About a week ago, I was feeling like trying something that didn't take too much preperation, and might have been fun! I had never stolen ore from a loot can before, so I decided to try it out. I warped to a belt, flipped the can, had my buddy pick it up in his indy, and we were off.
OH MY SWEET BUDDAH.....
I felt like Frankenstein in the old burning windmill. Everyone in local fitted their T2 pitchforks and started to camp the station we were docked in. A string of negativity began to pour in through local chat. I figured that I'd have it coming from my victim, maybe her corpmates too, but the backlash that I recieved in local was tremendous! I was called everything from a griefer to a coward to a Gallenteen school girl. EVERYONE wanted to fight me. Of course, I wasn't going to give them the pleasure of having a fair fight with me :) So I simply waited out my aggrotimer in my windmill, and logged off.
The villagers had threatend me with war decs up and down all over 54k isk worth of Veldspar. Yup, 54k's worth of isk. I was obviously not doing it for profit, I was doing it for kicks, and because I had never done it before. BUT THIS WAS OBVIOUSLY ENOUGH for a 2700 member alliance (I forgot what their name was) to threaten my 6 man strong windmill.
So I ask you, my peers (by peers I mean pirates, not carebears. I think it's obvious you furries want my windmill), is it GHETTO to steal a can of ore? I know a lot of people do it, but I've gotten less backlash from ransoming or destorying someone's BC! Would it be tacky or un-classy for pirates to take ore? Is there a differance between pirates and ore thiefs? What do you think?

The only thing lame about it, is how short the kill timer is, and how it doesn't flag you properly with the concord police. By all rights, in fed space.. loot someone elses can, and they should get at least a weeks chance to kill you without concord protecting you.

We do it all the time although not so often against actual players, more against the guys in newb corps, all the same age, in covetors and 1 hauler who can't reply or react because they can't speak English very well (it seems).
We grab our haulers and make a nice profit, last night we got around 50k from one of those OP's. It's free cash, it's a laugh and I don't like macro miners in "my" area.

To the OP: the reaction you recieved from those carebears is EXACTLY why I steal ore. There's no money in it. I just do it to make them cry.
Because I said so...

You are jetisoning it, hence you don't need it. Some ppl care for the environment. :) Plus ... you are playing a game, all this talk about fair, by all rights, you should be shoot, learn the game's mechanics and learn how to defend yourself. 2 days ago i lost an Incursus to a 2004 ocasional miner in a Covetor - ripped me appart with 5 Hobgoblins 2 and had a warp disruptor fitted.
PS: I did it in a Incursus once for kicks and the other guy came back in his ship of battle, Dominix with mining lasers. :)

Except in this case, they offered a "fair" fight, cant really see point in stealing some ore, in order to make some "carebear" (carebear who were willing to fight) , cry.
Nor shooting any ships, when obviously chance of profit are low, or nonexistent.
Ore thiefs, usually do what they do, for profit. those which u call "pirates", im not sure, it seems every hostile action are called piratism(except one protecting it own assets from obvious threat). When in piratism there should be a ¦obvious¦ chance of profit, and it is done for the profit.
So i would say, yes, there is a difference it would be "un-classy" for any pirate to do anything, if there is no profit in it. however, i do understand that the word "pirate" is used in various cases in this game.
Perhaps the "surprise PVP" would better describe most of the "pirates" than the word "pirate" itself :D

Don't let them war dec you, instead, you war dec them.
Thats what me and my friend did. We war decced the smacktalking alliance. 2 man corp vs an entire alliance. And we won
And if you don't win, oh well, you get to have some fun.

And if you REALLY want to annoy them, after you flip the can, destroy it instead of nicking the ore.

Plan it thats the best way to do it, after all it is only a game and the mechanics of the game set up are designed for people to do this. Go into the system, Make Instas for all the bases (or a couple anyway) make a couple of SS's and you can warp about freely if you have a couple of WCS's. They will get really annoyed with you and you could carry on doing it to do this. Its all about having fun not being a miserable git. However it IS likely you will die so don't smacktalk when you do.

Welcome to the world of Hi-Sec. I've been threatened to have multiple-thousand man alliances wardec me due to a battlecruiser / battleship kill with crappy loot. Its really, really funny ---------------------------

I must admit, I do this, but not for the same reasons.
Sure, they have a bit of ore, hardly worth anything, but the fun is in the fact that most come back in "battle" ready ships, which I then tear to shreds...
BS's, BC's and Cruisers, sometimes multiples of each.
Ransom the buggers... they come back in a ship or ships they think they can kick your arse with, you then just kill the small easy ones, leave the one big one, lock him down and ransom, do it all in local so the 100's of carebears can go "wtf, a ransom, here?!?!" collect the ransom, give the bugger a kick in the arse, and be on your way laughing a few mil richer.
Is especially funny when a 4 month old noob ore thief comes back in a Raven to kill you for taking his stolen ore, then you blow him apart in your Brutix and get lots and lots of very nice launchers

Why am I wanted? I've done nothing wrong, honest |

QFT, my alt mines in an apoc with a sensor booster, double fleeting webs, 7.5km scram, and a heavy nos. Never had any takers. They see the Apoc and the -sec/bounty and don't bother.

Come on down to low sec and steal some ore. I might not have kill rights on you after 15 minutes, but you're just as dead when you undock.

No, just as soon as it lets me lock you, you will be webbed/scramed. If you tried to leave in your hauler, it would die.
Hopefully they will fix the flagging system soon anyway, so those highsec miners get rights on your buddy too.

Warp scrambling is considered an aggressive act, the station's turrets would fry you in an instant. Besides, you wouldn't be able to lock me untill I started moving my ship or I turned on a mod. I'm feelin' rather cozy

Last guy that stole ore from me flew home in a pod. I was feeling generous, so didn't have him suddenly needing a new clone, and I'm just running a Retreiver with a few scout drones.
Same guy came back a few minutes later with some crap**** frigate and tried to beat the crap out of the Retreiver. He failed. He also failed to even dent the shields on my Iteron while I warped back and forwards and hauled my ore.
He warped out when I arrived in my Thorax...
Ore theives, in the most part, are the EVE version of tramps who mug other tramps for a thicker cardboard box.

"Warp scrambling is considered an aggressive act and the sentries would fry you in an instant." Yes, I am well aware that scrambling is an agressive act, but no, they wont fry me. Say i was in gallente space. A ferox with a good tank and thermal/kinetic hardeners, along with decent skills, would be able to tank the guns long enough to get a volley or two off. And depending on what you're flying, thats all i need.

LOL... Everyone likes to talk tough, but in my experience very very very few miners will actually fight back.. Maybe the folks that have posted here actually do defend their ore, who knows.. Never seen them around the areas I frequent.. Which really is a pity, cuz that's the only reason I've ever flipped cans - to provoke a fight.. Yet nobody ever takes, they all just scat out and then sit in a station and pout or complain on local (which I guess is still a consolation prize).. You can sit there by the can for the full 15 minutes waiting for them to organize a posse and come back, and still nothing.. And it's not even about easy kills on carebears, you can do it in a frigate against beefy ships and still they won't fight.. It's just depressing really..
Now don't get me wrong, ore theft is a vile, nasty, horrid, underhanded pastime that is the provenence of bullies and scum.. Thievery of all sorts just blows, but really it's not about the ore.. It's about looking for people with a spine.. Sadly most people who mine seem to be born without them.. They'd spend hours hacking away at a field only to have it all taken away from them, and they won't do ANYTHING?!!... How pathetic is that?..
There must be something about mining that slowly kills your soul.. CCP should ban mining..

Edited by: Devian 666 on 05/09/2006 22:25:00 Good work. All you need to do now is always have a hauler handy, whether a friend or alt, and you can make a lot of isk. It's easy to make 1-2.5m isk per hour in 1.0 to 0.8 space just tour from belt to belt if you pop a barge you'll get an extra 2-4m isk.
Don't forget to right click your inbox => settings and change the charge to convo you to 100k isk.
You can make a lot stealing the ore and you make more if you train in refining.
The only mistake you made after the aggro timer was logging off. You should have gone into the belts and sat beside their jet can so that you waste heaps of their time sitting a couple of bs beside you. If they smacktalk you make them shut down their mining op.
In reality I only steal ore so I can shoot down ships.
(edit) Oh yeah if you really want to get a reaction flip the can and shoot your can down.

lol I dunno. I guess it would take my flying a shuttle to get shotdown in a volley or two from a Ferox (assuming he's a bad ass.... which.... lmao!)
And even then, a shuttle in exchange for a Ferox? I'll take that trade in blows ANY day!
Don't argue with him... I don't remember who's sig said it, but I read once to "never argue with an idiot. They'll bring you down to your level and then beat you with experience."
