The general symptoms of slow database access are wallet not working, cans can't be looted, can't jump systems, and then tranquility falls over, like it did today.
What usually causes this exact kind of slow database access and fall over in my experience is some kind of deadlock which maxes the database CPU to 100% or a full table (such as the item ID table).
I know these two problems are something the server devs are looking at very closely.
Since no official information has been released yet, I can't be sure either of these assumptions is the situation today, however it seems possible.
Until announced that Tranquility is stable I recommend you do not login or attempt to undock.

SOE were (and probably still are) worse.
At customer service maybe. But thier network and software stability capability is second to none. In 7 years of EQ, i've only experienced about a half-dozen or so incidents where I was unable to connect and play, or play in a stable environment.
If you're comparing customer service quality, CCP has it hands down over SOE

To all people who feel this hiccups are insulting.. i got a good trick that work for me when i get to **** off.
Set a skill which will take you 1 week to finish and comeback later when you feel more suited to play and skip the server down.

To the new people - this is really rather rare. But unfortunately whingers on the forums aren't. Sorry.
I'm an admin for a pretty large DB which has the same connectivity requirements as the eve DB, ie 23/7 (well 23/6 in my case) and I can vouch for the complexity of such systems. The one I work on is bad enough, so god knows what a bespoke system such as this is like. It isn't as simple as throwing cash and hardware at it. In some instances that can be counter productive. Sounds odd, but it can be true.
I'm sure everyone at CCP who can help is working flat out at this. At the weekend. When their families are prolly ****ed off that they are spending another weekend at work. Lets hope that they can get it stable again soon.
Good luck guys.

Edited by: Achar Farwind on 05/08/2006 16:53:47 To all of you who complain about stability and threaten to quit over it... I would like to see you do better than CCP.
Call me a "fanboi" or whatever you will, I said the same on the Blizzard forums during WoW crashes. Maintaining a MMO, especially one supporting near 30,000 players on a single server, isn't the easiest thing in the world.

Originally by: Twinis I love EVE, and typically, comepared to some other MMOs I wont even begin to name, it has good stability, and typically helpful customer support and GMs. But with working our 4th day of continued outages, I'd like to know what the issue is, or truely though to be by someone employed by CCP. The hampster crap was amusing the first time, but it is not any more, nor is referring to it as a hiccup. It's getting rather annoying for me as a paying customer to have the problem continously and jokingly referred to as a hiccup or hampster problem. Either supply real information or admit you don't know outright. That's the service part of customer service, providing proper answers to proper issues not jokes cause they get less funny each time they are mentioned.

This was such a good post I thought I'd repeat it. Read it again, CCP.
Most of the time CCP does give a post-mortem of what has happened. Just look at Valar's posts with regards to the recent lack of ItemID's. It's just very tricky for them to post what they think is going on, before they find out what is actually going on; people on Eve forums take things literally and a unresearched comment by a dev will end up having pages of backlash if they are incorrect.
Not a fanboi, just someone who does fix computers, and knows that sometimes the first problem that arises isn't necessarily the problem itself.

No its just a silly subject given Serenity is physically all the way over in China using its own connectivity and aside from using similar software is completely separate and distinct from Tranquility ...
BUT are they having the same kind of prolems?? Lag and data base overloads?? Ramdom crashes? Or are you not allowed to say?

I wasn't backlashing, that was a very decent and polite request for more information. As a tech, I know the situation, and indeed feel for CCP, but as a paying customer, I also am entitled to answers. Which after my post, answers were given, and I am satisfied now that I have been provided with an idea of what they believe is going on. If you are a tech or in customer support role, you know that a little information can go a long way to customer satisfaction, but a lack therof can go further into dissatisfaction. Having been given information, I have an idea now of the severity of the problem and don't have to feel uninformed about hampsters and other stuff that has no bearing on the problem and is purely joking. :)

You'd have to ask them! We have no direct relationship with the forum mods or devs over in china. I have no idea what goes on there.
They are using slightly updated server code, code which I believe the devblogs are saying we're going to get in Kali. So ... I guess we'll see if it helps
