Edited by: Sevarus James on 23/08/2006 03:19:13 Just as an fyi:
Transgaming released the 5.2.5 engine earlier today. Here is the blurb:
<snip> August 22nd 2006, TransGaming releases Cedega 5.2.5 codenamed Spearfish, a point release to correct a number of issues with EVE Online, the ATI drivers, and some fixes for a variety of other games.
EVE Online's update, entitled Dragon, brings with it a slew of new security features designed to protect the game world and its inhabitants. Just in time for its release, Cedega 5.2.5 includes the necessary low-level improvements required for these security features to work under Linux. With this update, players can continue to enjoy running their favorite game seamlessly under Linux. We would like to thank CCP for their involvement, providing us with early access to this update, and helping to make this happen.
Spearfish also includes a work-around for a long standing ATI driver bug. This work-around allows more games to work through Cedega with the official ATI FGLRX drivers. Numerous games that previously crashed with an ATIFGLRXDRI or BadValue error may now be working, including Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto Vice City and Star Wars Battlefront. TransGaming would like to thank the ATI Linux driver development team for providing assistance and insight into the nature of the problem, as well as for continuing to work to provide a better gaming experience for all Linux ATI users.
Also in Cedega 5.2.5 are fixes for the recent Battlefield 2 mouse issues that users have been experiencing with the latest versions of Xorg, incorrectly aligned mouse pointers in Cedega's desktop mode, several game installers that previously crashed with Fedora Core 5, and a startup issue that prevented Far Cry from running on recent distributions. <snip>
From me, and I'm betting quite a few other linux users, a HEARTFELT THANKYOU to CCP for this assistance. Turns out I didn't need that 'xp' drive I'd built to be on the safeside after all. ----- ------------

And it works wonderfully.
I'd like to thank CCP for making the code available to Transgaming so they could get us a fix out so quickly. -- Commander Zevrik Obikai Fleet Operations, C.N.S. Letalis Caldari Independent Navy Reserve

# Support for the EVE Online ``Dragon'' update. # Fix the corporation time and character age display in EVE Online.
So the corp display and timer stuff should be working properly now as well.
Also, Transgaming forums have added EVE-ONLINE to officially supported status by giving us a seperate forum dedicated to EVE. ----- ------------

Just wanted to throw in my appreciation for this as well. I was pretty worried and upset when the test server builds refused to run, and this is very good news to hear.
Thanks CCP for giving a portion of your attention to the Linux users. Very much appreciated.

How well does it actually work though? How is the framerate compared to windows, and does everything really work as intended?
Thing is gaming is the only real reason I'm still using windows, but nowdays eve is the only game I ever play really. So if it's working properly under linux... well who knows.

That depends on hardware and such, just like anything else. An example:
My rig is an x2 3800 nvidia (7600)
My fps in space is about 2-5fps lower on average. In station about 30% lower -but not noticeable. this was benching with the NON dragon code. I'll be posting bench info in the tech forum tomorrow after having a chance to run XP and Linux on the same hardware.
The lower fps is due to the video drivers, rather than cedega's 'wrapping' however.
I've been playing exclusively under cedega since march, and have been very happy with system performance overall, not to mention the ability to not have to dual boot any longer.

Er yeah ok :p
I have a T2400 laptop with an X1400 and a gig memory. Performance under windows is excellent but maybe it won't cut it under linux. I'll hang on and look for benching from the new dragon version and see what I'll do then - if the performance loss stays at around 5-10% it won't be a problem though, still clearly worth it.

It would be interesting to have you try it and report results either in transgaming forums or down in tech section here. The new ATI fixes would be worth the 'look' if nothing else. ----- ------------

So you're saying I should actually get out there and put in an effort instead of waiting for other people to do all the work for me :p Sounds like a good idea tbh, I just may do it :)

lmao. Yep. Even if not successful on first try, the info will definitely help out...especially with the new ATI drivers that have just been released. Those + transgaming's work around for the known ati graphics bugs are worth reporting. No feedback means no fixin'. ----- ------------

/me hopes cedega will be truly devleoped by the time its time to either stay with xp or go vista so he may take the path back to the roots of his by switcing os but not to vista.
And oh yeah, free as in freedom. Dont let the big corps ruin your internet. Dont belive you can't make a difference, the world changes all the time only question is who is doing the changing ^_^

Edited by: Sevarus James on 23/08/2006 14:28:10 Just a quick eyeball of fps and performance. (Just got home and did the updates to cedega and EVE.)
1. patching the eve client was smooth and fast. No issues. 2. I made absolutely no changes to my settings from prior to dragon. (graphics, or otherwise.)
Rig: x2 3800 nvidia 7600 gt oc 2 gig ram 1900x1200 resolution.
68+ fps in station. (lower than xp by about 30%, but not noticable eyeball differences.) undocked: 35-40 fps. (next to a dreaded amarr crosshatch graphic bugged station.) no issues.
warping: 45-60fps. -was happy to see the frame rate is more steady with less spiking up or down with new client. gates: 35-50fps with no spiking of frame rate. exiting warp is a LOT smoother now. belts: 35-60fps.
Overall, the framerates I'm seeing undocked are maybe MAYBE 2-5% lower than the native XP side.
Playability: No difference to me than running native XP version.
Now its bed time. o/

Edited by: Arshes Nei on 23/08/2006 14:35:45 Very very nice, maybe i can now also go back to using 2 eve clients at the same time, under windows i always get a severe fps drop in one of the clients if i use 2. And im talking about 2-5 fps(not slower, total ) in one client while the other client doesnt get slower at all.

Pretty much the only reason I am running windows is to play games... which now days is just EVE. The only other thing I do is make EVE movies.
What do the linux guys use to capture footage in place of fraps and what program do you use to put it together?

Nice... a glorious answer to all my nail-biting questions. I'm impressed by the speedy turnaround by Transgaming.
Hearty thanks to CCP and Transgaming (and Sevarus for keeping up on both the CCP and Transgaming forums).
