I've heard very mixed answers for what effects the chance of wrecking hits, and I'm sure I'll get mixed responses to this post as well, but hopefully some kind of concensus can be reached.
Seems the general answer is that it's a set 1% chance, but it would seem logical that tracking would effect it somehow. Sometime I'll get around to testing it, seeing wrecking hit chance with normal tracking and then with tracking computers, but perhaps someone already has tested it or knows the answer from experience. ------------------------- I hate everyone, except you. |

Yeah, I did, went back maybe 5-7 pages, didn't see anything specific. If it was a very old post it could be difficult to find. ------------------------- I hate everyone, except you. |

neither high tracking guns nor heavy painted targets have ever seemed to increase the occurance of wreckings from what i've seen.
You will improve all your other hits but i'm pretty sure its a set 'shot in the dark' %age.... and i'd guess probly more than 1% (but not alot) from what i've seen in my logs
as long as the gun hits, it has a set chance to wreck. just from my experience, no fancy graphs and equations for ya, sry

Wrecking hits seem to be at random...
but, I recall a few instances where I got two within one volley on my Thorax. Five Heavy Ion Blaster IIs with Antimatter... two of them hit for 468 something, and the rest hit for 120-150. For that one volley, it was over 1200hp of damage just from guns alone! \o/

Wreckings are a fixed chance and totally random. Not at all affected by tracking or sig. Tracking does increase the chance for well aimed and excellent shots, but not at all for wreckings. --------- ZOMG my sig was concordokkened! Link removed due to bad language on remote site. -wystler

Signature appears to... at least it did when we were shooting sharkbait's invincible pod... he raised the sig to like that of a titan and everyone starting getting great hits and more wreckings... probably just raises the chances... not sure what the equation looks like.

Nothing effects wrecking shots, nothing.
I've got wrecking shots at 100km with 250 rails and AM ammo before, and I shouldn't even hit (was pulling).
All those goodies do effect excellent shots and below, though. "Maya Rkell is my online stalker." |

While engagin a crow in my autocannon Jaguar a month or so ago, i scored several wrecking shots in a row. It was either miss or wrecking. The crow was mwd:ing past me. So i'm not sure about it being a fixed number.

Tracking and tracking related effects (speed, sig radius, etc etc) definitely do increase the quality of your hits. The empyrical evidence is all there. Here's a simple test:
Fit your frigate of choice with a poor tracking weapon of your choice, and 2-3 webs.
Find some NPCs that move pretty fast. Turn one gun on, and watch the quality of your hits. Depending on your skills and the exact weapon/NPC, you'll find a fair variety of hits.
Now, multi web your opponent so his speed is almost zero (you might want to use low damage ammo for this so you dont just pop your target :P ). Watch the quality of your hits. You'll see a lot of well aimed and excellent hits, and if you both long enough, you'll see a substantial increase in wrecking shots.
I did this with a Rifter with 250mm arty and 2 fleeting webs, through level 3 complexes over the course of three days, a few months back. Formulae aside, the evidence is undeniable.

When I recently tested it with my 1200mm Mach, I got a tremendous increase in hit quality from activating dual shadow serp tracking comps. But the percentage of wrecking hits stayed the same. Maybe I need to test it with a bigger sample size, but I think other tests in the past also suggested that wreckings are fixed and totally random. I also heard that a wrecker is ALWAYS a hit, regardless of how low the odds for a hit are, so in theory you would be able to hit a frigate at orbiting you with 500 m/s at 1000m with a 1400mm if you scored a wrecking shot. This could well be a myth, but it would explain the 'wreck or miss' scenario. --------- ZOMG my sig was concordokkened! Link removed due to bad language on remote site. -wystler

I'm pretty sure tracking must impact it, otherwise you could be MWD'ing around a target with 1400mm and hitting nothing for ages - then bam, wrecking shot.
Does that actually happen?

as someone said i did hit with wreking shot thing that where outside the optimal + 2 x falloff from far (lets say hit a frig a 160km with 250 and antimmater ) So one thing is sure it doesnt matter if the shot is suposed to land or nnot. For me its a 1/100 chance to make a wreking so yes the case orbit at 500m/s at 1km and being hit by a 1400 should occur

The people here talking about 1/100 chance of a wrekcing are clearly ignoring evidence and/or have never tested it.
Whilst it is possible that wrecking hits are based off of an exclusive mechanic and tracking only affects light through excellent chances - I can't say I've taken a large enough sample to really see the effects of wreckings - there's definitely a tracking mechanic for hit quality in general, and I really can't see wreckings being based off a different mechanic than everything else.

I thoght the original "wrecking shot chance" thread in 2004, said that wrecking was purely random?

Going thru the patches notes a while abck (the old old ones, in 04) I found one which said something like;
"the chance to get a wreaking is now 1/100 of shots that hit" - meaning you cant pop a frig orbiting you at 500ms by shooting 100 times and getting a wreaking ;)
can't seem too find it agian tho ;/

That'd make more sense.
I'm sure I wreck more often against static structures than moving ships, though...

Anyone care to test i'll get a 1400 on my phoon and someone can fly round me till i hit them.
Some how i think you can only get a wrecking shot with 1 out of every 100 hits rather 100 shots otherwise my autocannons would vapourise frigates that were well out of range when i turn them on and forget about them.

Perhapse the 'Wrecking Hit' is simply a modifier applied to 'Excellent' shots, either randomly or via some obscure formula.
Using your example above, once the webbed target starts taking more Excellent hits, the statistical probability of Wrecking shots would have to increase as well.
I would have to agree though that Wrecks just seem to happen more often vs an immobilized target.
[Edit] Cause i dont spell to gud.

In the old days you'd get a wrecking hit every 100 or 300 shot or something. Back then it was based off a completely different mechanic than tracking. Funny enough, a wrecking also meant you hit, even if the target was a few hundred kilometers outside your optimal range.

guns hitting way outside their supposed max range was a know issue a while back.
