14 Day Trial Players:
- Must be on someone's buddy list in order to start a conversation with them
- Cannot trade with other players
- Cannot be invited into Corporations
- Cannot create a Corporation or assist in the creation of a Corporation
- Cannot purchase items from the market or from escrow
- Cannot list items for sale on the market
- Cannot send or receive eve-mail
- Cannot talk in chat channels
I took this from today's patch notes from Sony's EQ2 and modified it to be closer to Eve. Probably wouldn't all work but I think Sony's got a good thing going with this.

YEs, Sony does have a good thing going, it's called: "Lets drive away possible customers."
I'm sure CCP thanks them.
You could still transfer ISK even with those restrictions btw.

How about just restricting them from 'giving' and 'receiving' isk during their trial period?
This would apply to wallet and trade..
Thus making it much harder for them to sell isk?

Is ccp loosing money with the amount of players they have now? If so, they won't last. if not, they can affort to isolate the problem. block is certainly an option but once you use it, it's too late. That's a problem. They can sell all the isk they want, i don't care, I just don't want to see the spam in eve-mail or in the chat channels.

Should be limited to a trial corp in a trial channel. paying customers and isd people can come and go as they please in order to help them out and interact and all players can have the ability to invite them to personal chat channels but I think they should be disallowed a voice in the normal channels. Or maybe allow them into the channel but without the ability to speak in them. If you're ccp, do you want to irritate your paying customers or that one maybe customer that is more than half the time, up to no good for anyone?

How do they choose their spam victims?
I've gotten a grand total of two isk selling evemails in my two months of playing Eve (both from trade4game.com... Chinese outfit, though they listed their domain registration in Houston for some reason, possibly brain damage).
Err back on topic... do people really get so much isk selling spam that it's a serious bother?

Not smokin anything... I know it's apples and oranges and from the standpoint of Eve, the proposed limitations are indeed stupid. I give you that. I just posted it in order for people to contemplate it. ccp makes the calls anyhow. What Sony did could be a model. <shrugs>

They spam the common channels, aside from local and corp. And up until a couple days ago, I had nobody on my blocked list. Now I have 4 in the last 24 hours.

Oh yeah, there's no doubt that the problem is being dragged out by those people that just don't care to work for their isk. However, there will always be those people. The spammers are justified not from the people buying but because they have the ability to market their crap without fear of any loss.

I don't condone isk buying, but im going to play devil's advocate here.
It takes about a day to make 100mil isk ratting in 0.0 (bounties only). 100mil i think goes for $15 on ebay. So in that day, instead of wasting your time ratting, you could have been working on (as an example) a website to make yourself $500.
You have to look at why people are buying the isk. Gaming is appealing to lots of people now, some don't have the time to sit and stare at a computer screen for hours on end. This is where simply buying the isk appeals to people, especially those with JOBS.
Also, its not like the isk that is being purchased is being created out of thin air. The macro miners have to mine the ore and sell it to people in order to get the isk. The isk is just being moved around in the economy, which won't lead to mega-super-ultra-retarded inflation.

I know you're playing devils advocate here. I don't condone isk selling either, never bought it never sold it never had a desire to. I also work for a living.
People have been "buying x" for a long time. You can't stop it, it's going to happen. It's the marketing that is the problem. It is blatant spitting in the face of the eula. It's like these people look at the eula and laugh at the time and effort that was put into it. The rules that apply to everyone else don't apply to these people spamming the channels. Now if CCP wants to encourage this behavior then don't change anything. I don't believe that CCP is ignoring the problem, I believe they are taking measures to stop it. However, there will come a time when CCP will have to make a drastic choice because they can't have it both ways. Either allow it or not allow it. (and for clarity, I am not speaking of the buying and selling of isk but of the [marketing of the services])
These dirt bags have been around for a long time without their marketing practices infiltrating my entertainment.

I don't have a problem per se with ISK selling. However, macroers and people who try to make a living out of it are a real problem, because they effectively 'print money'.
I like what CCP has done with GTC selling and trading, and I think if people stuck to that system, and only bought GTCs from the vendors CCP sells to directly, macroers would wither out and die, leaving only people who want to play, not farm.
But this requires that people that want to get ISK stop buying it directly, or buying GTCs in eBay to save a few bucks. That's really the problem, as I see it.

CCP are making a profit now * i think just remove all trial accounts but thats a bit extreme but yes limiting them to 5-10 mails per day would be a good start Restrict them to civilian modules and ships (mmm not sure) Restrict them to high sec (good idea)
But really they need to block the main websites so if i am ISK seller a) sending a link to hte website in question for myh ill gotten gains it never arrives at the sender instead it goes straight to CCP devs who check it out and squash em
Players arent annoyed and their hair brain schemes are squashed

the point of the trial is to let people see as much as possible to make a decision.. if you make the game crappy for a trial, they arent going to want to buy it.
They do need to do something about those groups of 4 day old trial member cruiser pilots that like to gank indys in 1.0 space. Come on, u cant tell me someone that already has an account in EVE isnt running those.

Well, I might be tempted to forbid them advertising ingame their contract breaking service.
Change the way trials work. Allow them to communicate only after they send back an old style letter - or a symbolic 1USD test fee payable via CC. Send the letter out to them using the cheapest possible way.
Let's say for 15k USD for each offense.
The verification service could be a nice project for multiple online game companies. Linking it to a payment service could make life much easier for companies and customers if the service is good. --*=*=*--

Well, no matter how many measures you come up with to limit ISK selling on trial accounts, you can't do it AND retain a trial that's effective enough to actually test the game.
Hmmm, I wonder though, what if the trial account was designed to automatically give you a character that was roughly equivilant to one three months old? Equip it with a special class of "noob" type ship that can't be traded or recycled along with a choice of modules and then maybe you could impose heavy restrictions like no trading, no escrow purchase and no market use.
Still, isn't it better if there was simply enough GM's to monitor the activities of the trial accounts and if any extreme ISK transfers occur, they just take it away. Once enough people loose their cash to these idiots and don't get the ISK they've paid for then the market will dry up to very limited amounts... ************************************************

I had a couple of Eve mails last week, both offering me ISK for cash. Something like "100mil ISK for just $14.95!" (Damn, I sound like a salesman)
I just ignored the emails, but I kept them so I have their names. You see, my plan is simple. When I find them, I shall blow their ships to itty bitty peices, thus putting them off from spamming mine (and probably everyone elses) mailbox.
If everyone did this, they'd soon get the idea.

True, but flat-out impossible. We've been working on that angle in the IRL drugs trade for a hundred years; it does not work. The USA tried it on alcohol in the 1920s; it didn't work then either. And it won't work on ISK sales. If there's a demand, there WILL be a supply. ________________________________________________

"can't play the game"?
alright, so the no corp, no direct player to player trade, fine, but allow them to use the market, and you need to talk in order to get help, in order to make friends. we have two people on trial at the moment who may be invited ot our corp once they get a full account, because they talked to us, they played the game along side us, and they seem alright,
and sending eve mail is part of the tutorial, so removing that ability is rather stupid too. ========================================== Iy |

Please do you really believe that you can stop it? Face it, the secondary markets are here to stay. You could make it harder to trade isk, but at the end of the day there will always be a way to do it, because it is too hard to seperate farmers from the general population.

To be honest I'd like to see trial accounts removed all togeather. The ultimate reason for trial accounts is to up the subs to EVE. From what I've seen recently this isn't to much of an issue anymore as we are seeing some massive influx of players from other games and dealing with server "growing pains" as it is.
Trial accounts have "exploit" stamped all over them just like multipal chars. per account. If you can't be troubled to pay to play a game or to try it out then to bad. There is a ton of stuff in this world you have to pay to try, no free rides to check it out, and this should be one of them.
CCP tryed to be nice and offer a service to its playerbase but the player base, being human, decided they would rather use this feature to molest/tamper/make RL $$/scam instead of its intended use.
Time to jetcan the trials and hose the multipal char per account while were at it, make people take responsibility for their actions.
That is all

Edited by: Ozawi on 07/09/2006 14:29:56 Maybe it's possible to have a discounted first month or somesuch.
Instead of a free trial, it'd be $4.95 for the first month. I don't see that being an unfair amount to try a game for 30 days, and the ISK sellers wouldn't be dumping $4.95 twenty times per day making new accounts to spam their services.
I personally just bought a new account paid up front to try EVE. If I can justify going out to the movies and paying $12 USD not knowing if the movie is going to be good or completely suck, I could drop $4.95 for the first month of a game to try it out.
And if you can afford a computer that'll run EVE and a good link (really, who uses dialup anymore?) - that $4.95 won't cause the sun to not rise, and make for your own personal Black Monday.

Really good idea

Take that argument to a court of law and see who's laughing then. It won't be you.

Court of law? Incase you didnt notice this is a game and the EULA says you only 'rent' your account and if CCP decides for whatever reason to close it, then tough luck for you.
Theres not a god damn thing you can do about it.
*sigh*

To be honest it will be next to impossible to stop these people. I just read that in China, people have set up whole companies that hire folks to farm MMORPGs so they can sell the isk/gold/ for real cash.
That said it would be easy to direct all your anger at the lowly isk farmer however, there would be no MMORPG farmers anywhere if there wasn't a large number of people willing to pay real money to get make believe money. So I guess my point is that the real problem is not the farmers but people who buy from them.

I took this from today's patch notes from Sony's EQ2 and modified it to be closer to Eve. Probably wouldn't all work but I think Sony's got a good thing going with this.
ISK sellers aren't the problem, they are opertunists and exist only because there are ISK buyers. Its the ISK buyers that should be the targets, not the sellers.

CCP could always try a few tactics, some of them would have to be covert to prevent people from figureing out work arounds.
An example
user1 signs in and makes a spam about selling, ccp finds out about it (petition or a GM hears it direct). By reviewing the logs (which could be fully automated), CCP determines that user1 used IP x.x.x.x. They also determined that in that 2 hours period, 50 other people were logged in at that same IP (the macro farm team, plus the real long term accounts that hold the isk). Or they could have every eve client generate (and keep local) a hidden random serial number. Then number would allow CCP to determine all the accounts that logged in at the same client.
At this point, they have the alts and primaries of the whole operation, ban or penalize as appropriate.
This is just one possible solution. The point is, if CCP really wants to commit some resouces to fight the problem, they could reduce it.
The problem would never really go away though. You could put some scammers out of business, but there will always be someone that thinks they can pull it off and will start
