I named my Cyclone Toothless Shark and my Tempest Sailfish.
Not sure why but some of the Minmatar ships look like marine life to me.

I pride myself on fun names. My current ships are 'Break Even' and 'High Tide'. I have a short list of names I plan to use, such as 'Unabashed Diction'. I won't divulge the rest for fear of copyright infringement.

Kewl to see all the different names and why.
Here's is something to think about. Once, a while back before NPC trade goods got nerfed (fixed?!?) I saw this hoarder flying through space that was called "Garbage Scow". Now I got to thinking that was a cool name, he must be hauling garbage. Sure enough when I looked up garbage on that garbage was being sold and bought by NPC's in my local region. Well I got out my trusty mammoth and placed buy orders for garbage around the place etc and in a few short weeks had dominated the market in my area and was raking in more money than I had seen in Eve up to that point. I wondered whether the poor, "out-of-the-business" Garbage Scow's pilot ever realized what the sad chain of events was. Needless to say I never named my hauler for what it was hauling... and yes, from the times I saw him around and the stations he was visitting he was actually hauling garbage.
Moving on. I name my ships for a variety of reasons. Some because of what they look like: Catalyst: SS Socialist - because it looks like a left wing... Rupture: Glue Gun II - it looks like a hot melt craft glue gun.. and II because another player in my corp named theirs Glue Gun. We all called them Glue Guns :)
Other because of what they are or do: Reaper: Fragile - because it is Mammoth: Hauler - because that is what it does Mammoth: SS Isendeldik - I own several mammoths for different uses. I know that my corp mines in Insen so that Mammoth has cans in the hold to take max ore. Also, I know where I am supposed to leave it when I have finished with it.
Others for quirky reasons:
Daredevil: DeeDee - well hmmm Rifter: Poppy - because it tackles and pops well. Ratting Cruiser: Bait - because when ratting in low sec I become a target for pirates. Anything that makes them paranoid is to my advantage. Even though 'bait' is obvious it means that they will gather a few mates together and local gets busy before they come to visit me. I see the business and jump away after peacefully finishing off the current rat and collecting it's loot. :).
Other names: Duck Lunch: Based on a word game where "Dark" become "Duck" and "love" becomes "Lunch" So my hunting raven is called Dark Love because that is what it brings you. "Dark Love" becomes "Duck Lunch" in the word game. Names to be used in the future include Duck Angel, Lost Lunch, Deep Duckness, Universal Lunch, Lunch of duckness...
Looney, Mad, Idiot: Good names for a raven Feral: Name for ships in a corp game. Firey: Firefly

I always name my ships, although being new I have yet to figure out the "snakey" ways to name ships to hide one-self or twist a game emchinc or such.
Being new, I only have a small number of Ships:\
My "Fighter", a Punisher Frigate, is the C.O.C. Warfish
My Hauler is the C.O.C. Orefish
And my Miner is the C.O.C. Orefinder
Yea, kinda silly RP (C.O.C. stands for Cononach Ore Corporation, a future Corp for myself and my brother), but since there is seemingly so little customization allowed (beyond gear sets) I felt a little silly RP was okay.

Originally by: Damien Smith I name my ships with someone elses name who's in local if I'm hunting. For example if I see a pilot a couple of months old called Bob I might name my ship 'Bob's Taranis'.
That's the way to go if you're doing solo pvp. There's nothing more irritating if you're scanning down a Brutix in a belt with the name "Noob XY's Brutix" and you look up the name on local... "Ah, 3 weeks old' brutix, lets go" - and get into the belt to realise, its a 2 years old PvPer who tricked and will wtfpwnbbqs you. ______________________ o rly? |

I always name my ships, don't want to help anyone scanning for me. Ferox is always "Thunderchild", Prophecy is "Bird of prey", my Helios will have a miriad of names, mostly other shiptypes. I used the "Asteroid (Veldspar)" thing but no one falls for that one anymore. Haulers are just a number most of the time like "Hauler IV". My Maller is called "The Rock".

I have serious names on *almost* all of mine, although my looting navitas was FishFace for a while.
Except shuttles, I ignore them.
Retribution - Tiburon, just reminds me of a shark for some reason. Arbitrator - Judicator Prophecy - Invisible Truth (fits the whole mystic theme, and face it, who doesn't love the Com Guards?) Badger - Star Conveyor Bestower - Prime Mover (hey look, more battletech!)
I also pull a lot from the Homeworld universe. My two retrievers are the Faal-Corum and Spirit of Somtaaw, and if I ever get a covetor it's going to be the Kuun-Lan. Now I just need a siege cannon.
My Thorax is the Sajuuk-Cor, because of the storyline behind the Taiidani Ion Frigates, which would just charge right into the fray, blasting the whole time, same thing a blasterboat does.
And the first HAC I get is going to be the Qwaar-Jet
I also helped name my corpmantes Scorpion. Knowing how long they last in fleet battles, and how poor they are for PVE (the two things he's going to use it for) I told him to name it Suicidal Tendencies. ---------- My sig is boring. |

Being one of them low-life roleplayer types (though I don't mind twinking a game any more than the next being), I like to give my ships names that help me 'feel' the game, but I only apply that to my active ships. Anything thats mothballed gets given a serial number or other simple ID (Shuttle I-7 for example).
Currently my two main ships are called:
'The Ardent Celeste' & 'The Kings Fiddle'
Always was a fan of good old fashioned sailing vessels!

Edited by: Sakari Richards on 21/08/2006 21:03:44 Yes, I love to name my ships, although my poor Rifter is as of yet unnamed Usually I pick a name based on the appearance of the ship, although on occasion I'll go with a different name (usually the name of a ship from some sci-fi thing). I've grown quite found of my Rifter, even though I've only had it for about two days. Hmm... now what would be a good name for it?
Anyways, back on my old (old is a relative term here, and she's now recreated) Gallentian, I had a Navitas named Serenity (from the movie of the same name). Although I'm now thinking Fish Ship would be a more apt name for a Navitas
Ah, I almost forgot. I like some of the ideas here, such as keeping the same name on a ship that has been destroyed, but tacking on generation numbers, and showing in the bio what s/he has piloted and what happened to them. ---- Hatred is learned, not inherited. I rename my ships. Like others have stated, it's a good idea, especially in PvP. I try not to use names that will not draw attention to myself. Newb story: My husband asked me what I wanted to name my first ship. I thought PWNY Express was funny. He said that was like yelling to the pirates "Pod me first." So I changed my mind...pirates have no sense of humor

When I was in the Navy, I saw an instructional video about a fire aboard the USS Forestal (aka Forest Fire). In the video, the wheels of a plane catch fire. The wheels of the plane are made of magnesium, and apparently a magnesium fire can not be extinguished. This video inspired the name of my toon, and then my ships have names based on fire. Frigates are small fires (e.g. Spark) and BS's are big fires (e.g. Inferno). I also throw in the elemental symbol for magnesium (used like USS), and then number them.
For example, a Vigil would be called - Mg Spark III.
For industrials, they get something related to a big fat, slow animal. My Mammoth (a good name already), I call Space Cow.
