... Riiight.
Originally by: Shigsy I can understand joking about it a few weeks or a month after he dies, but a few hours, that's just uncalled for. Im sure you'd like people to make jokes about it after you die, but think about your family and friends aswell.
It was just a light hearted joke, he clearly wasn't meaning to offend anyone. Being able to take sad news and still smile and make a joke about is not equal to being disrepectful.

I've posted thoughts in another thread but, this one looks a bit more "official". I've sen alot of remarks that I share. Never realizing how much of a fan until now.....He died doing what he enjoyed.....etc.
Steve Irwin was a man among men. No matter how many times you watched his programs and then made a joke about him "being a lunatic" or whatever you could say, you, or I at least, was always left with a sense of respect and admiration for him and his work.
Several times in the past I've heard about how he donated money for protection of various species of animals. Also how alot of his programs "Ten most deadliest snakes" etc...were more of a way to publicize the annimals in an attempt to get the public to understand them.
He put his heart into his work. I remember seeing "Irwin wannabees" and thinking to myself "This guy just wants the publicity of saying he did it, he's so fake." I've read on a thread where he was filming the stingrays for public understanding and awareness as well....
I suppose when you put it in the context of, "The man died while trying to protect the very animal that killed him." You, no matter what your past views are, have to be left with some sense of respect and allow the man dignity in his passing.
Rest in peace Steve Irwin. |

Does anyone else find that death is a really strange thing - Steve Irwin is definitely dead, but i almost feel like it is untrue, that he's still there somewhere, and that lots of people just made a mistake. I felt the same way about my cats when they died.
I don't like death - it's a bit... weird.

Hang on just a damn minute. Steve Irwin was a funny guy, a good tv presenter and all but your giving him way more credit than he deserves. For the most part when watching his shows I was appalled at the way he treated animals. He teased and many times from the animals point of view was a serious threat. I am a scuba diving instructor and have dived with stingray and fed them etc.. so to quote wikipedia: "Dasyatids generally do not attack aggressively, or even actively defend themselves. When threatened, their primary reaction is to swim away. However, when they are attacked by predators or stepped on, the barbed stinger in their tail is mechanically whipped up" Whenever I have dived with them they have been awsome creatures that interacted with me by taking food from me. If you are gentle and slow moving they will interact. If your an ass they will swim away.
Steve was a lovable character with his heart in the right place, but he was also an idiot too. He certainly is not the saint your painting him out to be! ---------------------------

The camera crew were supposed to always film him, even if he looks as though he's going to die - like the time he had minutes to live, and got the antiserum just in time. So maybe they filmed him being killed - we could then see exactly what he did to the ray.
RIP Steve

He was a cool guy, its a sad shame. I have to say though when I've been diving in the carribean sea I've seen loads of rays' and they are always intimidated and swim away or try and hide in the sand, I think its rather odd how this happened. I wonder if he was trying to ride one perhaps..
The people coming out with those really tasteless jokes about his death should be ashamed, show some damn respect for goodness sake. -----------------------

I am almost convinced, based on personal experience, this is the case. The guy was a prat most of the time around animals.

I am niether ashamed, and I am not showing any disrespect. I will continue to make "tastless" jokes at the expense of the less fortunate. That is how its always been and how it always will be. Thats called comedy. If you do not find it funny then dont laugh. Move on, stop trying to make me "feel bad" cos, I will not! I will just giggle like a silly little boy ---------------------------

Steve Irwin was a legend among legends. When I first heard the news he was dead, i wanted to deny it badly. When he died, a part of my childhood died. I grew up watching him on the discovery channle. Many condolences to his family, especially his children. RIP Steve, you will forever be missed. _____________________________________ Stressed out with empire politics?

Very very sad to hear about his death. Sucks big time.
To answer some of the questions I've seen:
Deaths from sting rays are excedingly rare, before his death there have been only about 12-17 (depending on which expert you ask) deaths by stingray ever reported.
Apparently local authorities have examined the video of his death, he was not provoking the sting ray in any way, he was not trying to ride it either. He was floating near the ray simply looking at it. Experts say that the camera man was in front of the sting ray and he was next to it on it's right(?) side. The ray probably saw the camera man ahead of it and Steve at it's side and felt cornered and that's why it struck.
Always been a big big fan of his... I'll miss him and his show greatly. -------------------

Steve was a lovable character with his heart in the right place, but he was also an idiot too. He certainly is not the saint your painting him out to be!
For the record, it's been said (though I don't exactly remember where) that Irwin accidentally swam over the ray, and the camera man was in front of it. Thus accidentally boxing the animal in. It couldn't swim away, so it struck with it's stinger out of self defense. I have watched his shows for many years and I have not once seen him mistreat any animal. Unless of course you see handling the animals as 'mistreatment', he was extremely respectful to every creature that he came across. I even distinctly remember a clip where he was bitten by a poisonous snake and made sure that someone had moved the snake as he had found it in the road (don't quote me on that, as it was a long time ago that I saw the clip). He has done MANY great things from animals as he truely loved every single creature on this planet.
And bravely confronting your fears and taking risks to achieve something that you LOVE doing does NOT make you an idiot. I wish there were more people like him, and I wish the rest of us could enjoy the world and our lives as much as he quite clearly did.
Do not even suggest that his death was somehow his fault, it was an accident in which he was very very unlucky. He wasn't bothering the ray, he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Rest in Peace, Steve Irwin. "See ya later, mate."
