Pod and Planet Fiction Contest YC116 Prize pool is 27 bil ISK, so far. New writers and writers returning from the past two contests, the details are in the link. It's the same as before-- an EVE canon-based category, a freeform/ingame stories category, and a humor category.
Sponsoring the prizes: EVE-Bet (25 bil ISK donation) Crink (1 bil ISK donation) The Angel Project (1 bil ISK so far) And we may have some other donations coming in.
Thank you generous sponsors and fine patrons of the arts!
Plenty of rewards and incentive for writers. If anybody else wants to sponsor, let me know. Last year various very cool individuals and corps donated 8 PLEX. (I'll as Chribba to handle donations for us again-- no tinfoil needed).
Judges: -CCP Falcon -CSM member Mike Azariah -myself
Deadline for submissions is December 3, 2014. Check the link for contest rules and start writing, all. Let's see some great stuff like we had the past two years, ye writers. o7 |

I too plan to compete again this year.
An Observation: First year was fun. Second year was wonderful surprise. Third year means you've created a venerable institution. Congratulations!
A Question: It wouldn't surprise me if many of the contestants would like to support this venerable institution. Being stand up characters (as all Capsuleers are) is there, perhaps a method in place for anonymous contribution? |

Anonymous contributions from contestants would be very nice. Anyone interested can just send me a mail and we'll set the transfer up with Chribba. He's kindly holding donation funds for us again this year. |

Rather busy this year, but I will attempt to set aside some time to get something sorted. Hopefully will get something typed up again as last years was fun.
Quoted from Doc Fury: "Concerned citizens: Doc seldom plays EVE on the weekends during spring and summer, so you will always be on your own for a couple days a week. Doc spends that time collecting kittens for the on-going sacrifices, engaging in reckless outdoor activities, and speaking in the 3rd person."

How about a new category for 2015?
"Eve Nerds with No Life" = 17,500 - 40,000 words :P
If you'd had this one this year I'd be sorted, but struggling currently with an entry with 5000 words. Go figure

Man, really hoping there's a lot more stories stacked up waiting to be delivered here in the next few days! Otherwise, we're going to have to start advertising at Fanfest to bolster numbers
Got another story submitted for this year (missed last year's somehow) and this one is very personal to me for a variety of reasons. I've been debating this story topic for just under two years now when I started thinking about it for the Pod and Planet Contest for 2012. The only thing that held me back was my limited knowledge of the lore but I decided to take a chance and go for it anyway.
Here it is: Perhaps Reborn
So exciting! Good luck to everyone!

Wow, a nice pipeline wave of entries crashed down on the last day. 60 original stories total. The 8,000 Suns pushed ahead to the most entries; that ought to be an intense one. Who knows what kind of things are in there, but I'd bet it's interesting reading.
Day in the Life is close behind in entries, and as always, completely unpredictable in terms of style and substance. Very nice.
The Swear and Curse category evolved overnight, from a little chuckling corner, into a twice the poundage force projecting laughs into New Eden. Put your goggles on. :)
Next steps for the contest: Give the judges some time to read and think. While you're at it, read your entry and the other stories. Give your fellow writer colleagues some comments. Updates on progress toward prize announcements will be posted on the contest's Updates page.
Please don't forget the people who generously supported this EVE community event, ye writers. Give some of the love back, they're good ones. :) To wit: -EVE-Bet (25 bil ISK donation) -eve-games.net (5 bil ISK donation) -Crink (1 bil ISK donation) -The Angel Project (1 bil ISK) -Clueless Space Nerds podcast (1 bil ISK) one or more anonymous players (6 bil ISK)

Update: The judges have about 80% of the scores in. Having the contest run through November wasn't the first choice (unfortunately), but necessary in order to have a certain notorious judge on board (fortunately), and getting some nice prize donations from kind sponsors (fortunately). And we ended up with 50 good entries (fortunately), which required reading and rating into the holidays (unfortunately). So, considering the judges' family/travel/holiday partying commitments, it might be New Year's YC117 when we announce winners. \o/ Source: Fortunately Unfortunately by Michael Foreman
While you're waiting, BBC News article, Good Omens: How Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett wrote a book How can two writers write a novel together? By both being very imaginative and cool. They really didn't know who what which in the end. Oh yeah! True to the spirit of EVE Online, I'd say.
I'll of course post updates here and on the contest page as soon as they happen.

Thanks Sam for continuing to run this contest - it really brings out some amazing stuff!
Thanks also to the judges for your participation and bringing a high profile to the contest - there is always a lot to read and I know you put a lot of time into doing so - thanks for the recognition but even more for the time and effort you put in.
Thanks sponsors for the great prizes that help Sam be successful!
And finally a huge congrats to Kirith Kodachi, I'm really happy to see him win this year after a bit of a disappointment last year.
Congrats to all the winners!

Phenomenal. Congratulations to all the winners and especially to everyone who didn't win. Writing is hard, and even if you don't get paid for it, having the completed work is its own reward.
Thank you, Sam, for running the contest year after year. I look forward to entering again (and again).
And thanks to the judges and sponsors for the $$$weet ca$$$h. You are true patrons of the arts.
Isn't it ironic?

Just send me an Evemail. I'll also put some observations about the entries in general on the contest website.
You guys give each other some feedback too, eh?
Now to coordinate with the donors to get award funds distributed. It might take a little while-- but not a month, like judging always does. |

\o/ NICE, I placed! This was a fun contest, and the first of its kind I've participated in. As a side benefit, it definitely got me interested in the lore of the game, whereas before I completely ignored it. Thanks to all the judges and donors for making this contest possible, and thanks to the writers for showing me the oft-ignored lore side of the game. |

-Zendane will be making an audio version of Kirith Kodachi's Grand Prize story "Borrowed Time." Never nice. Looking forward to checking out the finished piece at The Eve Reader Podcast
-I posted some general comments about this year's entries on the contest webpage's Home page, for what it's worth.
-Hold tight prize winners. I know you have bills to pay and baby needs a new pair of shoes, and we're working on getting awards distributed directly to you from the sponsors. Just an admin task, but it takes a little time. |

Sam & Folks:
Thanks from me for holding and doing the contest as well! It really was great, and I am looking forward to YC117 now as well.
I didn't put this out until now - only Sam knew - because I didn't want to bias the judging in any way. I found the Pod and Planet fiction contest when I arrived home from one of my friend's funerals. Kory was just a couple years younger than I was and was the husband of my oldest college friend. Kory loved science fiction, technology, and the military. He and his wife owned an RPG game company.
When I found Pod & Planet I resolved instantly to write up an entry and memorialize Kory. What "The Gift" ended up being was an all-ecompassing tie-together between EVE Online and Dust514 - all of New Eden together, which I thought and hoped worked out well.
For the first fiction I'd written in over a decade I was shocked and very, very happy to win 2nd Place in the Free Form category. But what was nice - and Sam agreed - was that I actually won the contest back in very late November. Allison, Kory's widow, my oldest college friend, was the first one to read the story before I submitted it to the contest. Her comment: "You pushed all the right buttons."
Alan is a miner and explorer by trade. The prize proceeds will be financing two new ships when training for them is done a few months from now. Kory's wife will be given the honor of naming those ships when they're commissioned.
Yea. I won.

Update on prize distributions: All requests for prize distributions have been sent to the sponsors. Really sorry about the slow pace, it was kind of like setting up a 2009 Kernite extraction/mfging outputs spreadsheet.
Award winners, your isk transfers may come from more that one source. 1 bil from here, the remaining .1 bil from there, like that. If you don't have your full prize awards by around Jan. 21, just let me know. |

Thanks again to all involved! Already spent all the isk and then some, drunken sailor ship buying spree! Whoopee!
I know you have enough on your plate Telegram Sam, but were there any comments on my other entry, "The Icy Dancer" by any chance, on the part of the judges? Where did it score I wonder? Thanks,
MD |
