Do you give your Ships names, or are they so much commonware that there is no love for them ?

Yes, I name my ships. Depending on situation, they might have some useful information, or not.
Leaving the factory name "someone"'s "ship-type" is of too much intel to anyone in the system, not counting the gang that I am in whom know what I am flying. -- V.H. |

I do and sometimes I name it by function - I have a Badger called hauler or once I called a ship target but that was just asking for trouble A truly wise man never plays leapfrog with a Unicorn. |

Edited by: Asha''Lil on 16/08/2006 10:23:33 Always I rename every thing I fly
"Minmatar Shuttle"
ItÆs a good way to hide my name and what IÆm flying when some one uses there scanner... I've found that most people well pass me by if IÆm not looking for a fight, they donÆt even think I'm me! I look like an empty floating hunk of junk in .0 space!
On the other hand if IÆm looking for a fight IÆll rename It to "Asha'LilÆs Retriever" that always attracts attention in .4 or lower. Boo, I really want to kill you! Stay still darn it! |

I've seen someone leave a ship in a safespot named 'Asteroid (Veldspar)'...
Personally I name my ships to reflect their roles or predecessors, like my Caracal is named 'Never Fly Jetlagged'. You can guess what happened to the previous one...

I always rename my ship too...
All industrials go under the name 'Paranormal Activity' and shuttles under 'Discovery' :)
Aw, mining barges carry the name 'Lord of the Roids' :D
Other are named randomly, currently have Armageddon 'The Arockalypse', Prophecy 'Angel of Darkness', Retribution 'Liberty' and Arbitrator 'Avatar'...

I name my warships after Japanese weapons. Battleships are Katanas, Cruisers are Wakazashis and Frigates are Shurikens. At the moment its the only Customization I'm allowed to make them mine.

I usually rename my ships because it's a definite trademark that it's mine Heh I'm proud of every ship that I have regardless of its strength or what not. After all, how could you not love something you worked hours for just so you could buy it? Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam

Didn't they teach ya at the academy? Its bad luck to fly an un-named ship.
Usually, I name my Frigates after old female names, IE, Irine, Elvira, etc.
Cruisers get fairly random names, for example, my Thorax cruisers are named "Bad Investments"
Battleships so far have been Fast-Food themed (Monster Thickburger for example)
I also keep the same name (usually) for my ships, even if they are destroyed. For example, my Current thorax is "Bad Investments VI"

I name my ships with someone elses name who's in local if I'm hunting. For example if I see a pilot a couple of months old called Bob I might name my ship 'Bob's Taranis'.
If it's a gang op then we all follow the usual naming scheme, to make scanning easier. It's a pain in the arse to warp about seeing what's there and saying "right, we've got a geddon at <insert name> stargate and a thron at <insert name> station" and hearing from corpmates "the thron's me, i'm omw" "the geddon's me, I'm just grabbing ammo".
That's shortly followed by expletives and telling them to get their ******* tags on their ships so I don't waste time scanning down a corpmate.
God that annoys me so much...

I once saw a very clever use of the naming. A person had a TECH II Navy Carcal. He named it the TECH I level name and unless you did a info search would never know. I thought it was clever.

I definitely name my ships. I tend to use "in character" thoughts rather than metagame thoughts, so they have real names and not attempts to game the system. :)
So far I have used names suggested by the ships' appearance (an incursus named Narwhal for example) or something that was going on at the time I named it. I had just mentioned that I had to go back to deadspace on a mission because I forgot to "blow the pirates' house down" so my new ship became Bad Wolf. ----- The price of freedom is eternal vigilance. |

I never thought of the metagaming ship names... Cool idea.
I name mine all the time. It is the only customization allowed after all:
Currently running:
1) Sex Panther VII (I go through a lot of Incursus's...) 2) Lady of Pain

Yes I name mine and for combatant vessels I try to use historical ship names for the class - for example my DDs are all given Tribal names (eg Zulu) Frigates have been Black Swan, etc. Right now I have the Ashanti.
Freighters I get more free form with. My primary hauler was Richard M Nixon III, a left over from the name I chose for my ship in some very very old Atari 800XL console game in the early 80s.
I also keep a history of the Captain in his Bio which lists all the ships he Captained and their fates (mothballed, destroyed and if by whom where etc).

Nice ideea about those floating debris names i must admit :), for my kessies i use canned food names aka brocoli and beans or something thats on the market in my country :) , for the cruiser i used Die-Anna or Max-Damage (carmaggeddon I big fan here), meh ferox is still called The Pacifier dont really know how i got the inspiration for it :) , and my shiny raven is called The End, :D... aw i almost forgot my first ibis of doom is called "The Toiler" and i think its one of the best fitted for it by far (aquanox inspired).

I haven't done this yet but I've thought about naming my ships as something commonly found in the system. AKA veldspar, or something of the likes.
Also some people like to rename ships and sell them on escrow. And no I haven't scammed anyone.
Atleast not yet anyways. RL "My front door is Gate Camped" |

I prefer to fly tackle frigs, T1 or Inty's, or EW Cruisers... Resulting names usually include something pessimistic such as Dead Again, Suicide King, The Hanged Man, and similiar arch types. I expect most of them to die rather quickly.
Alternatively entire gangs and ops camping gates have been renamed Concord in appropriate areas.

I'm going name my Retribution assualt frigate CNS Defiant after the USS Defiant from Deep Space Nine, since the Defiant class ships are basically assualt frigates, relatively little ships that hurt like hell.
CNS stands for Caldari Navy Ship... I rolled caldari but then decided I wanted to use lazers =/.
