Well I have read a couple of the "How to be a Pirate" threads but my question is this. If I am going to become a Pirate how can I stop myself being Killed/Podded/Ganked as soon as I enter 0.4 space, is it best to mine in a safe spot and sell the ore to build ISK whilst I am training my skills. Any help will be gratefully listened to and blown to S hit when I become a fully fledged Carribean Whajamacallit.

My advice, get yourself into a nice T1 frig like a tristan, or executioner, or rifter, or merlin and just play arround with webber/scrambler setups. Then just go in there and have fun.
Yeah you will lose ships and most likely your pod once or twice. But just make sure you have an up to date clone and you should be fine.
Start an alt that can run missions and mine. use that alt to fund your pirate main. You dont need a second account to do this, but some people get one becuase they can then train both characters at the same time.

Just go do it is the best advise. SP and expensive ships mean nothing if you can't fly properly so start by getting a few cheap frigates and going into lowsec and attacking things. ofc you'll die but it's good experience.
Pick a base with a nice agent you can use to earn isk and some lowsec nearby to practice in. -----

Ok So as I said I have read the "How to be a Pirate" stuff but I am hoping that some experienced Pirates can give me some advice as to what skill would be really helpful to train.

You can go pirating effectively with under 5 days of skills under your belt.
Rifter is probably the best choice, so get yourself skills for ACs, nos, minmatar frigs, ABs, webs/scrams and a simple armor tank.
You're good to go.

Closer to 18 hours assuming you made you character with the right starting skills ;)

I said 5 days simply because that is where my experience started (with my alt)

I got my first kills when this character was 14 hours old, with almost exactly 100k skillpoints. Maulus and merlin at once, and yes, they fought back. And then I just went on an indiscriminate murderous rampage.
Skillpoints have damn near nothing to do with being a low-sec pirate (of course they help, don't get me wrong), it's all in knowing what the hell you're doing. You can die just as easily with 100k skillpoints as you can with 30 million if you're being stupid, way too much emphasis is put on skillpoints in my opinion. At the bare minimum we super low skillpoint types can act as tacklers for people who can deal the damage (and catching the pod, of course)

Heh, I had those, except it was "after just one week" and my reponse was more along the lines of "I'm just misunderstood"

A few rules you should follow to be an efective pirate.
1. Never pod people, even if they sort of deserve it for being a ****. You dont need the huge security hit that early on, you probably will not want to be restricted to low sec or non empire too early on.
2. Your after loot, not kills. Ignore everyone that does not have a high possibility of droping something worth selling. You'll actually make much more ransoming cargo holds full of minerals than you ever will actually blowing someone up. I mean why take the security hit for attacking a mining frigate when you probably will not end up with anything.
3. Group with a few people, everyone should use cheap frigates so that losses do not cost alot of ISK. Give someone a cargo scanner and have him scan people with a passive targeter (so they dont get cautious) in nearby systems. Your main concern should be ISK so ****ing off the least amount of people while ransoming people with alot of high value cargo is the best course of action. That one person can call out high value targets and you can concentrate your attacks only on what will give you a decent ammount of isk.

I taught deathforge everything he knows
Suffice to say you can do quite a lot with very little in the way of skillpoints if you know what you're doing. I have over 350 killmails with an alt of mine with just under 300k sp. And most of those mails are from older (4 months+) characters.
Because I said so...

Murder one's school of non-consensual PVP FTW
Once you have some experience with pvp and the do's and don'ts and become familiar with different ships and their capabilities, it boils down to how well you know your target and how to exploit their weaknesses and evade their srengths. Of course sometimes you just need to bum-rush them in a belt and hope they're too flustered to fight back for a minute, letting you do enough damage that by the time they do start to fight back it's too late.
Knowing what you're doing with the ship you CAN fly and the mods you CAN use (and your own limitations) is what wins fights, not avoiding pvp because you only have x skillpoints.
Skills are for noobs

Blimey all I did was go home for the night unable to play and this thread has gone mad. What is the lowest sec I can go in to start my pirating?
Is being an ore thief in higher sec pirating?
And
What is the chance of me entering low sec and not getting snotted everytime?
Also is there a thread anywhere that explains what you can and can't do in each different sec lvl.

Stealing ore is indeed being a 'pirate'. At least that's what the carebears will call you. I personally refer to ore thieves as mineral liberation experts. Hehe
In 1.0 to .5, you can't shoot someone unless they're flagged to you by either you stealing from their can, and then they shoot at you, or they steal from your can. Otherwise you'll be concorded. In .4 to .1 you can shoot at people in belts without worrying about concord, but if you engage people at gates/stations, the sentry guns will shoot you.
In 0.0, you can shoot anyone any time any where. And no sec loss.
Because I said so...
