Is it just me or has the entire MMORPG genre died?
WoW is a glorified slot machine instance grind with no pvp. DaoC died a long time ago and the next expansion will finalize that. EQ/EQ2 are the most uninspiring and badly executed games on the market now. SWG was stillborn and then even the corpse desecrated. EVE has become an RMT combat game with no backstory development.
So what's left?
Can anyone think of any MMORPGs still out there that don't suck totally?

None died. All MMOs are plagued with almost same problems. ---------------- Cruelty is God's way of showing kindness.

Not an MMO, I know, but personally I am waiting for Supreme Commander to be released. It is the follow on to Total Annihilation (and more importantly, made by the same people).

Try Neverwinter Nights. It kicks ass and is a lot like a MMOG if you play a Persistent World.

Since two ppl above me recommended non-MMOs, I would recommend The Longest Journey and Dreamfall. I am more of a story based person. Cant stand shallow games. Something that is dying in most game developers. ---------------- Cruelty is God's way of showing kindness.

Shattered Galaxy is still fun even though they really haven't developed it in 3 or 4 years. MMORTSs for the win \o/
P.S. EVE is still just fine.

Not an MMO, but its the best adventure game of all time .
I can highly recommend it under Linux. And Windows. With all graphics options maxed.
P.S. For those downloading it under Ubuntu, the Ubuntu repository has an old version of the game, which is missing things like the intro sequence and is a bit buggy. Get the latest (0.5 something). Also make sure to get the uqm-music and uqm-voice packages: they're not included on the main repository due to their size. The README.Debian file has a link to the FTP server where these are stored.

I remember seeing screenshots of Huxley a while back, it looks amazing but will it be any good, reminds me alot of Enemy Teritory: Quake Wars but QW is not an mmo and Huxley is, very intersting.

Try Fallout and Fallout 2. They are RPGs but rumor has it that Fallout 3 will be an MMO. But those 2 games alone should keep you occupied for a few months. -----------------------------------------

I'm a fan of Rome: Total War, but as for an MMO, I can't really think of another good one that you hadn't listed.
Personally, all games have problems, and if you nitpick too much, you'll never actually have any fun with any of them.

Actually, SC is really a "spiritual successor" to Total Annihilation, due to legal issues (GPG doesn't have rights to the TA name).

Have to agree with this one. I'd like to see more evidence of the backstory in-game. CCP, please hire somebody to implement the storyline (what happened to all elections?)!
As for other MMOs. EVE is my first and it's taking far too much time to think about alternatives

There's backstory all the time... see the corp and alliance forums.
In many ways its IMO far too much to handle.
Emperors that we can't see getting shot by assassins we don't know isn't "backstory."

I might give that a go. I played Diablo 2 for about 5 years and loved it then eventually quit. How do you join the private servers anyway?

Edited by: spurious signal on 07/08/2006 15:59:04 Thanks for all the suggestions folks
The vast majority of the things suggested I've already played however Maybe I need to get out more... Don't wanna get into a discussion about why I think EVE is now broken and in terminal decline, that wasn't the point of this thread.
Checking out Second Life since it was the only MMO suggested.
And to the suggestion that all MMORPGs have serious flaws and that if I nit-pick too much I won't enjoy any of them.... I think you're right. I think it might actually be time for me to abandon this genre for a while... it's a shame, but I think my standards are too high and I'm not prepared to pay for mediocrity any more.
Thanks all

Well, I'd have to agree that if neither WoW nor EVE suit your tastes, you're best off looking at another game genre. Those two games represent, in my eyes, the best the current market has to offer in terms of MMORPGs.
By the by, last time I checked, "private" D2 servers are still illegal. Discussing illegal stuff on the forums is not a good idea if you value your account ^^. See rule #11.
Good to see there's going to be a (spiritual) sequel to TA. That game was a blast to play, and I have a sudden hankering to reinstall it.

i bought NWN and the two main expansion packs simply for the online play, but i can never do it because i know noone else that plays it. and i ONLY play games with people i know, never solo. because solo theyre generally zero fun.
as for a different MMO, you're stuffed. unless you fancy trying guild wars which again, is only good with friends. take up a different Genre, go download enemny territory. at least it has EXP.
im currently branching out. i used to play Knight Online religiously but it stopped being free (to an extent, free accounts arent allowed to play during primetime afaik). Tityana directed me to MU Online, a free Diablo II clone which im hoping is going to live up to the game its supposedly copied off. i played Diablo II LOD till 1.10 came out and anally destroyed it.

I agree that there's backstory all the time but it doesn't affect the bulk of the player community (afaik we've got >100k players and only 10-15k in alliances?). I'd like to see more backstory roleplay between factions for example. e.g. 1 week full-out war against the Caldari would be interesting where players could earn extra faction points or faction lp or something cool by killing caldari players and/or navy (without ccp gankage). heh, I'm rambling on about something which would be difficult to implement and that would probably destroy game-play for many. But that is the kind of conflict I envisaged when starting the game.
