Is It Just Me, or is Eve a little overly Goth?
The Game?
The Community?
Just seems to be a skosh overly little black lace draped, and not in the sexy way.
Or is it Emo? Im not so clued in as to know the difference.
Either way, Whatsup with that?

Yep....sounds like a typically EMO comment to me.
Honestly though, no, it never seened gothic to me at all. Could do with more massive gothic looking ships that look like quasi-cathedrals in space though...give em to Amarr....that whole Golden Banana look is quite dull.

nothing more irritating than an emo who thinks their unique and special and not part of a trend/fashion. ironically I hang out with a lot of goths/emos and they take longer to get ready than i do.
i was more of a surf dude - baggy pants/combats. But is eve emo? only in a forum sense that people tend to just write about what naging eve issues they have and many are drama queens as its very easy to Express yourself in forums online, the ultimate Massively Multiplayer Online Game.

I'm listening to the sisters of Mercy... I have a Nighthawk because it's jet black... and it's called "Bela Lugosi's Dead".
no, no, not a goth at all. not a goth. no, honest.

anyway, what's wrong with gothic style? it'd be a bit ghastly if all the ships looked like chav boy racer's escort XR3i's with under-floor lighting and bass bins. or like Manga comicbook toys.... or lilke something out of Flash gordon. (though the music would be great. "Flaaaash! Ahah!" as you warp. )... or worse, imagine eve with bright primary colours. WoW in space. ugh.
personally, I'd say that Eve is Industrial, rather than goth. but hey, that's just a category.
As for the subject, as a goth for more years than I want to be admitting to (let's just say I bought Floodland on it's release), I'd simply say this: it does not matter who you are, wether you're a goth, biker, rivethead, punk, skater, emo, raver, clubber, or any other category. be whoever you want to be, not what other people tell you you are.
Anyhow, if it were truly overly goth, we'd have characters in aviator shades, pale-faced loners with black hair, strange post-christian weirdoes, liberal deviants, wardrobes filled with rubber, pvc and bits of metal, sexually androygnous creatures and men pretending to be women, large listings of stimulants and drugs, ships that make reference to types of blades, and references to exotic dancers... erm. *ahem*. then again, let's not go there. Nothing at all to be seen here.
(yes, I am joking there, and playing up to goth stereotypes)

Yes, much of the Eve Online Forum community seems to be emo, if one is to judge that by the amount of whining seen here.
Me, I wear black, but I'm not goth. I'm a black jeans, black steel toed boots, black ManOWar t-shirt, black leather coat wearing computer tech. I have no time for whiners, and the best use I have found for an emo so far has been in the connection of said boots with their whiny little faces.
However on the other side I'm generally a nice guy who prefers to avoid fights, yet loves finishing them if someone really wants to go there with me ^.^
And I'm really bored atm as I'm waiting for my damn barge to get to my Ferox so I can kill things again... so excuse the rambling.

Makes for nice combat mission music, although unless you're doing lvl 4's you're not going to get to listen more than 2 or 3 songs per mission.

And don't forget denying that you are or ever were goth and wearing entirely white (except for black socks) to prove it
I've got to admit that I did choose sebiestor 50% because of the description on them , but I tried my best to make the bugger kindof friendly, failed quite bit though
P.s. I found Bauhaus' songs in general not quite it for naming ships, something about the general length of the song names although it would be quite funny to name a newbie ship Double Dare |

But, I can assure you that I often mine whilst listening to Britney, Nsync, and such like.
Or not.
I'm not Goth though. I couldn't tell my Andrew Eldritch from my Rozz Williams.
These days, I don't think Andrew Eldritch could tell himself from Rozz Williams either, really.
But no. If by gothic, one interprets the building style, I guess Amarr and Blood Raiders might qualify.
And certainly, there are avatars in the game that reminds me of one bell-ringer from the quintessial gothique building, the Norte Dame. What is it with people and screwing the character's face anyways...don't they know that the avatars are SUFFERING!
Not that anyone in here would understand, either.
Oh, and just to be in on the cool kids lines, I'm so goth my wrists slash themselves.

Without wishing to make a prejudiced blanket general statement, the community is full of metallers who don't wash, drink cheap cider, and draw things on their face.
Whenever anyone posts a "what are you listening to now?" thread it quickly becomes full of song titles such as "I ate your baby" by KnaaarlDeath "Check Out My Arm Carvings" by Savage Cannibal Angst Machine "I have a deathwish and am depressed" by Carnal Chimp Mother etc etc
I advocate the marketing of Eve to more chavs and hippies tbh. They are funnier to take the mick out of.
Another solution would be to give an Eve disk away free with the next "HedKandi Summer Anthems 783" CD so we get more fans of clothes shop house tbh. Then instead of talking about hardcore somethingorother and the grim reaper and all that, we may get more discussions of a "do you like my new Rockport shoes?" nature. Which can only be a good thing in my opinion.
For the record, I am not a metaller or chav or hippie. I did, however, once own a pair of burberry socks.

If EvE is anything it is very 1980s.
Which isn't surprising given that the 1980s were also the golden age of Hollywood Sci Fi.
Hence EvE avatars tend to look like.
Adam ant. Cyndy Laupier. Andrew Eldritch. Morrisey. Simon LeBonn. Lenny Kravetz. Garry Newman. Rick Ocasek. Susan Janet Ballion. Barry Andrews. Iggy Pop. Billy Corgan.
And of course the Emperor from Starwars.
In times of doubt I ask myself "What would BoB do?", and then do the opposite. |

Noooo, we can't have Chav's in Eve. They get everywhere as it is.
The pikey little scum would probably knick the wheels off my Destroyer or take it for a little joy ride to 0.0 space and abandon it burning...
They'd probably bully some geek in school to hack the ship code and give it a "Burbury" texture too, and they'd be seen congregating around Jump Gates drinking cider and shouting at passers by...

I doubt the game wil be overtaken by emos. Emos are not known for sticking around very long, if you know what I mean. Perhaps there is a growing sense of apathy or nihilsm in the game as younger players brush up against the dominance of older players. Much like RL.

Hmmm...Amarrians have a superiority complex (due to the fear of their own inferiority), are basically caught up hiding their faces (or is it just the bald spot?) for fear of reprisals, and are too fanatically religiously dogmatic to be considered sane. Gallente seem pretty happy and sane, but a race that looks like **** stars gotta have some kinda issues. Minmatar...well we just want equal footing in EVE. Though we do have a habit of making the ugliest ships ever to leave a docking bay. Perhaps there is a mindset that if it looks like floating space debris no one will shoot it.
As for Caldari...well they're just ****ed that they don't get discounts on Gallente Holoreels anymore.

Ok, so I was at work ( I work as a service technician within facilities managment (helpdesk)) and I saw some dweeby looking kids hanging outside the office right before lunch. And they were the typical emo kids. So as I step out to go get lunch I realized that half of them seemed like twistedly disturbed but not in a ghey way. However they looked ghey. So I am like...is this what followed the whole goth thing. Ghey looking kids in slicked black jeans looking starved for attention or just in need of a good beating.
The game is hardly goth imho, more likely to be bordering on the barbaric (pvp), and glorious (technical and artistic). It's never ending strife to be the best damn MMORPG, it's player creation and career, it's opportunities to "go your own way" and shape your character to your liking. The vast knowledge that veterans have and the very many o them that share that self said knowledge.
Now I hardly believe that the eve community can be summed up as either goth or emo or ghey. We are simply members of community that enjoy a game that caters to all levels of interests and intelligence . Unlike the WoW community which seems to be comprised of half-wits and dweebs. (Oops, just realized one of my best friends plays WoW). Hmmm, well there is no accounting for taste I guess. Mind you he isn't exactly the sharpest tool in the shed.
This post was totally irrelevant or was it...?

hrm. weapons at disposal. yup sounds about right. never get within 5 feet of a flailing cybergoth unless you want an eye taken out by the lashing synthdreads.
and warriors? bah. humbug. We did'nt fight the Punk Wars just so these emo sprogs could write bad poetry at the steps of the local war memorial. We were there on the front row, so that proper, quality acts could rise from the gutter and make a name for themselves - top-class bands like Specimen, and All About Eve. That's why we all play Eve of course, cos we still remember Julianne Regan on Top of the Pops, failing to mime... And it's not the same as that anymore, and I need some more central nervous system stimulants if I'm to get up and dance to Bauhaus any more, and what is this racket? I can't tell the difference any longer and they all look the same, we did'nt do this just so you could buy a fishnet top in your local fleamarket, when we were young, we had to make our own clothes, and we did'nt get to shop around for anything, it was all charity, I tell you, you don;t know how lucky you are. And look at the computergames, when we were young, we 'ad to imagine the rust and grunge in the wireframe ships, I tell you, you're lucky you are, and where's me drugs, I can't get ready for a combat till I've got the warpaint on, like the southern death cult gigs, ah, I remember, before they were famous, when we were young, and we could only dream of playing eve like this, I say, and what about all this music, I tell you, when we started we had a drum machine withanotiginalname'an it was all the tech we needed......

jeez.
Imho eve has the right theme for almost every possible clichT.
*irony on*
Caldari - brutish looks, for all those strong guys who work out in the gym / like the military stuff
Gallente - for the individualistic and a little bit arrogant neo-freethinkers, which like to show off (i mean, just look at the girls!)
Amarr - for either the mysterious "goth" type (i hate the term "emo", better call them bat-cave-kiddies, as every other reasonable goth does ) or the anorexic self loathers.
Minmatar - for the ones under us, who have tendencies to gang up and fight/refuse the regime, like punks.
*irony off*
sure, these are extremes...but compared to any other mmo, the racial characteristics in EVE reflect certain social tpes in the real world to an extent, which is just brilliant, i could think of noone who would not be able to design an avatar for himself that he can come to like and be able to identify himself with (at least visually), given he really looks at most of the possible race/bloodline combinations.

I'd actually say Eve is pretty anti emo. I mean, even if Eve had any significant emo player base it would just... die out, slowly but surely. An emo kid who got podkilled and smacktalked to would probably jump out the window and swallow some pills and a bicycle and slit its wrists midair and stuff. It would be too much for its poor little black heart :<

You know, I really don't know what this whole "emo" thing is - or where it's going.
We've all been happily being goths since the early 80's, and while there's always a few pretentious kids (I was one iaround 1987) it was never a negative attitude - cynical and dark, perhaps, but never negative. Cutting did'nt really rear it's ugly head, and certainly not in any "look at me I'm so cool" way, the entire scene was (and is) a positive, energetic culture with mutual support for those who are troubled, and streaked by a self-depreciating humour, where we take the p*** out of ourselves just as much as anyone else does, and we appreciate the absurdity of our wardrobe and lifestyles.
Now, in little more than a year, we're inveriably being associated with this "emo" scene that has absolutely nothing to do with goth culture - and we're being tarred with the same brush, and implied we have this same insane obesssion with cutting (whereas those few cutters before were quite rare.), and the image of an overwhelming teenage angst.
Those old goths who've been there, seen it, lived above the chemist's and been dressed in black since before the "emo" generation were born seem completely unable to find a single point of association. These teenage brats seem to think that no-one ever could understand their angst, or have any experence of what they're going through (even when it was us who were in drag, out of our faces on amphetamines and powders when they were in nappies), and means that they're rejecting the support network of old goths, who range from 30 up to their late 50's, and who have for plenty of generations of goths been a balancing influence on the self-destructive streaks as teenage identity crisis becomes mature adult lifestyle.
Where on earth is this fashion coming from, (and I'll call it that because it's so media-hyped), and more importantly, what is it that's made it catch the mass market so that everyone and their pet dog is describing stuff as "Emo"?
gah. I feel old and jaded by the entire thing.

I know how you feel.. (old school goths4tw)
The whole Emo thing really does annoy me, more so with the those that cut for attention with the whole "Every scar is an honour badge to all the butterflies that died.. look at my scars." crap. I know a few self harmers, and well been one myself and its a personal things and has nothing to do with being a goth/alternative/trendie/chav/cross dresser/whatever but thats another topic..
As for eve being too goth.. Not really, it has some Gothic period touches and is visually dark and bleak with an touch of a victorian industiral feel in places but i wouldn't call it goth..

I wanted to post on this thread. For a minute. Because it's so dark.
But not dark like the poetry on this napkin, on which I'm bearing my blackened soul with bllod-red ink. This cold, unfeeling napkin from a local coffee shop that is, indeed, dark.
Like the night, darkly.
So I don't care about this thread. Because noone cares about me. My only friends are the clove cigarette in my mouth, the charcoal pencil in my black backpack, this napkin, and the razor responsible for so many scars....
Now I'm going back to my poem. Which doesn't rhyme, because rhyming is for fairy tales, and my life is a bleak, miserable existence that bounds from one suicidal depression to another.
So....whatever.
P.S. I hate my parents. **** them. ------------------------------------ I like long walks, a good book before bed, and human entrails served cold with a side order of scrap metal. |

god, I hope you're joking. Start treating her as a woman and not an object, try not using expressions like "do a goth" and "chick", and start thinking with the head that is'nt below your waist, and you might get a chance in a million. Start showing a bit of understanding, share some of the same passions and interests and the chances will get better yet.
gah, is it any wonder I feel like a jaded cynic when people seem to have a purile interest, like goths have different anatomy or something?
(oh, and if the being mature and not a sexist dinosaur fails, try shopping for rubber and leather, go down to the Slimelights in London, find someone pretty and say "nice boots". if you're lucky, you've pulled. if you're really lucky, it'll turn out not be a bloke in a dress, but you'll probably not know till it's too late. )

Ways to net a goth girl:
1. Cut yourself and go to a rehab clinic. 2. Write really bad poetry that "speaks to her" 3. Tell her you're bisexual. Goth girls love a guy they think they can get to do another guy. (Turnabout, I suppose, is fair play, eh?) 4. If you don't fit into clothes from Hot Topic, shoot up until you do. 5. Hate emo kids. 6. Tell them you're not interested 7. Own a deck of "gother than thou" cards. Great conversation starter. 8. Claim that absinthe is your favorite alcoholic beverage 9. Convert to a religion that will **** parents off 10. Learn to use words like "existentialism", "nonconformist", "sheeple", and "Victorian" in everyday sentences. ------------------------------------ I like long walks, a good book before bed, and human entrails served cold with a side order of scrap metal. |

Have you been to a goth club lately?
There's your Caldari in the body armour and the big boots, taking over the dancefloor as soon as the DJ puts on Rammstein.
Those with outfits consisting mainly of buckles, straps, duct tape and fluorescent hair extensions (possibly held on by duct tape)... that'll be the Minmatar.
In the shadows, that's where you'll find the Amarr lurking, robed in velvet and complaining that music isn't what it used to be, and that this unholy EBM racket isn't 'goth'. Mention the words 'Marilyn', 'Manson' and 'goth' in the same paragraph, and the righteous wrath of the gother-than-thou will be visited upon your head. They're the ones requesting 'Pale Empress', but they'll also emerge from the shadows for the Mission and the Sisters.
And the Gallente? Well, they'll be either at the bar, philosophising about the correct way to serve absinthe, or bombarding the DJs with requests for obscure tracks they're unlikely to have, but will settle for Alien Sex Fiend, Killing Miranda, old Cure and Nine Inch Nails. And of course they'll be the ones dancing to MM's 'Sweet Dreams', just to annoy the Amarr (and because it's such a gorgeously depraved version).

I wouldn't have said EVE is Goth per se; it has some goth style influences, but also has a lot of others as well.
For example, you have the Steampunk Minmatar, the Parisenne-meets-Ibiza Gallente, the borg-esque cyberpunk Sanshas, the admittedly goth/baroque stylings of the Amarr... the list goes on.... __________________________________________ "In girum imus nocte, et consumimur igni."

Ok, ok. in that case....
Who all's coming to Whitby Goth Weekend this october. The Damned are headlining, and I'll see you all in the Elsinore?
Whitby Eve Meet? I can think of at least a dozen eve players/ex-players who will be there, and there's got to be more.
and if we're name-dropping old goth bands, has anyone, anywhere, ever got hold of a track by a band called Seraphim Faith, and a track called "Unashamed". it must've been released somewhere between 1986 and 1988, by a bunch of dodgy scots goths, on an indy label. I only heard it once or twice on a radio, never found a copy, and they seem to have sunk without a trace since. which is a shame, because they sounded like early Clan of Xymox crossed with Children on Stun, and were rather good, I thought.

So I understand being different just for the sake of being different.
But I digress. In my observaton "goth" started with "Bloodletting" (Which has a true southern gothic sound) by Concrete Blond, then the imagery of Ann Rice was added. Which has a true southern gothic sound.
Anyway over time Goth changed from the weird vamp thing to to a more exibishionist and even more effiminate thing. The as emo developed it slowly abosrbed the lamest parts of goth.

You are confusing avante garde groups and movement with popular trends.
People like you always like to something was popular several years before it was just because they can reference a few undergound clubs in a couple of cities.
For instance you say "80,/90s rehash". Thats the one I was in, but the real rehash didnt start till about 92(unless you mean grunge style puck). In the late 80s and and even early 90s punk wasnt mainstream(like Emo has been for years now). Like I said at a giant university you just didnt see it.
Now dont mistake my nit picking for thinking there was something signifigant about it all. I dont. It wasnt special despite what we thought then. It was just another atttept for kids to rebel a bit and feel unique.

Please, tell me I've misinterpreted your comment, and you're not trying to imply that the goth scene was'nt at it's peak in the early 80's?
following up from the first wave of the Damned, Siouxie and Bauhaus in 1978-1980, the goth scene (then called positive punk) grew up around Ollie Wisdom's "Batcave" club in 1980, with acts like Specimen and Alien Sex Fiend being around the area - by that point Manchester's Joy Division were already collapsing following Ian Curtis' death - some of the earliers music to be described as "gothic" in the papers the scene was pretty much nationwide by 1982, by which point the term "gothic" had become entrenched in the NME and Melody Maker. By 84, we were at a peak, with bands like the Sisters releasing First and last and Always, along with the Cure, Siouxie and the Birthday Party/Nick Cave at a creative high.
And all that was before the bands you mentioned even formed...
By 1985, we were already seeing the first wave drift apart - by the time I was a minigoth in a backwater town in scotland in 1986, the scene was very definately not a "avant-garde group" or "a few underground clubs". By then a second wave of electro bands were coming in - the re-vamped Sisters defining the decade for many of us with Floodland, (plus the Mish were touring, followed by the hordes of eskimos ( Eskimooooooo! ), while on 4AD records Xymox - Clan of Xymox, Dead Can Dance, Coceateu Twins, the 'Neph, and the likes were making the rise in '88, and we were, if not mainstream, then certainly the leading edge of the indie scene for a while... all long before "bloodlettting" was released.... and for that matter on a entirely different continent, were the scene really started.
Now, what was that about "People like you always like to something was popular several years before it was just because they can reference a few undergound clubs in a couple of cities"....?

Edited by: Donatien de''Sade on 01/09/2006 17:37:05 I think this may have more to do with the trans-atlantic 'thing' rather than right/wrong.
The first punk stuff started around 1975 and pretty much fizzled out by the mid 80s when the dance scene developed (UK). Punk in USA has been pretty continuous since 75 and became mainstream around the mid 90s.
Goth started up about 1978/9 but became most popular(identifiable as 'Goth') in the early/mid 80s, it was largely associated with the punk movement before then.
Eg:
A gig 23rd December at Klub Foot London: UK Decay, Sisters of Mercy, Blood and Roses.
A gig on December 26th 1982 at Lyceum London: Sex Gang Children, Vibrators, Sisters of Mercy, Ritual, Alien Sex Fiend, Under two Flags
These were mainly watched by punks, goths at the time were called (ok it might surprise you) 'positive' punks.
Edit: bah, beaten to it by Taihira

Ya part of this is where in the world you live.
But its also just what exactly something like "punk" means, is it really built around the music or is the music derived from it. Sort of "scene" vs "culture".
Wherever you went - here you are.

Well you know I figured they're overly dramatic and all that so they'd try to keep themselves standing out when compared to all the other people who eat pills and jump from buildings. Having a black eyeliner doesn't help much to show who you are if you're laying on the street face down with no face. But if people saw the bicycle in their stommach they'd be like "wow, what an emo drama queen, respect".
