Because it takes up a hour of tv time and money that could of been spent on making/showing something better!

It's not going to be fun seeing another Sci-Fi show stop but at least we still have atlantis.
and yeah Atlantis is not a good as SG1, but then SG1 really got going after S3. We are still in the built up phase of it.

... but won't be. Instead it'll be spent showing something far worse for 1 or 2 seasons before that gets cancelled as well.
Networks would sooner cancel the good niche shows and replace them with garbage that appeals to the majority of viewers. Normally this might be good, but the majority of viewers (especially in the US) are entertained by no talent hack shows like American Idol or Survivor. Ratings used to be important back when there were 20 channels max and they all had to fight over limited air time, but now we have hundreds of channels. There's no reason the niche shows like Stargate should be axed because their ratings don't hold up against the majority of reality show garbage.
So yes, that space could be used for a better show, but it won't be. I can just about guarantee that whatever new show replaces SG1 will be a) crap and b) won't last more than a season or two.
Anyway, the producers said SG1 will go on in some form. Maybe on a different channel, maybe in a new movie.

Don't worry Kessah, lets hope StarTrek XI will rejuvinate the franchise somehow!
I will say this, I don't feel as ripped off as I did when FarScape was cancelled...
SG-1 had a good run and will in the long run be looked on more fondly for going when it was time. Now Firefly thats a different story, imo the biggest scandal in sci-fi since the original ST was cancelled
Why was firefly canceled? I really liked River.. uh I mean, Firefly. The movie pwnd too! I still don't know why they canceled it.
For the same reason the same channel cancelled Futurama and Family Guy.

Oh, and this, from wikipedia:
On August 21, 2006, the Sci Fi Channel confirmed that Stargate SG-1 has been canceled after ten seasons.[3] However, Executive producer Robert C. Cooper told GateWorld that they are hard at work looking for a new outlet for the story to continue.
"As far as the future, I can't comment yet because nothing has been confirmed," Cooper said. "What we want to emphasize is that the franchise is not dying. SG-1 will go on in some way. We're just not ready to announce how." Cooper also emphasizes that, though emotions are running high among Stargate fans who have just learned the news, it is important to keep the show's ratings strong throughout the remainder of its run on SciFi. "What's most important is that fans don't take out their frustration with SciFi by not watching," he said. "In fact, what they need to do is watch both SG-1 and Atlantis LIVE and make sure the ratings stay strong. That helps prove to other outlets that might be interested in SG-1 that the show is still as strong as we think it is."[4]
Mark Stern, executive VP of original programming for the Sci Fi Channel stated that the cancellation "was not a ratings-based decision", adding that the production staff have been given enough time to tie up all the loose ends and to create a good ending for the show. Stern has also said that SciFi plans to use some SG-1 members on the still-continuing spin-off Stargate Atlantis. [5]
On the other hand, there is an apparent conflict with the term "cancellation" as applied by Sci Fi Channel, which only orders SG-1 episodes from MGM/Sony; they have merely cancelled their order for new episodes. MGM/Sony, the rights holder, has expressed a desire to continue SG-1 through another outlet, suggesting that another network may pick up the series. This means that the series is not actually cancelled, but simply on hold until another buyer can be found for it. ----------

Gotta say the 200th episode was great, the younger versions of SG1 were spot on "Yo Wonderbread, you got that address figgurd out yet?" "Chill T, I'm like, translating as fast as I can!"
I like SG1 because it doesn't take itself seriously, it's gone down in quality since Browder joined but I can't really blame him, Richard Dean Anderson left some big shoes to fill. SGA isn't all that great, I watch it now and then just for the McKay banter which I find hilarious. I just can't stand the wraith, worst bad guys ever...
Not much sci fi left to choose from these days...

It will not survive on network TV, that's for sure...
Reality TV shows have killed the ratings for so many genre's...
Sci-Fi needs a new media other than network & cable TV to spread it's story goodness. Not sure the net is the place though, as there is too much piracy... ------------------------------------------------ Current Hobby other than EVE

I jsut hate sitting ehre watch as one by one the sci fi shows die out and channels stop shpwing repeats
Its a shame too there were/are some very good recent sci fi, BSG and Firefly
ANd with stargate gone there goes another of the stalwarts of Sci Fi

sad to see a good franchise starting to fall... thank god for BSG and it's winning a Peabody Award... first sci-fi show to ever do that. NBC (the parent company for Sci-fi) won;t cancel it's biggest cable audience like BSG has and they already have a prequel series in development called Caprica which will show what leads up to the BSG miniseries.
We'll find that SG:A will be like DS9 for the trek fans. It will develop into a better show like SG1 did and will spawn probably one more spin-off before the franchise is put to rest... hell maybe we will be lucky and get another SG movie before it all ends.

I don't like SG-1 stopping. It was miraculously keeping up it's rather high level for quite a lot of time... I'll probably be watching the entire series again some time. The Aurai made it pretty interesting, and with the 2 new chars, it was even better... It just stayed pretty good.
I can understand the underlying thought though - quit while you're ahead. Maybe they're the first broadcasting company to not milk the same thing over and over...
Stargate Atlantis was actually getting my preference over SG-1 lately. It had something even 'fresher' in some way, it comes awfully close to closing the gap between stargate and star trek - although i don't know if eveyrone finds that a good idea. I do though.
