Normally always ISP / Route related. Rarely CCPs side.
Test it on a VPN (Mullvad - free no signup trial) and see if you keep getting the disconnects. If you don't, you can let CCP know through the ticket system along with your route details. They can only do anything if it's their 'side' though, otherwise it's between your ISP and them. |

True. However, it has been CCP's side (or very close) lately - because many times when I log back on with my Jita trade alt, there's almost nobody in local.
Traceroute also shows the problem is the last hop before ccp's servers. |

So basically you mean it's not been CCP's side. Since it's not actually the servers. Contact them and let them know which hub is having issues though and they will take action if they can. |

You know that? What even suggests that? Besides the sheep mentality on this forum in regards to this issue. Please do present the evidence which has allowed you to conclude this.
Here is what we know:
- There are many players having the exact same issue. - The issue started coming up for the majority of these players around the same time. - The players reporting the issue are in different parts of the world. - No one seems to be reporting issues staying connected to any other server. - When logging back in, large chunks of players have also lost connection.
Whether it is CCP's servers or not, it is certainly on CCP to figure this out. To look at the evidence at hand and conclude it's on the users or their ISPs to do so is idiotic. |

I've had zero issues past weeks connecting to the CCP servers. Western Europe (Portugal) here btw
With that fact, the "many players" probably were routed thru a path that has been having issues for a few weeks back. Also considering the time gap this happens (from forum posts) It might be an issue with hops that get congested on the 11pm/1am UTC bracket?
Honestly something similar happened to me with Steam, where I could login but for some reason couldn't access the store. It happened to me and probably very few others since I searched the interwebs for this issue and there wasn't much to work around. Several visual tracerts with pingplotter later, I pinned down to one of their CDN servers from akamai (not steam itself tho). Later on, issues were solved. I now connect fine to steamstore, since Claranet, the hub before the content server somehow "shortened" the pathway from my pc to the content server that serves my region, going from more than 10 hops to just 4.
So yes, it might be an issue not on the EVE servers, but maybe CCP *can* help out by slapping the wrist on their providers.
Also, "closed socket" errors usually happen because there's too much latency. EVE might not be that much dependant on bandwith, but it is quite sensible to network latency. One of the hops starts to bog down the connections for some reason (traffic shaping *might* be one of the reasons btw), latency starts to go up.

I seem to recall that the message used to give more information, IIRC it read something like this: Your account failed a heartbeat check and will be restarted
Which made it a little less likely that hundreds of threads would appear on the subject.

(Assuming the same sort of error) think that error is when your account actually manages to stay connected to the server, but it lost a "tick" for some reason ( low percentage of packet loss perhaps?) Usually socket closed errors is when the client and the server cannot keep synced anymore and the server throws a fit. Due to how the server is built and the connection is established, and since *all* the clicks and keys typed are transmitted and client receives echo back for each command, this means that there is a queue for commands that can only advance when the client receives confirmation. example, if you type 2 lines of text too fast on chat, the second line will only be transmitted if the client receives confirmation of the first. Usually takes less than a second, mainly because this mechanism is also used as a way to prevent chat lag.
Either way, and if I'm not mistaken, "missing heartbeat" is when your client send a command, server replies but your client doesn't, and you send another command to which the server replies but your client acknowledges it, while "Socket closed" is, I think, when client sends a string of commands but the server doesn't reply in a timely manner, or doesn't reply at all because, for some reason, it thinks you disco'ed, so it closes connection, server side. (bit akin to ping timeout errors from IRC days). Latency can cause the second, packet loss can cause the first, or so I think it's how it is.
Because if this, and to keep it "sane" game-wise, the server is probably operating with very tiny intervals so to keep everything in sync. This also means that the connection, again, needs to be extremely stable and low on latency.
And no, you can have a 512kb connection with much less latency than a 100mbit connection. It all depends on everything that lies between you and the destination (even cable quality).

One of the hops starts to bog down the connections for some reason (traffic shaping *might* be one of the reasons btw), latency starts to go up. Well I run +10 clients and sometimes some of the clients survive while the rest socket reset. Sometimes all of them socket reset either at the same time or one after the other.
Tracerts while d/cing in game shows fantastic pings till the london area. The forums will also go down for me too for a bit.
Meanwhile WOT MWO warthunder Steam (PS2 l4d2 POE TF2) terra ffxiv SC SC2 Star citizen and more show clean pings before and during the mass d/ces in eve.
This is entirely out of the control of my isp or even my isp's isp. This is something that is occurring near the servers.
Clearly though some people are not being effected. Even some of my clients will go through mass d/ces with only a big lag spike to show for it. |

'Some of my clients close, but not all':
Socket closed messages happen when (for whatever reason) the client does not recieve a message it's expecting, in a timely fashion.
If, for example, you're sitting in a station, doing nothing at all, you have a better chance to not see the message, if there's a brief interruption between you and CCP. Your client just wasn't expecting anything at the time. If you tried opening the market, and, say, a link was saturated somewhere between CCP and you, then you're more likely to see it.
Make sense? Eve's very light on bandwidth, sending only what is needed. It means it's a little more likely to survive very short net issues. Woo! CSM 9! http://fuzzwork.enterprises/

It's been happening a lot more to me recently to. It's always happened a little bit, despite never happening on any other online game. But the other day for instance I was disconnected 10 times while mining within 1 hour... Two of which occurred while trying to log back into the game from another Socket was Closed.
But I guess this is another case of it being the players fault and not CCP's right? |

I'll add to the info I provided that I was actively playing at the time so all clients but one were played actively. The one account that wasn't actively being played was a booster alt and it disconnected about in the middle of the D/C spread.

here's a better idea:
1) download pingplotter. Freeware version is more than enough for this.
2) set target to TQ server. I forgot which one is it. can someone tell me the IP for it?
3) set sampling trace to unlimited. think 10sec trace delay is enough so that you don't cause more harm to the TQ server?
4) press "trace".
5) go play EVE. next time you get socket closed error, check hop where excessive ping or some packet loss starts to show up. piece of advice, if you're behind a router, maybe you might get 100% packet loss permanently on that hop, but that's ok. it's your router blocking tracert only.
