Hey, guys!
We're thinking about having a friendly(ish) football match during Fanfest. Before we can nail this down, however, we need to know if we can get enough players to sign up for it. Let us know in the comments if you'd be interested in playing, and what you'd like to see in an event like this.
11 vs 11? Smaller scale? We're still very much open to ideas!

We used to have a staff vs pupils football match when I was at school. The staff used to kick the crap out of the pupil team - great fun for us spectators . If similar levels of violence are expected for the Fanfest match can you ensure its covered in the stream.

Streaming it may be hard since it will most likely take place on the Thursday, March 19th, and will be pretty far from the actual venue. We will look into it, though. We will at the very least record it, and show the highlights. This only happens, however, if we can validate the idea with interest through this thread

As someone that has filmed football matches before I'm more than willing to be flown out to Iceland at CCP's expense and use their kit to film the match to save the Eve TV guys the extra work and edit it down to a reasonable highlights package.
And no this isnt me trying to blag free tickets, accommodation and air fare to fanfest....
edit: yeah it totally is actually! |

Twice I've watched the mighty Scotland play and beat Icealnd in Iceland (Kevin Kyle even scored), so it would be a wonderful idea. alas moving fanfest to start of year means my attendance hasn't been possible (married with kids = march before I get out of the red) since.
I would even bring my 7 year old adidas Predators, although getting them through custom, due to their EXPLOSIVE shooting ability may make it difficult. , |

im down for a game of football ;) also willing not to be sent off within 10 mins as well. Could make this more fun as well by adding random things in as well ( mobile walls for free kicks, made from real bricks ) ext ect, half time pints and shots ;)

Sure you can. Give it a shot... it works for us Americans :)
I'd love to play, but for two things... I'm 20+ years beyond high school prime soccer-playing fitness, and I'm probably not going to fanfest.
Other than that, hell yeah, great idea!

Sounds fun, consider me signed up. Also at least 2 corpmates would like to participate as well.
If it's recorded, it would be fun to see a coach on each side yelling a bit. A CSM for the players? ... Hillmar for the devs? :D... even small PvD would be fun.
I find 5on5's on smaller sized fields a bit more personal and action packet. We can quickly change players like in icehockey to keep up the match speed and have more people participate. How ever you prefer, I'm looking forward to it.

I would so be good for this, indoor or outdoor. Football (American soccer) in the snow is pretty fun too in case nobody has tried it before.
I just need to know before hand so I can make sure to pack my cleats and goalie gloves, if anyone else more amazing in goal doesn't volunteer first. I used to be a pretty decent keeper, then I blew out 1 shoulder during a game, couple years later ended up tearing some ligaments in the other shoulder and had surgery, so not as good and quick as I was in my younger years but definitely hoping this happens as it could be a lot of fun.
I was thinking about trying to do some hiking, but then realized there might still be a lot of snow still around. So packing everything into a single carry on might be a bit more of a challenge now.
And I can get my brother to play too, occasionally I will sucker him into playing on my Friday night indoor league when we are going to be short on players or have no subs... shoot, almost forgot, game in 2 hours. Thanks for reminding me random dev video I just watched. |

Yes, bring cleats and whatever gear you need for a game! This goes for everyone that is interested! We will be making efforts to make sure that this reaches as many as possible before they arrive in Iceland so that we can have at least 20 players with gear ready to sign up on the opening day. We are hoping to have it full size with unlimited subs, but we will adapt depending on signups and general preference.

Not that I would need to really get another pair, I have half a dozen already.
Anyhoo I also thought, now maybe once this gets more developed, are we going to have a team color or t-shirts for each team? Cause playing with a rainbow of colors on the field becomes slightly taxing for those of us not so young people keep track of which team the rest of the people on field are on. |

One more thing, the indoor field, the turf, what kind is it? Or more what types of cleats/turf shoes do they allow or would you recommend? Like legit grass like turf or just green carpet or somewhere in between?
My local indoor field has some pretty awesome turf that we all use normal cleats on just fine as if we were on grass. But some indoor fields I've gone to don't allow cleats so I had to pick up some turf shoes. Good thing with the turf shoes is they easily double as normal shoes if I was running out of space to pack. |

We may need to have this on Tuesday that week. That would be March 17th(St Patrick's Day) from 8pm to 10pm. Any objections to that? Will anyone miss out due to not arriving before then?
Also, what are your thoughts regarding the size of the field, and number of players? Some seem to think that a full size game will require too much running, and a high fitness level. Personally I think with unlimited subs, and good formation based positioning, it won't be too bad.

The smaller the field and less players per side ... the more fitness required. I get much more tired playing 6 v 6 indoor then I do playing a full 11 v 11 game on a full size field. I think if we do a full game with plenty of subs it's a good compromise and there shouldn't be too much issue.
And of course our group of people have never played together before are going to be a tight disciplined formation... (actually if we're all soccer (football lol) players than it shouldn't be too hard to hold a basic formation, just don't expect any offsides traps or anything). |

Yes! We have a believer! I completely agree, and I think 11v11 will look more presentable. This will be in the news and stuff.
As to the team's coordination, perhaps we need someone to step forward as captain, and start an in-game chat channel. How about it, progodlegend? Rally the troops?

Sounds legit. I prepared in-game channel and maillist called "join the troops" for us. Also a player sign-up thread to organize the team. This does not make me captain or coach! Just trying to help on the organization here.
Sign-Up thread (of course inofficial): https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=5444308
I'll try my best to moderate them. If a CSM wants to get a hand on that - great!

This is awesome! We were planning on getting some blank shirts for the players team, but if someone wants to take charge there and print out something awesome, feel free to! Just have them on the lighter side, and also please let us know :)
As to referees, we'll be having 1 referee, and two linesmen.

I've always considered my indoor 7v7 (6v6 + goalie) on the smaller fields (about hockey rink size) to be much more fun and entertaining for everyone involved when compared to a full size 11v11 field. You have a lot of walking around and waiting for the ball to come anywhere near you, and in some cases even more running as you have to cover a larger distance. In my indoor games there can be a lot of slower parts where people are just walking around with the ball because the field is smaller and you don't have to run all the time when you are part of the play.
Just my 2 cents, I would prefer a smaller field with less people cause it allows a higher percentage of the people playing the game to actually participate and be a part of the game. I'll go for either but really like my 7v7 games. And with the 7v7, since you are more actively involved in nearly every play, you run more, but that doesn't mean you can't sub more often. I've been on teams that had 2-3 full lines of people, subbing everyone every 3-4 minutes to keep people fresh. |

I hope there's going to be uniforms. You should commission Rixx Javix to come up with something for the away team and have them professionally made with numbers and in-game names. Even if players have to buy their own jerseys to cover the expenses it'd be one hell of a souvenir.
EVE Bet may even be able to sponsor the player team to help with costs if CCP will allow us to reverse redeem PLEX for this purpose...?
I'm running for CSM X because I want to empower the community builders of New Eden and help make a richer social environment both in and out of game. I'll need your support.

I will be wearing mine My issue is that I always travel with just a carry-on. And between tripod, cleats, goalie gloves, and a camelbak, there will be very little room for necessities. And shinguards will take up too much space (as I would feel obligated to bring the standard thick/long soccer socks to go over them too, and tape). Since it is full field there will be a lot less frantic foot action and more just beat you to the ball type situations. Now if it were a small field faster paced 6v6 action like my usual league you bet your backside shinguards would be one of the first things into the bag. Also forgoing the padded goalie pants and jersey as well so here's to hoping turf burns are minimal.

What about when I am rubbing my studs down the front of his legs to distract him at corners
I would advise if you can bring them to try. In all seriousness, you never know what can happen when playing with and against people whose level you have no idea about.
It is also a good place to hide a pack of peanut M+M's for when you are quiet, true story I played with someone that regularly did this.

I do have a nice scar on the side of my leg from playing defense a few years back, but in that situation I was wearing guards and the stud just missed the edge and took a chunk out of the side of my leg. Taped it up and kept playing of course and man was that ever a fun wound to clean when I got home.
If I can fit them I will bring them, but I doubt I'll have the room.

Due to the logos we have for the players team the shirts will most likely be white or light grey. As an effort to look better as a team I'd encourage everyone to do their best in securing white shorts to match, as we'll only be providing the tops.
Perhaps this is something you guys can discuss with your team organizer :)

Just a little update. The most voted on name as I was getting the tops ready was Ballgorns. The wonderful logo was designed by Rixx Javix. It was only fitting that the players' team logo was designed by a player.
As the order had to be put in, I got a list of sizes from Jon, your wonderful team organizer. As such, it is a bit late to sign up, as there won't be any spare tops. If you are interested in playing feel free to be at the CCP office around 6pm, as there may be some last minute cancellations to free up a shirt. If that happens it would obviously be great to have stand ins.
The tops are white, so please try to acquire some white shorts or pants to match. It's not imperative, but would look a lot nicer if you guys didn't wear mismatched shorts/pants :)
Now, this is the important bit! PLEASE BE AT THE CCP OFFICE WELL BEFORE 7pm. I'll have a little signup sheet to get people in, and we'll leave as soon as all players are on board the bus, and this will preferably be before 7pm so we have some warmup time.
There will be other buses for more players, as well as buses for devs. We'll do our best to fill the stands!
If you can, please spread the word. The more players show up = the more fun we'll have!
ANNOUNCEMENT:
The players' team is being financially sponsored by our wonderful CCP Customer Support department. Bringing "customer support" to a whole new level. Spread the word on that as well, so the GMs can feel the love!

Oh yea, that was my thought too.. I hope there are no girls watching us! :D And no beer in the arena is a bad thing too, because to be drunk is always a good excuse if the performance is bad... :-)

Cheers Vil Yeah that should be fine. We're even thinking about getting transport for spectators, if there is demand for it :)
With this thread saying 'should be fine' and the newest one stating bus is full...my request for "wives" to join us on the players bus...this still OK/Accurate? If i understand correctly there is a players bus leaving at 1830 and a spectators bus leaving at 1900? |

i recommend you to get to the office in time and see wether you get a seat. if not, there will be others there and you can gang up and take a taxi - won't be too expensive i'd say. stay calm, gate is green.

Seek me out at the office around 18:30, and I'll figure something out. We only had a limited amount of seats for the bus, and needed signups to keep it civilized. We won't, however, leave the players' spouses behind :)

If you are sober after the game, I will be disappointed
But quite seriously, you will not be allowed to play if you appear intoxicated in anyway before the game. We do not want anybody getting injured and there is more than enough time after the game and during the week to get drunk.

So on the topic of football could any of the devs or previous fanfest attendees point me to a good bar that will be showing premier league matches over the weekend? Also I've sort of mucked up as I'm attending the blue lagoon party on the Sunday, I don't suppose blue lagoon will have any coverage of the Liverpool United match at 1330? Bit of a long shot on the Sunday mind but thought I'd ask |

Thanks again Puck for throwing this together.
My knees are still recovering and its looking like I didn't break my finger on one of the few half decent saves I managed to pull off. But I sure helped give a couple of devs some pretty impressive highlights on a few shots when I picked the wrong choice of the 2 I had available.
And hopefully the Deb with the short spikey gray hair isn't too upset for me taking him out right after I took over goal.
Sorta bummed the player jerseys didn't have names or numbers like the devs, and my bro didn't get one because we were a few minutes late. Thanks Shimozu for starting the game and giving it your best.
Can't wait for the highlight for the game :) except the hotel internets can't stream very well. |

Regarding the lack of names, that was intended. Simply because we couldn't guarantee that everyone would actually show up, and it would be a waste of a perfectly good shirt if that happened. As to the numbers missing, that was on me. I just assumed that the printers would assign random numbers to those shirts, seeing as I didn't provide any specifics, but they didn't. It was up to me to make sure there was no misunderstanding, and I failed to do that. Sorry.
If we do this again, it would be best if the team could secure its own named shirts. Each unit would be pretty cheap, so it's not too much to ask, and that way you could design them from scratch, and not have some lame dev like me do it. It also just looks much better to have names on the back.

The short bit on the stream was neat (just before the 4 hour mark on Thursday's stream), but a lot of the clips or trimmed almost too short, and there was next to no use of the behind goal gopro except the one where I forgot how wide a full size goal was and tried to dive across but couldn't quite reach :(
And the white balance on the video was off, I don't know how easy that is to correct with video as compared to still photos.
I thought CCP was snapping oodles of photos or did they give them all to you to sort out? Or did you just bring your own camera? I had brought mine but left it in the bag once I got on field as there were already 2-3 cameras going at it pretty good. |

Cool, though I would have turned the shutter up a little higher personally, 250 is a little slow for soccer, but I'm also used to a 300mm lens so I need the faster shutter. I guess it all depends on what the ISO was at and how noisy the ISO got at higher levels.
I want to tag myself and my brother but it seems I would need to add him as a friend and I don't know how many random players he would accept as friends just to tag some pictures. Thats why I like group albums like this posted on event/company/product pages as it is much easier to tag, all that is needed is to like that page.
Or I might download a few of the pics we are in and repost them in my own album from my fanfest trip. |

I wish I would have been there on time, and that I had played goalie in the last few months or had even played on a full size field in the last couple years. Considering the last 15 minutes of the first half when I got onto field was my warmup I didn't do terrible, but I kept forgetting how much wider the goal was compared to my typical 6v6 indoor league. And it was kinda dark, and my knee was bum, and I found out after the fact I missed the best Aurora show in decades during the game :(
But enough excuses, I probably won't be back next year as I am nearly completely broke now, still no job (couple more interviews lined up this week), so vacation and money will be a thing to keep a tight reign on the next year or two to recoup from the last 9 months without any income.
But maybe in 2 years I'll come out again, when it is in May and a little greener and less cold windy snow. |

You mean that it wasn't a corner? I think I remember the shot you are talking about, woulda been a nice upper 90 if I didn't get a hand on it to put it off the post and out, and then they gave us a goal kick instead of a corner.
But there was another time later they gave you guys a corner when it should have been a goal kick so it all balanced in the end. As for the northern lights, it was my bad for not looking it up ahead of time already knowing it was going to be a clear night sky. |

I just had the same thought when I looked at a few of the pictures, would like to see how awful I was doing at leaving far post open nearly every single time (being used to much smaller indoor goals).
And I can't wait to do this again at some point, but lack of money and job situation will prevent me from doing next year and maybe even the year after. I might be able to do Eve Vegas next year, but there aren't enough devs in attendance to pull of something like this there :( |

Hey guys. Sorry about the delay, didn't have the thread notifying me anymore. Basically there's been no development with the footage, so sorry about that as well :P I know I promised stuff and whatnot, but to be honest this doesn't really qualify as a high priority project.
The camera operator was quite actively stopping and restarting the recording, so the game is split into dozens of separate media files. This means that someone would have to cut them together before anything could be done with it. Also, it wouldn't look seamless due to the missing parts.
If someone wants to play around with the footage we could look into options of getting it to you. It's about 13 gigs I believe, which would be a pain in the ass to transfer through interwebs. :P
