I've posted this one a few times, but hey, never hurts to post it again!
As it's been explained to me a few times, the vast majority of socket closed errors come from an ISP assigning the EVE data stream a really low priority when moving through the network. It's called packetshaping, and pretty much all ISPs do it nowdays.
EVE is kind of touchy about getting packets on-time and in the right order, and when it doesn't, you get a socket error. It's also why you can get a socket error on one client, while the second client is OK. Client 1's data stream drops below the "magic number" for EVE tolerance and dies, while stream 2 is still just above the line and lives.
So, there you go. If your ping plot looks OK, and it's not a major outage, try pestering your ISP. It isn't really hard, but I think there are customers that you can lose in a good way and there's customers that you can lose in a bad way. If people come in and fundamentally don't like EVE Online, then I think that might be a good way of losing customers. . -á--CCP Soundwave |

So much this, Lady Fap.
Minor quibble: It's called traffic shaping, and it is accomplished by packet sniffing. There isn't, to my knowledge, anything called packet shaping. Packets are all pretty much the same shape. :)
But yeah, someone should probably set this as a signature. Maybe everyone should. Still probably wouldn't put a dent in the butthurt though.

Agondray wrote:i have this problem only with my laptop and now my desktop, every hour from what ever time it begins i will constantly get socket closed, my desktop will be fine.
If it was isp related then both of my computers should be doing it and it should be based on just playing 1 game, other mmos or even basic streaming should be getting disrupted, which it is only eve
The internet is a /little/ more complicated than most people realise.
When people say 'The problem is ISP related' they mean one of two things:
- It's literally your ISP being ****
- It's actually somewhere on the route between your ISP and CCP, which will be traversing a bunch of different networks
Unfortunately, you don't have a commercial agreement with any of the intermediate carriers, so getting an issue fixed can be tricky. Issues can stem from things like bad configuration, someone getting DDOSed (saturating a link, so your traffic can't get through it. Doesn't just happen if CCP is ddossed. these things can sprawl), bad hardware, and other fun issues to diagnose.
A common way to look at the route is with the command traceroute. It's not perfect, but it can give an idea (some places just block the traffic that people use for it) Woo! CSM 9! http://fuzzwork.enterprises/

Well there may be a lot of different problems which may cause the same error. But I think no one can deny that the connection problems where suddenly a large portion of the EVE population gets disconnected are increasing.
It would be great if they communicate that they do something and what they are doing. Is it always the same problem or are this incidents unrelated? Will there be a solution soon that stabilizes the service or is there nothing you can do?
It's getting a bit frustrating with all the disconnects and all we hear from CCP is "oh, there seams to be a problem", "eh, the problem seams to be fixed". At the moment it just looks like your servers and cables are regularly on fire. It will probably stay that way if you don't tell us what's going on. the Code ALWAYS wins |

Had my first "socket closed" of that season today during a jump, shortly after TQ was down / not available widely ... so, if this is lag related, this would also explain why I was not able to lock PvP targets before warp yesterday whereas in the very same situation this always worked before. Is there some monitor, tool showing me the connection quality of the client? Ping / tracert seems to be blocked by TQ. I'm my own NPC alt. |
