Dev blog: http://community.eveonline.com/news/dev-blogs/quick-give-me-manual-control/
They are adding WASD keys for manual flight correction because new EVE people get confused when double clicking in space. Totally optional for bittervets, of course.
Will strafing allow for new content?
Can we out-Keanu missiles fired at ships?
Will this result in new fleet dance flash mob content?
Is this the end of EVE: Valkyrie?
Will we finally be able to post on the forums using a smartphone without having a nervous breakdown?
Is EVE dying?

I remember when I first started a few months back! I spent a week using celestials and objects to align my ship and move it! Only when a GM randomly talked to me I got to ask how to move my ship properly!
Maybe this will spice up combat by making it more reponsive! |

First of all, Lister, I like your jacket. Can I have it?
The WASD option is optional and not non-optional at all. Does that make you feel better?
And soon as you flick the option to the "on" position, EVE will be dying.

This is an outrage. The lack of manual piloting controls was the last thing keeping me subbed. I quit.

It doesn't help at all, as soon as there is any form of advantage to wasd piloting it will be compulsory lest we get left behind, I love this game because it rewards tactics over twitching, this is one step closer to twitch gaming.

Finally.
WASD for now, but joystick is inevitable. I can fly close to someone, release some flammable gas and when they shoot me, the gas will explode and kill them. The only thing missing was the joystick!'
But for real, it actually not a big deal, thus no outrage lol. |

The problem with the point and click in space system were, first, that this wasn't really point and click; it was (probably because of 1 Hz server ticks) unresponsive enough to turn it into point-click-click-click-*start acceleration*-*expletive*-*pop* . Because of the lack of proper fixed camera, it was also imprecise. Controlling direction and range during a PvP engagement with that system of manual flying while being distracted by a ton of other factors, like module cycles and overview, is an art in itself (an art which a casual player like me CBA to master). WASD+fixed camera actually makes flying an interceptor a ton of fun, even more so that it is now, so, I say welcome to our joystick wielding overlords. |

Awesome news ^^ can't w8 to fly it that way
I see some more options with it, like when aliigining manualy to some thingy (like planet, gates etc) some stuff take place informing that You can click designed button for warp to it.
I think it's great feature, it wont interfere with standard controls so no one should feel bad. |

It'll be optional. Don't like it? Don't use it. You can continue to use the current system.
People will use any excuse to get buttmad these days.
I do not like the men on this spaceship. They are uncouth and fail to appreciate my better qualities. I have something of value to contribute to this mission if only they would realize it.

What makes you think wasd will be more responsive?
Especially during large fleet battles? I'm more concerned it will make a bigger issue of my laggy antipodean connection to the server, even more presses to lose now.....
I find it counter intuitive to not be re spawned in my ship when I lose it stupidly.... |

I would imagine it might still be very jarring, and depending on how commands get processed and queued up from it, oversteering in slowly aligning ships and in TiDi will be a common occurance.
For example, I could have hit A a dozen times before my plated MWD-running battleship swings to the left from the first press, and depending how much of a turn one "hit" gives, the damn thing might end up doing a doughnut from all the stacked commands. And if I realised this and attempted to correct with a couple of presses of D, would it still execute the A commands before the correcting D's. I imagine in the end , there would be a lot of "screw this, hit align" to fix the wonky flight.
Should be fun for high-skill players wanting to frigate dogfight, but once you get up to certain align-times, it will probably be worthless. |

i wonder how responsive it's going to be
when flying a frigate (from aus), i have trouble manual piloting and keeping point because it can take seconds for my ship to begin responding to a double-click command
i'm pretty sure i've only got some kills because the other person didn't see the disruption icon at the bottom of the screen flicking off-on-off-on as i attempt to manage range and heat |

I'm not too upset with this. Always thought it was strange that there really wasn't any manual piloting in EVE (and no, furiously double clicking in space while also dragging your camera in between clicks to maintain a decent orbit is not manual piloting). Although, I suppose I'll have to switch up my module hotkeys, or just bind movement somewhere else. |

That plus an ability to keep shooting with "forward locked' turrets and bays when jammed would be epic. I have heard it over 1000 times, the lamentation of "Well I could not move, could not target, nothing. Then I died. This game sucks".
If we could still at least shoot and "dogfight" when jammed and scrammed instead of having to wait to die, that would be a huge plus for the game.
And we know that a forward turret that requires no locking is possible in the game. Bomb launchers anybody?
The long standing problem of being "jammed to death" answered NOT in "CCP nerfing something" but in simply being given a tool to use, to be able to turn and fire on your opponent... think about it!
Nobody asks for an "I WIN" Button. What the players want is a chance. Not "Oh I'm jammed. There's the scram...." (opens market screen). Give us forward shooting with WASD and that is the chance long awaited for.

That's not a problem at all. The problem is the people who don't fit correctly to counter potential problems they could face in a fight (such as ECCM, ecm or ecm drones of their own, mobil depots + high EHP or ancillary boosted tanks to refit warp core stabs, FoF missiles for ships that can use missiles, micro jump drives if the bad guy is using disruptor s instead of scrams etc etc).
If you can get jammed and scrammed to the point of uselessness you put too many eggs in one basket (or didn't bring friends like you should have). With all the tools available in game, CCP should not have to compensate for player incompetence. |
