I have been thinking of becoming a carrier pilot (Thanatos) but the only uses i have seen carriers being used for is PVP and Ratting in rented nullsec space. Other than those, what are the uses for a carrier? |

Note, this does not strictly require a carrier.

Carriers are fleet (support) ships. Using them solo usually ends with hilarious killmails. |

If you're going to fly a professional carrier, ALWAYS fly with an escort. Even in Highsec, someone will come along and poke your ribs.
Be sure you are secure enough to see the funny side of such events haha x

If you can get some support (or a trusted friend who can light a cynosaural field) then you can use a carrier as "pick-up truck" for moving your ships and some assortment of mods/ammo.
Outside of that, it is...
- a fleet support ship (see: force multiplier) - ratting ship (though, there are other ships that are cheaper and can largely do the same thing) - a big, expensive target.
Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective.

Carriers are great to move your fitted ships around.
If you are a POS owner, you could also keep a triage carrier around to repair your POS, but chances are good that attackers will blow you up when you go into triage. Triage carrriers are great for repairing themselves or something else, but their tank will eventually break (for example if under capacitor warfare pressure) and they do not have any offensive capabilities when in triage.
Apart from that there is no reason to have a carrier solo. In combat they only perform well in groups. |

a lame use of a carrier in 0.0 is putting it on a pos shield edge and assigning fighters to another ship for omgwtfbbq dps. but one should be careful with this kind of fun, the carrier could quickly become target for a hotdrop, has to be able to quickly re-enter pos forcefield. |

What is this, 2009 (prior to the fighter nerf)?
Someone hasn't been to null lately, using assigned fighters sucks compared to having the carrier on grid where the fighters actually get bonuses from the carrier (unless you use a ship with mutiple target painters, but the you still have the tracking issues and the fighters need to move and orbit). Unbonused fighters (which is what assigned fighters are) suck against anything that isn't a battleship. If you are ratting in a BS, regular heavy drones (or mixed Gecko flights, in angel space 2 geckos, 2 Valkyries and a warrior is magic) are much much better.

The problem with this is, of course, the same problem owners of pickup trucks have in real life. Once you have one, everyone else wants your help moving.

They were putting that carrier out of it's misery. A carrier which has been reduced to mining is obviously well past its prime. It is possible that its docking bays are damanged in some fashion that only allowed mining drones - or perhaps a critical software patch in the lauch command system had not been done. Whatever the case, it is obvious that this once proud warrior had seen better days.
Sleep well, old one. You shall be missed.
