hello! I am fairly new to eve (1-2 weeks) and i'm trying to get into mining to make some money. Currently i'm afk mining kernite for the most part in a venture but i want to know what i should aim for based on my playstyle. I'm currently training to be able to use better ORE ships like the procurer but it will be a few days before ive finished the skills.
Anyways, I would really like to be able to mine and not have to really do much for about 30 minute periods atleast. I will still be at the game in case i get ganked or anything But it would ideal that I would be able to not have to interact for roughly 30 minute periods. (other than changing asteroids - of course) With my current set up im filling my hold in about 5-10 minutes which is awesome but its requiring a lot of back and forth from me. Thanks! |

I will eagerly await your tear filled post when you get ganked playing that way. Here's some advice.
1: AFK mining is simply asking to get ganked. If you're in highsec, CODE. or someone like them will find you and blow up your ship. If you're in lowsec or null, then being AFK is not paying attention to local, and will end in the same result.
2: It was a monumentally bad decision to post on forums that you AFK mine. I can pretty much guarantee you have been watchlisted by at least 10 people, who will seek you out to gank you.
3: Before you settle for mining as a profession, go join a PvP corp and learn the basics of PvP. Even iff you find PvP not to your ltaste in game play, knowing how the mechanics work will only help as you progress through EvE.
4: Playing the game in the manner which you state you want to play is probably the worst way for a new player to be. Not only does it teach a play style contrary to the core tenets of EvE, but it is the easiest way for new players to become bored with the game, and unsub. After all, do you really need to spend $15/mo to occasionally target a different spinning rock and press f1 while you watch television?
EvE is hard. It's harder if you're stupid.

Hello, as a fellow industrialist, I shall help you to the best of my ability.
First, it is not wise to advertise that you AFK mine. I think, however, semi-AFK mining (using in game browser, looking at the market, watching tv, or gaming on the console with your computer easily accessible) is perfectly acceptable.
Another bit of advice; if you don't wish to make mining/industry your full career, do not train into Exhumers.
As far as a fitting, if you feel safe in a Retriever, fit it with Reinforced Bulkheads and a Damage Control Unit and some shield hardeners (preferably thermal & kinetic). This tank will help deter gankers. The Retriever's ore hold is rather large so you can stay in a belt for a while, but if you really want a tanky mining ship, use a procurer with a similar setup.
Also, it is good to join a newbie friendly mining/industry corp that will help you get on your feet.
Now, expect to hear from an organization of screwheads that call themselves "CODE", refer to my signature on that but if you want more information on their atrocities, check out their blog, www.minerbumping.com. It has a lot of good information on how to be a smart miner. (No permit required.)
If you have any further questions, send me an evemail and I will send you some info as well.
Fly dangerously, fly safe! o7
CODE is just a bunch of pirates; smart, organized pirates. It doesn't help to rage at them because that is exactly what they want. Dust yourself off and get back on your feet, you don't even have to talk to them.

Screwhead checking in. Bravo to you Mr. Tesla for actually giving sound fitting advice and not mentioning a mining laser upgrade.
As for semi afk being acceptable I must respectfully disagree if this was referring to any un docked activity.

You may indeed do all these things while playing EvE. However, if you do watch television or play console games, or pretty much anything that takes your attention away from the game while undocked, do not be surprised when your attention is drawn back to the screen by the sound of your ship exploding, or the solid white screen of your pod being killed.
You have been warned.

Hello Kaisuko
I am glad you ask this question. You see, mining in Highsec is under the jurisdiction of the New Order of Highsec, of which the CODE. alliance is a part of. We patrol the area and enforce the New Halaima Code of Conduct, the law of Highsec also known as the Code.
The Code is a set of just rules to regulate the mining in Highsec and to keep the game-destroying bot-aspirant AFK miners and bots out of business. As a genuine miner the Code is your best friend and the one most important document that will guide you trough your daily life.
I am looking forward to welcome you into our New Order family and productive member of our new civilization in Highsec. Our Agents stand by to receive your permit request. the Code ALWAYS wins |

Semi-AFK mining should be acceptable from a cost/benefit POV until CODE's in-game ganking catches up to its forum rhetoric on the subject.
BTW, that is not a shot at CODE as I think your cause is just. I just think you're short manpower to actually have miners adjust their behavior after doing a cost/benefit analysis on ths risk of being ganked. |

I find this to be an optimal set up for mining.
With all your barges equipped in this manner.
If you are unable to equip yourself so magnificently, I would simply suggest that you do not treat mining as an AFK activity. Use chunkier barges like the Skiff or Procurer if you must "AFK", but know that no amount of tank will dissuade a group of people as relentless as those-who-should-not-be-named. |

Quote: 2. Be respectful toward others at all times.
The purpose of the EVE Online forums is to provide a platform for exchange of ideas, and a venue for the discussion of EVE Online. Occasionally there will be conflicts that arise when people voice opinions. Forum users are expected to be courteous when disagreeing with others.
4. Personal attacks are prohibited.
Commonly known as flaming, personal attacks are posts that are designed to personally berate or insult another forum user. Posts of this nature are not conductive to the community spirit that CCP promotes. As such, this kind of behavior will not be tolerated.
5. Trolling is prohibited.
Trolling is a defined as a post that is deliberately designed for the purpose of angering and insulting other players in an attempt to incite retaliation or an emotional response. Posts of this nature are disruptive, often abusive, and do not contribute to the sense of community that CCP promote.
19. New player bashing will not be tolerated.
New members of the EVE Online community are encouraged to use, but are not restricted to the EVE New Citizens Q&A forum. This forum is specifically designed to provide a platform for those who are new to the EVE community to ask questions and learn more about EVE. More experienced forum users are encouraged to participate by assisting new players with helpful and courteous responses. All flaming, trolling and posts of a derogatory nature will be deleted, and will be considered a severe breach of the forum rules.
23. Post constructively.
Negative feedback can be very useful to further improve EVE Online provided that it is presented in a civil and factual manner. All users are encouraged to honestly express their feelings regarding EVE Online and how it can be improved. Posts that are non-constructive, insulting or in breach of the rules will be deleted regardless of how valid the ideas behind them may be. Users are also reminded that posting with a lack of content also constitutes non-constructive posting.
27. Off-topic posting is prohibited.
Off-topic posting is permitted within reason, as sometimes a single comment may color or lighten the tone of discussion. However, excessive posting of off-topic remarks in an attempt to derail a thread may result in the thread being locked, or a forum warning being issued to the off-topic poster.
Thread cleaned up as per the above rules, and moved to New Citizens Q&A.
Remember that forum rules are enforced more strongly in NC Q&A, and stuff that may be borderline allowed elsewhere will just be removed here. Please be respectful and constructive or don't post.
Additionally, a reminder: similar to how recruitment advertisement is prohibited in NC Q&A, advertising other player services or organizations (especially for-ISK ones) is also not allowed. Posts doing so have been removed.
