Will I actually find Pirates there, or is that too much Sec?
And am I just gonna get pwned?
Im in a Catalyst, with 2 Medium Pulse Lasers, A Gatling Pulse Laser, a Duel Light Pulse Laser, a Medium Beam Laser, a Light Ion Particle Cannon, a Light Neutron Particle Cannon, a 150mm light Autocannon and nothing else extra other than added power and cpu.
I have gunnery 4, small energy turret 2, projectile 2 and hybrid 1, Destroyer skill 3, Ship Command level 4.
Do I have the slightest chance or am I just looking to get podded?

If by Pirates, you mean npc pirates usually found in asteroid belts then in 0.2 you'll run across frigate, cruiser, and battlecruiser rats which can really put the hurt on a destroyer.
Or do you mean player pirates?
Thats an interesting setup of weapons you have on that Catalyst. However, I would not recommend putting a mix of the racial weapons on a ship. If you take a look at the catalyst's info, you'll notice that it gets a bonus of + 10% to tracking speed and falloff range of Hybrid turrets (railguns and blasters) per level of Destroyers, and a fixed + 50% to optimal range of hybrid turrets. I'd recommend taking full advantage of these bonuses by using blasters or railguns though I'd prefer 8 125mm railguns.

Edited by: Yello1 on 26/08/2006 05:40:37 I fully admit I had not the slightest idea. I think I was mainly matching budget, availability and available power and cpu to get that mix. Dont think I noticed the bonus for the ship.
Turns out to have been a bore. No station there, so only a few people in the one sector (and none of them pirates) and no one in the next one. So Ive hightailed it back to rethink my loadout.

I doubt that you have the slightest chance unless you plan to hunt pirates in T1 frigs. Anything else can and will kill your destroyer since you have a large sig radius and the toughness of a frig.

Yes, that's not going to work. Don't use the catalyst for Yarring, get a Tristan and put a nice setup op it. Remember that most people in low sec will be flying cruisers or bigger and ifthey're on the same (or better) SP level than you it's going to be difficult to kill them. Once you get some skills under your belt you should do better.
ALSO remember that you shouldn't go after pirates, you should in fact go after miners and ratters. Belt pirates by definition have good, short range PVP setups which is what you DON'T want to meet. You want the ratters and miners who have no clue about setups and have no defense against a small, fast moving target.

I'd suggest dropping from a destroyer to a good T1 frigate. I used to hunt npc rats in 0.1 in a Punisher, granted though, that was hard work. Try a frigate with a close range set up, so you can, get 'under the guns' of the bigger npc rats. Though keep a close eye on npc destroyer types, they can hurt a frig bad, and fast.

You need a good corp with similar interests. A gang of 5 people would have a significantly greater chance of success, and could easily take out a cruiser in frigs. ___________________________________________ I win eve!

If you are going to hunt player pirates in anything less than a Cruiser, look forward to some hurt.
Most pirates focus all their skill point to being a pirate and if you do not have some serious PVP skills, it wont matter what you fly. ------------------------------------- Sammael's Legion ARCH |

- You have no warp scrambler? You're not going to kill any other player, your target will run away. - You're not using the ship's bonuses. - You don't have a tank: likely to be disastrous against NPCs, and most players unless you kill them very quickly. - Your weapons have a mix of optimal ranges and tracking rates.
If I had to fight players in a catalyst, I'd cover it in railguns with a magnetic field stabiliser + damage control + plate, and hope to kill the target frigate before it did much damage. It's too slow to chase frigates, especially with a plate, so you have to hit them from a distance; and it's too fragile to engage anything larger.
For NPCs it's fine so long as you don't encounter any cruisers or missile batteries.
