I use to work for a news station. I got this email just after lunch.
This is directly from news wires. Its nearly amost always correct.

The flamboyant 44-year-old crocodile expert is believed to have
been killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest .. while
he was filming an underwater documentary off Port Douglas.
His body is being flown to Cairns.

Cradle Mountain in Tasmania .. and has yet to be told of her
husband's death.
Mr IRWIN is also survived by two young children.

enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry .. Crikey!
His Crocodile Hunter program was first broadcast in 1992 and has
been shown around the world on the cable network Discovery Chennel.
Mr IRWIN has also starred in movies .. and developed the
Australia Zoo wildlife park .. north of Brisbane .. which was
started by his parents Bob and Lyn Irwin.

Foreign Minister ALEXANDER DOWNER .. who used a photograph of
his family at Australia Zoo for his official Christmas card last
year .. has praised Mr IRWIN for his work in promoting Australia.
A spokesman says Mr DOWNER knew Mr IRWIN .. who was heavily
involved in last year's "G'Day LA" campaign .. and was very
appreciative of all the work he did to promote Australia overseas.

The Queensland Ambulance Service says a call was received about
11am (AEST) and an emergency services helicopter was flown to Mr
IRWIN's boat on Batton Reef .. with a doctor and paramedic on
board.
Mr IRWIN had a puncture wound to the left side of his chest ..
and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The IRWINS have two children .. an eight-year-old a daughter ..
BINDI SUE .. and a three-year-old son .. ROBERT CLARENCE .. usually
known as BOB.
Young BOB was involved in a controversial incident with his
father in January 2004 .. when STEVE dangled him near a crocodile
at Australia Zoo.
Mr IRWIN carried his infant son in one arm .. while feeding a
dead chicken carcass to a crocodile with the other hand.
Child welfare and animal rights groups criticised his actions as
irresponsible and tantamount to child abuse.
But Mr IRWIN said .. he was in complete control of the
situation.

That's sad, he made wildlife documentaries not only informative but funny as hell with that over the top aussie accent.

Going to miss him. :( I always loved watching his documentary on animals. No one makes animals interesting than he do. Especially the close encounter of some dangerous wild animals.
At least he died working on animals for his passion rather than some accident like car crashes. Preferrly, I'd rather see him die by crocs over stingray. Being killed by a stingray is probably the worst and most unexpected ever. ;\
I or we maybe, could probably could consider him an legend.
R.I.P Steve Irwin. And my biggest condolences to his family and close friends. We'll always love his work.
Am gonna miss his "Crikey" and "Look at this beauty" line

Good riddance imo.
His show sucked and was nothing more than an ego stroke. He was never very respectful of the animals he was filming and it is only fitting that he suffered the consequences.
TV just got less crap imo.

I heard about this at the end of my shift about an hour ago, was kinda funny...all the opening people at work plus the overnight people that were just getting off were crowded around the tv..:P but anyways...they said on CNN that Steve said at one time that when he did go he wanted the cameras to be rolling...so at least he got that wish.

Another opinion I would like to express, is that of disgust at the people who have said 'good riddance' etc.
YES Steve Irwin was one of the most annoying people on Earth, YES Steve Irwin was a complete looney, but he was also VERY passionate about what he did - you only had to listen to him for 5 minutes to know he LOVED doing what he did etc - if everyone was that passionate about the things they do, then the world would be a better place - so please, don't flame him, he deserves a good send-off.
