This is true... It was actually recorded by wikipedia before anywhere else... before even ABC / CNN online got to it.
He was barbed through the chest by the stingray. Died instantly.
Wakcy guy, but had a lot of passion and enjoyment for his job. Much respect. At least he died doing his what he loved to do best, that being messing with dangerous animals... and didn't die choking on a ******* pretzel or some ****nit.
His antics and personality will be missed.

Sad day indeed.
Steve Irwin made appreciating nature funny, and he expressed this through his work with various animals, especially the crocodile. His show was always amusing and his catchy catch phrases and words could only come from Steve Irwin.
There will never be another one like him, he'll be missed.

RIP Steve... I've never had a single "celebrity" death really hit me...but this one does. He wasn't a celebrity, he was a normal person out doing what he loved and believed in, no matter how crazy he looked to some people. Just think the number of lives he has saved, both human and animals. The entire planet is worse off now that he is gone. Not many people can have the effect, but he did.

he died doing what he loved, who else can ask for more. especially in that kind of field. Some of the stuff he did was awesome, like just plunging his hand down holes to grab snakes and letting black mambas sit right next to his face and stuff. At least it was a quick death and not the kind you can get from some poisons.

A little story.
I first learned about the Croc Hunter when from my Latin teacher; Salve, if you're playing. He was a HUGE fan. His brother worked at the Desert Museum here in Tucson as a biologist of some sort. Anyway, he found out that the Hunter was coming to town because we're knee deep in venomous snakes (but they don't get on our planes), aka Rattlers (they're more than just a ship). Long story short, he got to have lunch with him. How cool is that?
But on to the good part of the story. The Hunter was in town for a quick shoot, and wanted some Rattlers to put on camera. Nobody at the Desert Museum (our local research station, sort of like a zoo) knew where to find them in the wild. So Steve goes out and within about 5 minutes he finds a nest of them. Every one of the scientists at the Museum was like, "WTF??????" Nobody had every just walked off and found a nest before. But the Hunter did it without looking back. That's just the sort of man he was. A god among hepetologists. Sure, he was a wise-ass on-screen, but he knew his stuff like most people can only dream. Mock him all you want, but few people can even comprehend the respect and understanding of reptiles that he had.
A true loss for everyone, not just fans.

Going to miss him. :( I always loved watching his documentary on animals. No one makes animals interesting than he do. Especially the close encounter of some dangerous wild animals.
At least he died working on animals for his passion rather than some accident like car crashes. Preferrly, I'd rather see him die by crocs over stingray. Being killed by a stingray is probably the worst and most unexpected ever. ;\
I or we maybe, could probably could consider him an legend.

Another opinion I would like to express, is that of disgust at the people who have said 'good riddance' etc.
YES Steve Irwin was one of the most annoying people on Earth, YES Steve Irwin was a complete looney, but he was also VERY passionate about what he did - you only had to listen to him for 5 minutes to know he LOVED doing what he did etc - if everyone was that passionate about the things they do, then the world would be a better place - so please, don't flame him, he deserves a good send-off.

Steve Irwin was a great man, despite his seemingly whacky approach to hosting his shows.
Great bloke, who will be sorely missed.

I used to love Irwin's show when it was still on, and he was always great in his other TV appearances. It was especially funny when he would go on Jay Leno's show. Hearing about his death made me genuinely sad.

I read an interview with him once where he said that he hoped he wouldn't be killed by an animal when making his show, as he didn't want to give some people the satisfaction of being able to say they knew he'd get done by an animal one day.
Sadly it happened.
I've never been into this style of nature show but I have to admit I never turned the TV over when he was on.

Sad truth. Read it at work today on google news and could not believe it. Had to check again to make sure it's true. Thats very sad. This man is known all over the globe, loved nature and did a great job making people aware about fauna. You could see even through the TV screen how passioante he was. May he rest in peace. I've posted thoughts in another thread but, this one looks a bit more "official". I've sen alot of remarks that I share. Never realizing how much of a fan until now.....He died doing what he enjoyed.....etc.
Steve Irwin was a man among men. No matter how many times you watched his programs and then made a joke about him "being a lunatic" or whatever you could say, you, or I at least, was always left with a sense of respect and admiration for him and his work.
Several times in the past I've heard about how he donated money for protection of various species of animals. Also how alot of his programs "Ten most deadliest snakes" etc...were more of a way to publicize the annimals in an attempt to get the public to understand them.
He put his heart into his work. I remember seeing "Irwin wannabees" and thinking to myself "This guy just wants the publicity of saying he did it, he's so fake." I've read on a thread where he was filming the stingrays for public understanding and awareness as well....
I suppose when you put it in the context of, "The man died while trying to protect the very animal that killed him." You, no matter what your past views are, have to be left with some sense of respect and allow the man dignity in his passing.
Rest in peace Steve Irwin. |

Hang on just a damn minute. Steve Irwin was a funny guy, a good tv presenter and all but your giving him way more credit than he deserves. For the most part when watching his shows I was appalled at the way he treated animals. He teased and many times from the animals point of view was a serious threat. I am a scuba diving instructor and have dived with stingray and fed them etc.. so to quote wikipedia: "Dasyatids generally do not attack aggressively, or even actively defend themselves. When threatened, their primary reaction is to swim away. However, when they are attacked by predators or stepped on, the barbed stinger in their tail is mechanically whipped up" Whenever I have dived with them they have been awsome creatures that interacted with me by taking food from me. If you are gentle and slow moving they will interact. If your an ass they will swim away.
Steve was a lovable character with his heart in the right place, but he was also an idiot too. He certainly is not the saint your painting him out to be! ---------------------------

The camera crew were supposed to always film him, even if he looks as though he's going to die - like the time he had minutes to live, and got the antiserum just in time. So maybe they filmed him being killed - we could then see exactly what he did to the ray.

Steve Irwin was a legend among legends. When I first heard the news he was dead, i wanted to deny it badly. When he died, a part of my childhood died. I grew up watching him on the discovery channle. Many condolences to his family, especially his children. RIP Steve, you will forever be missed. _____________________________________ Stressed out with empire politics?

Very very sad to hear about his death. Sucks big time.
To answer some of the questions I've seen:
Deaths from sting rays are excedingly rare, before his death there have been only about 12-17 (depending on which expert you ask) deaths by stingray ever reported.
Apparently local authorities have examined the video of his death, he was not provoking the sting ray in any way, he was not trying to ride it either. He was floating near the ray simply looking at it. Experts say that the camera man was in front of the sting ray and he was next to it on it's right(?) side. The ray probably saw the camera man ahead of it and Steve at it's side and felt cornered and that's why it struck.
Always been a big big fan of his... I'll miss him and his show greatly. -------------------

Originally by: Dumus Edited by: Dumus on 05/09/2006 08:54:53 Hang on just a damn minute.
For the record, it's been said (though I don't exactly remember where) that Irwin accidentally swam over the ray, and the camera man was in front of it. Thus accidentally boxing the animal in. It couldn't swim away, so it struck with it's stinger out of self defense. I have watched his shows for many years and I have not once seen him mistreat any animal. Unless of course you see handling the animals as 'mistreatment', he was extremely respectful to every creature that he came across. I even distinctly remember a clip where he was bitten by a poisonous snake and made sure that someone had moved the snake as he had found it in the road (don't quote me on that, as it was a long time ago that I saw the clip). He has done MANY great things from animals as he truely loved every single creature on this planet.
And bravely confronting your fears and taking risks to achieve something that you LOVE doing does NOT make you an idiot. I wish there were more people like him, and I wish the rest of us could enjoy the world and our lives as much as he quite clearly did.
Do not even suggest that his death was somehow his fault, it was an accident in which he was very very unlucky. He wasn't bothering the ray, he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Rest in Peace, Steve Irwin. "See ya later, mate."

Excuse me? I don't troll, nor do I 'like my peen stroked by others' I came here to add my thoughts about the death of someone who I really looked up to. I'm sorry if I found what you said to be disrespectful, and I must have missed the 'RIP Steve' part. I'll take down the 'edit' of my last post. What I said to you was over stepping the mark a bit and I apologise. Its just that I have been reading many forums and other comments about the death of Steve and there are so many people being disrespectful, and it really gets to me that some people can say things like that about ANYONE who has recently died.
Sorry if I jumped the gun with you, it was a 'straw that broke the camels back' moment.

EDIT: Just out of interest, where did you say 'RIP Steve'? Was it with another character? Because I can't find it in this thread anywhere.
In my original thread before the Mod locked it. I did not want it in this thread as I did think posting it here was disrespectful, as this was a condolence thread. But hey ho the mods thought better than me. Oh nooes I discussed moderation. ---------------------------

Edited by: Suze''Rain on 05/09/2006 23:14:23 While it is unquestionably a tragedy he's gone. that does'nt mean you can't laugh at his life, and celebrate his work and spirit.
I'm sure he himself would've been the first to take amusement at the irony of a death at the hands (tail?) of a creature generally considered not to be dangerous, after all the things he's done.
and though I'm not remotely religeous, I do have an image in my head....

I knew it would take someone like you to lower to tone of the thread to WoW standards. It just isn't funny to make a joke about a guy who just died leaving behind him a wife and 2 kids.
R.I.P Steve.
Because everyone found it funny except for you.
And that guy who thinks I should be permabanned.
Speak for ureself, Luigi is KOS now.
"If you laugh about the jokes, you knew Steve Irwin, even a little." This guy was so extravagant at what he did, and I regret the passing of a great TV-character.
Have a sense of humor, even morbid. It's not tasteless.
