I always knew that I disliked pvp but never knew how much till now. I was in .4 security zone, which I thought was fairly safe and got killed by gang of 10 players in about 5 seconds in a .4 zone by a jumpgate. I don't mind dying but the losing of all implants due to podding was overkill and too much. I never had a chance. I realized that even though I was insured and had a good clone, this will happen again and again, and I have no control over it. In fact, some Pvpers are realizing that all they need to do is declare war and its open season against anyone with a corporation, whether they want to particpate in pvp or not.
Accordingly, I have resigned from game. PvP games never last a long time, and this will be no exception unless CCP finds ways to avoid these problems. What will happen, which I have seen in countless Pvp games is that people will realize what this pirate group realized: you need to travel and kill in packs. This will happen and will result in the killing of many players who will eventually quit due to the high cost of replacement items. This will leave only othe Pvpers to kill each other. Eventually, the game dies.
Anyway, good bye all and good luck. I guess Everquest isn't that bad after all.I wonder what Everquest II will be like?

Edited by: Xelios on 09/10/2003 05:25:20 I dropped in on their little camp and concord wasn't even touching them. This is the problem here, not that they can do it (because they should be able to do it) but that concord isn't doing a damn thing about it. If concord sends waves of ships at them while they're doing it, and they can still pull it off, then hey more power to them.
And also, next time a quick check of the map would before you venture anywhere would save you from having to go through this.

Oh yes, for the person who mention ultima online, it is true that they have pvp for over 6 years, which I have participated in. HOWEVER, they have two separate facits: one with PvP and one without. The vast number of players are in the one without the PvP. UO probably wouldn't have survived if they didn't do this. There wouldn't have been enough interest.

UO was doing fine until they started to get mainstream attention, then they started attracting whiners like you. That's when they instituted the Trammel server, which is widely regarded as the WORST MISTAKE IN UO HISTORY.

Well if you can't handle light PvP and I do mean light then you right, this game is not for you.
No place is safe in this game. You have to stay awake at all times unless you are sitting in a station. If you are paying attention you won't die unless it is due to lag.
If this game did not have a PvP element in it it would be boring as hell. Its the PvP element that keeps the game from just being a sim. Nothing more exciting than carrying 30mill mega and having to run blockades, dodge pirates, etc. Things like this keep the game fresh and alive. Take that away and you might as well play simcity.

0.4 is teh safest. 0.4 is teh r0x0r. 0.4 has no active police presence and the forums have been frickin' full of discussion about people jamming/tanking the sentries.
Either read the forums instead of just whining here, or learn about the game.
I didn't go into 0.4 sec space for 2 weeks after I started. Why? Because 2 *hours* in I understood (I think ) the sec ratings. When I did, it was in an expendable ship and I was at maximum alert every damn second because of whineposts splattered neatly across the forums .
You know...I found out that as long as you're semi-awake...99.9999% of the time you will not have a problem in empire space. And that 0.0001% is very easy to escape if you're awake.
Quit trolling and whining. You had more than the opportunity to escape; it's entirely your fault it happened. Don't want it to happen again and do actually intend to play? Learn the sec ratings, police response times (yes, even if this means making an alt and popping at someone with it so you can see how fast the 'lice own your arse) and such things. _______________________________________________________________________

The crux of the problem is "I never had a chance". Most people who don't like PKing will at least tolerate it if they feel like they at least have a chance to react and decide to fighht or flee. Ships being destroyed in 5 seconds is not acceptable. Neither is players attacking others while they are loading and have no control of their ship.
PvP is one thing, PvLag is another. If CCP does not address this, this game is sure to die. |

You've got 10 seconds coming out of warp.
You can: Set autopilot to jump automatically if you know you will come out near enough to the gate to jump instantly.
CHECK LOCAL (And there are plenty of ways around the local bug, if you're that gutted you should have relogged if your local was bugged at the least).
Two very effective methods.
And afaik the invulnerability timer is 10 seconds . _______________________________________________________________________

Just to answer some critics:
1. I was a programmer at UO. If the two facits weren't started, it would have closed.
2. I did have the game on autopilot, which surprised me that it didnt' work
3. As to knowing about the .4 security problem, I was only playing for 3 weeks. 4. Admittedly, my loss is irrelevant. If 100 people quit because of this, CCP will get be alerted. If 2000 people quit, the game folds. plain and simple. I don't blame the pirates/pcs to take advantage of this. I don't blame me for thinking that autopilot avoids this problem. I blame the game for poor design. There is no excuse for being unable to do anything and for letting anyone camp a jumpgate CCP clearly afer some time limit should have police coming to the gate. This is just bad programming.
As to the person who said that no where is safe, you are right. thus, time to say bye.

I have a lot of sympathy for your view. It shoulkdnt be possible to destroy any ship in just 10 seconds. Thats not combat, thats just obliteration. I'm sick of people calling anyone who suggests the combat system is bugged and rubbish a carebear. Maybe if concord was properly programmed and behaved rationally this wouldnt happen.

Sirmorte, you have probably noticed by now that when you warp to a gate from different points you warp in at different distances from it. The same for stations.
You should also notice that different stations/gates have different contact spheres; one station may require you to be within 8 km for you to dock for example, another may require you to be within 13km.
Now then. 0.4 is on the low end of the security scale (1.0, 0.9, 0.8, 0.7, 0.6, 0.5, 0.4, 0.3, 0.2, 0.1. 0.0 doesn't have security period. So you should consider everything under halfway (0.5) dangerous. If you are in a system you know, and know you come in close enough to the gate to arrive with your current speed within 10 seconds and jump, you use ap. If not, that's what LOCAL is for. Everyone shows up in local (Well...did...but that's a different matter, and fixable). If there's anyone in local you should be cautious. If there's over 2 you should be worrying. I'm sorry, but it really is a learn-the-ropes and common sense issue. It's not that hard to find out if you just ask people. _______________________________________________________________________

I do not mind getting podded as I KNOW I should have checked the map. But TANK was sat in a Jump in point not at a Jump Gate. (Unless the Jump-in is at a Gate.. I didn't have time to tell) so no need to mess about with sentries etc.

my 2 cents:
I consider myself an accomplished gamer, i have been playing video games since asteroids on atari. Most games today suck IMO for the simple reason that there is no challenge. look at all the lauded console games: MGSII, FFX, GTA. Pick your poison these games were frikin easy.
The greatest part about eve is the fact that there is no mercy. none. Turtle is absolutly right. I'm a high risk equals high reward gamer. And eve delivers.
What the hell is the point if there exists some lame feature that protects people from pvp. Why ceate a fleet when you can just dissallow other corps from declaring war on you. Why create an armada when you can't invade anyone because everyone is afraid of losing their ship so you can't attack them.
If you are at all competent you have nothing to worry about from npc pirates, so where is the risk? Its like playing an FPS on GODMODE. How long does that entertain. Zero risk. Zero fun.

Edited by: Drethen Nerevitas on 09/10/2003 08:07:27 OMG. Xander you sound like me .
Eric: I was listing possibilities for a warp gate.
If entering a system that is potentially dangerous I: Check starmap for players in space. Set autopilot for a system past it, turn autopilot on as I go through the gate, it instantly warps you away from the jump in, giving you at least 5 seconds while warping to zoom out the cam, check local, pick a planet/star to warp to when you come out of warp should the gate also be blocked, etc.
There's plenty of ways to avoid jump-in camps.
Edit to avoid spamming: I know it wasn't a whine, I'm just saying there are plenty of ways to do things and giving an example.

The real problem is that people get caught by PvP'ers with expensive items. Non-PvP'ers, generally, kit their ships out with the best equipement, rare mods and implants.
PvP'ers like myself, fly only cheap ships with stock mods and no implants. Therefore we have hardly anything to lose. We "pack" together to cover our shortcomings as individuals and fight effectively as a unit.
I've said it countless times before and I'll bore everyone with this again: low sec space means the space is LOW SECURITY. Don't go there and not expect to be killed or attacked
Don't fly a ship you can't afford to lose.
Don't kit it with mods you can't afford to lose.
Don't use implants you can't afford to lose.
If you do follow these guidelines, you'll do yourself a big favour. -------------------------------------------- Dead

Drethen Nerevitas, you sound real hardass for someone who spends 99% of his time running, midspacecamping and insta-logging.
And Sc0rpion, you need to play UO or something, the reason the game is alive at all is got split up so griefers could grief eachother while the other 80-90% of the playerbase could still enjoy the game they wanted to.
It sounds strange, I know, customer satisfaction, go figure.
I cant wait for this game to go TRUE PvP.
PvP improvement suggestions
Maybe after those changes it will actually be worthwhile doing fleet combat, engaging in battleunit tactics, smaller shiploss pain, more PvP combat system.
After that is done, we could perhaps shrink the empire safezones and make that even more safe but making the other areas even more like 0.0 to allow pirates a life in EvE too.
Customer satisfaction once again OMG OMG TEH PWNZ

It would be a complete mining simulator! Guess you want that. Also, try checking map before you jump anywhere, it usually helps a lot.

This is not safe space people - its been camped at one point or another by Tank CEO for some time. Use your map - if there are a lot of people there they probably are not sitting in an Ice Cream van waiting for some small children to come along.
Misos advice was right (no I am not stalking u - though it was an interesting idea ) I also saw somewhere someone complaining on getting jumped by Biomass while mining in a low sec Empire system. Do these people not watch local?? If I saw several pirate corp ships appear in local and stay there I wouldn't assume thy have come to share some tea and biscuits.

Damn you don't read the boards? How much can you have seriously lost in 3 weeks? If you can make enough money for implants in 3 weeks of playing it means you have surely spend enough time and have enough knowledge of the game to be aware of these things.
Besides it also means you shouldn't take long to get it all back. And certainly shorter then it initially costed to acquire them.
3 weeks and you are still trying to run blockades? 3 weeks and you are still not watching local?
I say: Don't quit, join a corp, hopefully there they can learn you the things everybody should be aware of but you were either too lazy or stupid to pick up.
Though I have to admit PvP has quite some problems and the pirates are willing to use every loophole they can find until a slow and incompetent CCP closes them (and opening some more while at it) --- soonÖ |

Edited by: illuminati on 09/10/2003 12:07:24 Right on Drethen, I am ****ed because no matter how many hundred ships you throw into a system to kill someone, you cannot gain system superiority because they simply cannot be attacked unless they want to.
I can choose ANY region, any system to fly around in be it claimed or not and I could not be stopped, no matter how efficient the warmachine opposing me, that is rotten to the core.
The only people loosing big ships were either, surprised by someone with positive secrating ( secrating is 2 cm from being totally useless in current outfit), afk, having a CTD or entrypoint camped, aka greyzone 'sploiting.
Quote: Illuminati, if fleet loss didn't hurt, everyone would be running around in bships (They already do, but...). How the hell are they going to implement corp wars properly if each 10 person corp can afford to lose 3 10-ship fleets a day?
That is exactly my point but you're missing it by a few inches, hehe... Did you watch the EvE E3 trailer? How close to the ACTUAL EvE do you feel that was?
The only way of making corpwars happen now is by making killing easier in now super-safe 0.0 and by making shiploss less severe so people can fight more and engage in politics of wars without needing to spend 99% of uptime harvesting resources.
By making first-strike possible, you can actually incorporate tactics in wars, what are they using now? What do we need to counter it? Continual PvP unlike now, weeks of earning cash for seconds of combat in case it goes **** up.

Also, I do sincerely appologise for my brethren with more soul than manners, and you being an alt wasnt that totally unknown, hehe

Hmm. I'm not going to be really, really, really, really (really?) stupid and tell you how.
But there is a way to locate Scy and myself and kill us. It's actually fairly easy, and I've hinted at it in local a few times. Take an hour or so to mull over your modules. You should find what I'm talking about .
Never saw any trailer. Sorry . I admit Eve isn't what I expected, but that's OK too. Though admittedly, corp wars aren't going to become a thing of reality until you get player owned stations and mob refs. And then mining becomes a helluva lot easier. Miner IIs. Mobile refs. Player owned sentries (OMG nooo my fav gate... ).
Hey, if you ever get tired of the law, I could use a battleship in the group . Be inventive. Use your brain to solve your problems, not your fleet . Quit camping the gates and look at other ways to find and destroy intruders. It's possible.
OK...and on the flip side...I can't remember what I was on about now, so I'll shut up . _______________________________________________________________________

Aight den, I'll have to fit the "make the damn scanner work" module, train the "kill the 10 sec PvP-killing invul haxx" to level 3 at least. Maybe I'll have a talk to the art director about a Nieblung cloaker or something too.
The trailer is pretty cool, check it out here.
I agree that the game will take off more with stations, refineries and such but there will still be this issue with game mechanics hindering of gathering a team up and going for a kill.
Except for attacking structures that is but if you thought loosing a Scorpion was tough, try loosing a damn station for úbling-bling$ isk.
Also, thanks for the offer but I'm more of the shotgun-carebear than a shotgun-thug.

Seems our pirate friends have perfected the technique of jamming the sentry guns at gates. I would imagine it goes something like this:
1. Pick a gate in low sec space (anything below 0.5 is good because Concord won't warp in and waste you) with a reasonably long warp in to jump distance.
2. The sentry guns are I believe tech 3 level and consulting eve-db reveales you can jam these with 14 points across the board.
Name Caldari Sentry Gun III Group Sentry Gun Race Caldari Description Sentry guns are placed around important space facilities and will attack anyone threatening the place they've been assigned to defend. Sentry guns are very powerful compared to their ease of purchase and deployment. Base Price 0 Volume 1000 m3 Capacity 1000 Activation Cost 0 Energy hp 7200 Rate of fire 1.75000 Optimal Range 75000 m Recharge time 500 s Damage Modifier 3.5 EM Damage 16 hp Explosive Damage 16 hp Kinetic Damage 28 hp Thermal Damage 28 hp Activation Proximity 20000 m Primary Skill required Chief Tactical Officer Max Locked Targets 8 Max AttackTargets 1 RADAR Strength 14 points LADAR Strength 14 points Magnetometric Strength 14 points Gravimetric Sensor Strength 14 points gfxTurretID 366 Shield HP 4800 hp shieldCharge 0 Armor 7200 hp armorDamage 0 Armor Em Damage Resistance 60% Armor Explosive Damage Resistance 9% Armor Kinetic Damage Resistance 25% Armor Thermal Damage Resistance 35% Shield Explosive Damage Resistance 60% Shield Kinetic Damage Resistance 40% Shield Thermal Damage Resistance 19% Shield Recharge Time 500.00s Capacitor Capacity 1000 shieldUniformity 0.75 structureUniformity 0.75
3. You outfit 2 Blackbirds with say 1x Spatial, 1x Ion, 1 x White Noise, 1 x Phase and 1x multispectral with all the lower slots padded out with flux coils to keep your cap up. This would give you 16 points across the board so easily enough to jam a sentry gun. All you need is someone with enough skills to keep the gun jammed indefinately. You would probably mount a sensor booster in the last slot (reason revealed in point 4 below).
4. If one BB starts to jam the sentry gun within 55km (100km to be safe) then the other sentry gun will open fire and kill the jamming ship. So my guess is that both the jamming Blackbirds move out to over 100km away from the sentry guns and turn on sensor boosters to increase their targetting range. They then target a sentry gun each and effectively jam both sentry guns with impunity from over 100km away.
5. Everyone else sits and waits for any unsuspecting ship that happens to wander into the spiders web.
Am I close? If I am then apart from it being evil I think its pretty clever. Takes coordination and planning
Regards
Beaz

Drethen...Can you explain how you turn autopilot on while you're in a jump in order to warp away from the gate?
Thanks. |
