This is a competition to develop a completely original out of game corporate logo / theme, artwork and media packet for Body Count Inc. The images of the winning artist will be used in everything from future MC videos to website content to coffee mugs to t-shirts and jackets.
While BDCI and the MC has some outstanding creative talent, I would like to see what the greater EVE community can come up with as well. This competition will be open to all members of the EVE community, so it is still possible that a member of MC might win.
A bit of info:
BDCI is a very different kind of corp. Our motto is, ôThis corp is a family. You cannot break us.ö (You do not have to use this.) Entry into BDCI is limited to no more than two applicants a month. Even then, not everyone makes it. Each æpotentialÆ undergoes a very rigorous form of Q&A in order to ensure their possible future compatibility in the corp. Once in, most of us are on a RL first name basis.
BDCI is widely considered to be one of the first ôtrueö mercenary corps in EVE. Our style of play is unique and we strive to keep our conduct as mature and professional as possible.
What I want from all of you artists out there are thematic examples of how you æseeÆ BDCI / MC. When you hear about the corp, read our posts or watch our videos, what comes to mind? Do you see us as ruthless? Honorable? Murdering bastards? Miners with Dreadnaughts (<--FRICK CEO!)?
All jokes aside, for a project like this, I am not interested in ôgoodö. I want the best, most awesome and eye catching efforts possible. I want corp banners, logos, etcà If I need to take something to a printer to get a dozen T-shirts with one of the logos run off, I want to have the proper formats and sizes to do that.
Maybe your idea will be stark, yet simple and elegant. Maybe it will be a visual assault on the senses. Both ways work well, but there will only be one winner of this competition. There is no second place, so take that as a challenge.
To clarify û the winner of this competition will receive a minimum reward of 500 million ISK for his or her efforts.
I do not expect this to happen overnight. Myself and my corp will watch this thread develop and, as things move along, we'll comment and make suggestions if something catches our eye. If you have questions, feel free to ask.
If a few weeks go by and nothing feels "right" to us, then we will re-evaluate if taking this venture public is the right course of action.
Thanks for your time and we look forward to seeing what you can come up with! -

I would be interested. I'll have a think and see what I can come up with - in my eyes, BDCI/MC are certainly a corp to be respected. .

Definately sounds like a good graphic design challenge.
Could I suggest that for something of this degree of complexity a link is given to any in-game public channel you have?
I, (and I'm sure a few others who may be interested) would probably appreciate some interaction to begin to develop an understanding of the tastes and attitudes the corp as a whole have, to better tailor results of the design exercise for such a tender to you as a client.

I'll look into this later today. Short of an ingame channel, I may set aside a section of the BDCI forums for this. -

give more info please. i'm not a graphic design student i only draw in my spare time so i don't really know what a 'media packet' consists of precisely. of course it will include a logo but would entrants also have to design a web page- some video or whatever, etc.
also please provide links to relevant forum threads so the people who dont know much about mercenary coalition(e.g. me) can know more and be able to make something more relevant then, say, a logo consisting of a bunch of ships with floral print skins.
will still draw sigs 4 isk click here |

I haven't done many logos, but considering the prize money involved I'll certainly give this a good try and give it my best.
I'll try to put some things together this week, and gather some ideas and inspiration from other corporation logos.

Thanks for holding this competition Seleene. I'm up for the challenge. I will post a link to my entry here when I have something ready.
Just a suggestion: defining the image sizes, formats, etc. that you want may help potential entrants who may not know what to put in a media packet. It will also allow you to judge the entries in direct comparison. --------------

Edited by: Mirage Kisaragi on 05/09/2006 16:49:57 Here's just one example of a rough draft I've come up with so far, but it's far from being a final product.
It's a clean and professional looking icon, that will if chosen be placed somewhere on the banner. Is BDCI looking for this kind of style, or more of a grungy, tech, or abstract look? Possibly more curves on the icon, or more detail in interfacing?
Also, can you please provide me with a contact to show my works to for approval/changes. This will be a process involving a lot of rough drafts and experimentations before I can come up with something your corporation/alliance is very pleased with.

I thought this is what the challange was asking of you. With all due respect, anyone is going to be able to finally come up with an idea if they have constant interaction with the client where as we are being asked to provide the ideas. ------------------------------------

What utter nonsense. To use analogy, it would be like going into a car garage, and talling the poor salesman "I'd like a car" and expecting the man to give you the right car for your needs based on that information. 2-seater? 4 seats? peope carrier? estate? convertible? perhaps a sports car? ferrari? maybe a lada? what about colour? what about the engine? and so on.
To produce the content for such a design competition, I would expect to produce renders, linework, page mockups, conceptual samples, master images for forums, sigfiles, websites and other media, plus highres versions for print media, and a mass of other content. I'd expect to know exactly what media they're needing, and their process. I'm not going to do that if I have no idea what direction they want, because I want my initial ideas to be looked at and dismissed, or given greenlight as a possible contender before I go further. if they want something completely different, without any reference to other groups, then fine, I'll do my best to think up something new. but if they really want something that's "dark and industrial" for example, then I know to focus my design work in that direaction and miss out "bright and anime" as a design consideration.
If I were sent a brief for a paying client, to put up to tender for a commission so vague, with no opportunity to learn the identity the client wishes to project -and let's make no mistake, this is a corporate identity and graphic design exercise, as much as any real-world client - then I'd not even bother to invest my business' time in the competition phase without access to tht information.

What utter nonsense. To use analogy, it would be like going into a car garage, and telling the poor salesman "I'd like a car" and expecting the man to give you the perfect car for your needs based on that information alone. 2-seater? 4 seats? peope carrier? estate? convertible? perhaps a sports car? ferrari? maybe a lada? what about colour? what about the engine? and so on.
To produce the winning content for such a design competition, I would expect - at minimum to produce renders, linework, page mockups, conceptual samples, master images for forums, sigfiles, and websites, plus video footage, and highres versions of art assets for print media, and a mass of other content. I'd expect to know exactly what media they're needing, and their process. I'd expect to gain exact technical specs for much of what they're producing, or expect it to be part of the design process with resultant reward. Particularly "media packages". print media. CD-rom? e-business card given out in events? the list requires liasion, and that's either a case of communication, or blind luck getting the perfect peice. I'm not going to make blind shots for that "perfect peice" if I have no idea what direction they want, because I want my initial ideas to be looked at and dismissed, or given greenlight as a possible contender before I go further. if they want something completely different, without any reference to other groups, then fine, I'll do my best to think up something new. but if they really want something that's "dark and industrial" for example, then I know to focus my design work in that direaction and miss out "bright and anime" as a design consideration. (as extremes of example)

Some good questions have been raised in this thread so far and I'll update my original post later today with some specifics as to what exactly I'm looking for in terms of product.
In terms of content, however, let your imaginations run wild. I would prefer to see what an outside source can think of with minimal guidance first. Consider this to be an audition as an advertising agency.
What would catch your eye? What would interest you in wanting to take the next step to contact BDCI or the MC about our services? What would make you go, "Holy ****, that's cool!" ?
Suze'Rain, you sound like someone who has some experience in this area. Your car analogy was a good one. However, you already have the answers to some of those questions (who we are and what we represent) in my initial post. Those questions that you are still vague on can probably be cleared up fairly quickly with a little bit of forum whoring or shooting me a few direct questions over our website.
What I'm asking for is ideas / artwork for everything from coffee mugs to t-shirts to even an E-ON advert.
All I can tell everyone is that I'm not after any particular theme...yet. Hell, the guy who puts flowers on ships could do an entire ad campaign based upon, "Lose a loved one? Don't send flowers to the funeral. Send Dreadnaughts to the killer's house." or something like!
