to make sure they know in no uncertain terms you can kill them. It's also handy if they try to call their mates in as you can finish them off nice and quick.
Be quick and polite. - When making a convo ransom just have one short and simple message you can paste in there. Keep it nice and polite. I don't mean you gotta say please and thank you but being an ass or just plain arrogant doesn't make you look cool or tough and it doesn't help your chances of getting the isk.
Time limit - Don't give the victim a chance to think. Make your demands and give them a short time to pay in. Don't let them stall you, at most give them an extra 20 seconds if they agree to pay and no more. This ensures they won't have a chance to call in their mates.
Don't be greedy - When ransoming you should only ever ask for maybe 20% of their ships market value (unless you know they are loaded with some high end stuff or have implants). It won't make you rich quick but it will mean you make isk more regularly from ransoming. Pods are generally good for ransoms between 5 to 10mil.
A typical ransom message I'd paste would be: "Send me XX isk or die. 30 seconds."
WE ARE DYSLEXIC OF BORG. Refutance is systile. Your ass will be laminated. - Jennie Marlboro

Eh come on, I only asked you for 2 or 3m?
But then when you were in hull damage I thought it would be funny to load my 280s with Quake and do some drive bys in web range.. man that was dumb.
Edit: I'm not ancient but I certainly don't think I am a "child", heh. Oh, and it still sucks that the MH-Sec dude (bathulas or wtfever) came in after you beat me and stole the t2 stuff from my cans, should have gone to you. - nerf 0.5+ |

You think you've got problems...I'm 40 next year. I don't know what it is but I still get this urge to wear an eye patch, buy a parrot and shout YARRR! at an unreasonably loud volume. (I don't kick my cat but I occasionally feel like it wouldn't be a bad idea.)
You know I always come back to the same basic thing....<0.5 is dangerous...says so when you jump, if you're not willing to take the risk of being killed or ransomed then stay the hell out of it.
If you take the risk then don't whine when someone blow's you into teenee bits because you've refused to pay a ransom.

i blew up 2 more dudes after you, before your m8 got me, both asked for 25, and both were much easier to kill than you were also. Just made me laugh all night that everytime i got ransomed the ransomers got done over.

TBH I prolly wouldn't ransom a young player personally, mainly because I know they wouldn't have enough isk to make it worth my while (unless they have "ALT" written all over them and there's a chance they may be loaded, hehe).
At the end of the day, it's all about making isk - but pirates still enjoy the feeling of podding someone if they're sure there's nothing to gain from letting them go.
And a footnote.... TURBULENT will ALWAYS honour ransoms, paying victims will go free.

tbh, if your attacker is from pirate coalition, snigg, veto etc any known pirate corp or alliance, the ransom -will- be honored, and if it is not, whoever killed you will be kicked from his corporation if you tell his CEO (now if having a guy who blows you up kicked isnt worth a few mill, then I dont know what is).

I have always asked the opposite question: Do people ever offer them?
I know that my corp does, I do, and that many do, but I just always seem to run into the kind of people who say "I don't care about the money, I have loads of it." "I wasn't looking for loot either, I don't need it."
To me that's just plain griefing. No profit in it for him/her, maybe points on a killboard.
I always ransom even if it's a noob in a condor (usually ask about 50-100k so I can make some kind of money and he learns the "less hard" way not to come waltzing into lowsec because he killed the deadspace training rats). If they don't pay, blam.
Caught a few noobs afk too.
But the point is ransoming is not done enough either way. Not asked enough, not paid enough. ___________________________________________

I made the mistake of trying to hunt a pirate on my second week in a destroyer and got ransomed for my trouble... yes I paid and yes she honoured it, it was a good fight.
I came back last night in a cruiser and podded her... didn't ransom her as her two mates were about in cruisers and one was sitting at 20k, don't know why it didn't go for me tbh. Hope she didn't have expensive implants heh, though I doubt it. Then I made like an egg and ran...
Ironically her bounty was about 65k more than the ransom was.

I've been offered ransoms a couple of times before, but never payed because the ransom was ridiculous. Both times the ransomer said they had a system, but I seriously doubted their ability to grasp economics. The first time I had already lost my ship, and as a 1 month old character with no implants was offered 10m not to lose my pod. The next time I was in a shuttle, had made it safely to a station, and was offered 25m for safe passage out.
I'd pay a ransom if I thought it was a fair price but I can see why so many people refuse to when the demands are so high.

Edited by: Portios Smith on 31/07/2006 22:36:06 I've ransomed 3 people, they all paid, they all got to leave safely. I am relatively new so I charge 50% of ship's market price. 125K for frigs (thinking bout just poping this) 2mill for Tier2 cruisers 3mill for tier3 cruisers 10mill for BC cruiser I'd **** my pants if I could ransom a BS
all the TII ships pwn me so I dont get to ransom those yet
No pods, got to get some more ISK and skills before I take the hardcore plunge in to outlaw.
BTW I am 34 and most of the people I know in my group are old farts too.

No it prob has more to do with the fact that he/she doesn't want to be bothered thinking about every single word, and proper sentance structure of every single thing he writes onto these forums. I don't either, though I have no problems writing at all, but for the forums of an online game, who's going to take that effort?

Well, my point is that for a moderately literate person, it doesn't take any effort.
