I learned today that I am not good at PVP. No, actually I'm terrible at it. I don't understand the mechanics, it's difficult to watch modules, distance to ship and overall the GUI is pretty difficult for a beginner pvp pilot. Did I launch drones? Is the ship in range? Did I overheat my module? Did I stop overheating? Too many variables to keep track and in too many places and it moves so fast I forget what I'm doing!
I even had a decent fit and I still can't take down a simple destroyer hull. I got close, but I didn't notice he flew outside my rocket range because I was watching the hull.... bleh. How do you do it? Congrats to those with the patience to learn this, I think I prefer shooters and aiming with a mouse.
PvP solo is like playing eve on Ultra Difficult. Don't do it! Join a fleet. I do better in fleets. |

You learn.
You go 'oh that fit failed.. well lets try again but maybe if I do this...' practice, practice, practice. or you join a pvp school. There are plently that will teach you about fittings, solo pvp, group pvp, etc. Mostly its trial and error and reseach

I'm trying to skill up my pvp, what better way then going up against FW pilots?
I'm sure carebears are ez targets but I am trying to learn flying mechanics, when to orbit when to pull back etc etc |

Well the fit is solid, I can't do better, if you can make a suggestion how to make it better please do. I think I need better piloting skills not a better fit. |

If I keep up this rate of fail, I will blow up around 10 ships an hour or more. Good for the economy sure, but I feel like my piloting skills are not improving much... I wish I could pause and play back my fights. I guess I could use fraps. |

Destroyer hulls are paper thin usually, while they have more dps. I can tank the dps, sorta, but in this case instead of killing his hull, like i should have done, I allowed him to fly outside my rocket range while he continued to shoot my ship. |

Certain ships beat certain ships. I don't know what your working assets look like but usually strategy in EVE involves switching hulls more than switching fits. Or switching target hulls to one your hull was designed to beat. Or play EVE as it has come to be defined as. Gank em.

I play drunk a fair amount so I like to have the modules, drones, targets and selected item really close to each other to minimize the amount of distance to cover with the mouse, I always try to have modules in the same place in the ui on each ship I'm flying so my hand can remember where itt is and I can tell from my peripheral vision what's going on there (overheating being a great example). the blackened bit is another client with my booster/scouting toon that I can just click on to bring up if I need to (but I can still keep an eye on) .
Also , this might be of interest.

Mine is a bit different because of muscle memory, hotkeys, and I rely on the server's 1-second heartbeat to account for my laziness; I've had it set up similarly since '11. It's what you said specifically. Rockets? Those are in-your-face weapons. If you're using short range weapons, distance from target is way more important than anything else, unless you're pulling the plug and looking for a way out - a point you already had in mind before you started, right? If you're going to lose control of range, then use light missiles, not rockets.
Take it from a freighter pilot. Even I know that.
Treason never prospers. What is the reason? Why, if it prospers, none dare call it "treason."

The somewhat lower-risk way that I took once I realized that the run-all-the-things, cap-stable mission fits I'd be using were doing me more harm than good was to outfit a cap-injected, active-tanked, MWD, drone-launching neutron blaster Brutix and take it into L3s. It's an absolutely horrible mission boat, but that was the whole point: It forced me to get used to pulsing (especially the MWD, because ~blasters~). I could flail and fail and chew through far too many cap boosters in relative safety, and stop once I got comfortable with that level of active management.
The advantages of that approach over the PVP approach are that you can isolate the problem of learning to manage your own ship until you're good at it, and the risk is comparatively low and rat spawns are far enough apart to make MWD management a thing that you have to worry about. The disadvantages are that you don't shake the PVP shakes, and you learn nothing about the current metas, or about which engagements to take and which to avoid and why.

This is a perfect example how high skill points(or decent fits) mean nothing without piloting skills.
Yes, for a beginner pvp in EvE is hard, solo pvp is even harder, but the rewards of mastering it make it all the sweeter. |

I hear ya loud and clear, I don't understand what happens to me though when I engage someone. My mind behaves differently. I know I have to keep range and be within a certain distance but I experience some sort of mental block caused by adrenaline??? I don't know I just need to fight through it, and remember to fire all the things, overheat all the things, keep in range all the things and watch my own shields and armor always... I'm still not flying with reflex gut feelings, it's still very much a "remember you need to do A before you do B" instead of just instinctively knowing to do it.
I use to forget to launch drones before when I engaged someone, is that typical? |

Eve was designed to punish solo play, it's monotonous, it's boring and repetitive on purpose. You are meant to team up.... My issue is finding fleets in my timezone and corps are not a good way to do that.
Incursions are a good way to earn isk, but I'm interested in earning experience, something very different. I want PVP experience both solo and in gangs. There are some good groups out there like the Spectre fleet, been flying with them and learning to about pvp but still there is no way to teach experience. You just have to do it over and over and humans are the most dangerous prey. |

Edit: Also about some people pointing out of practicing in missions somewhat... I agree with this one to an extent, i practiced a lot in 600 Mil cap not even close stable, but with boosters ( always to few ) nano ( yup for missions ) tempest fleet issiue... if i make a mistake i lose a more than half a Bil ship ( to rats ! )...
You practice a lot of micromanagment habbits that way and to keep your cool... But you can't practice real pvp situations in missions thou, just the brain to keep track of all things you need too... |

Everyone does better in fleets. The point of flying solo is to challenge yourself and become better on your own without needing a crutch. Nothing in this game has been more thrilling for me, personally, than solo pvp, whether I'm winning or losing.

Solo anything is even harder, scarier and unfair than all of the other ways
The trick is to make it hard, scary and unfair on your target
I get the impression the OP is looking for fair fights.

If you fly a Frigate against a Destroyer, you are doing it the wrong way around.

Whole point of existence of destroyers is to be hard counter to frigates. So when you are trying to learn fighting and it is frig vs dessie YOU should be in destroyer not in frigate. Sure, frigates kill destroyers. They also kill BS or caps. But they kill those things because their pilots do not learn anymore, they already know this stuff.
Baby steps is the key to pvp in Eve. You will faceplant a lot, you will lose a lot but at one point pieces of puzzle will fall into place and you will "get it".
Also you might want to simplify your fits at the beginning, fly more passive fits so you could focus on actual fight instead of having 20 things to take care of. Scram/web/ab in mids, plate/dc/(gyro/te) in lows, full gank highs and rigs to taste. This way you basically click point and web and start shooting and all you have to care about is range.

Most will never grasp the concepts involved. And id be willing to be 99% of the posters on this thread are doormats. The thing about EVE is most people never really get good at it. They either get more numbers and blob you, or they use a cookie cutter fit that occasionally works. Once you figure out the game though its pretty easy, you just must aspire to do so and not fall into the cookie cutter trap. As it stands its IMPOSSIBLE for me to lose in a 1v1 fight with cruiser sized hulls and below. If anyone wants to challenge this I accept all comers and will have it FRAPSed and posted for all to see how easy people are in this game.
My only sport now is getting into fights that are usually 10 v 1.
The thing to take away from this is learn the game. Don't follow the same cookie cutter crap everyone tells you that you have to do because thats just what it is crap.
Also if you'd like to learn from the best we have a corp in our alliance for aspiring pvpers such as yourself, where you will be able to learn proper gameplay and tactics. Not just the run of the mill "im a PVP god" because i have x amount of logi or im in a blob mentality the rest seem to have. |

It is definitely hard, I have also always struggled with solo pvp, but i'm getting better. There is just so much going on at once, especially with how fast frig fights can be, that I just can't pay attention to it.
Like others have suggested, I would highly recommend recording (Fraps is great) your fights. After the fight, review the video and try and see what you did wrong, and what you could have done better. Also learning what to engage in which ships is key. For example, I have a ship that i use tracking disruptors on and I don't engage missile ships with it because y advantage is nullified.
Try making a ship with a mwd, scram and web and then hunt down ships that you know are kiters. shouldn't be too hard to pop them since their tank is usually weak, and their long distance guns won't be so effective against you at close ranges.

Its from the 1964 American film Mary Poppins, more specifically the song "(Let's all fly) A Kite"; where in flying a kite is alluded to as being as much fun as neuting and pointing a Hulk.

Even the pros make mistakes they just make less.
Over time you get used to micromanaging everything. What i found useful for practice is doing my Pve in undertanked ships. SO you get used to keeping range, keeping up transversal, heating correctly etc.
The other way to do it is get a friend go onto SiSi and buy 100 ships and 1v1 each other. |

What I liked to do when I was learning to PvP all those years ago is to eliminate as much variables as possible during the fight. Yes, it was overwhelming for me as well for a good while, but I've learned in steps.
What do I mean by eliminating variables?
Well, if you want to forget about capacitor, fly ships that don't depend on capacitor (like passive tanked missile or projectile ships) and avoid fighting anything that can drain your capacitor and make you think about it.
Buffer (passive) tanked ships are also eliminating the need to pay attention to tanking modules (shield boosters and armor repairers).
Range of your guns should be a decision made when you plan the fit and your potential targets. For each ship there are only really two basic ranges - short range and long range. Use one ship for a while to get used to its short and long ranges and it will stick in your memory.
If you feel that managing drones in a battle is too much information to process at once at a given point of time (I used to regularly forget to even use drones in battle on numerous occasions myself), pick ships that do not have drone bays or whose drones are just a secondary helpful, but not critical weapon.
Movement can be eliminated as something you should think about with picking the right target for your ship (and fit). For example, if you plan to be faster than your target, you are the one who owns the space and dictates movement. Increasing your relative speed to you opponent's ship can either be done by kiting and having more speed than your opponent, or by lowering opponent's speed with stasis webifiers, warp disruptors (since the shut down microwarp drives) or energy neutralizers (since the drain capacitor from opponent's ship so that he won't have enough capacitor to turn on an afterburner or a microwarpdrive)
I've learned like that.... By flying the simplest ship that I could think of (passive tanked Drake) for a good amount of time. Then I've introduced more variables when I felt that I have mastered the ones already present.
I hope this helps

I've never understood the attitude some have to 1v1 pvp, thinking it's somehow pure or a reflection of skill. Running a camp or a bash can require awareness of activity in a whole constellation, leading 20 pilots into a wormhole for some tourism/terrorism/pve is another whole game. Solo pvp is mostly a lowsec thing for me, as much as possible i like it to be max dps vs a hauler. Endless frig-dessie-cruiser smackdown is only fun for a fortnight or so. The most profitable, exciting and significant-to-the-map engagements are small gang and big fleet action in sov null. Anyone who scorns these as only for those who follow orders is a bit stuck up, or has the sort of temperament that can't find a place in a group. The best solo pvper will never own a station, or a system or any territory. Relevance is relevance.

Just going to leave this here, I think it captures the general feeling of trying to calm down in pvp starting out.
As for me I like to pop into WHs scream "Everybody run! They are coming this way!" and then leave.
I think the biggest thing is just have fun, don't worry about kills/losses. Skill comes with time.
I've also heard it helps to buy your ship and fittings in bulk, 10 or 20 complete sets in a staging system so it cuts down on the time of getting everything set up. You can just throw it together quickly and get back out into the fight. |

Hi OP
Another nice way to solo PvP in EVE is to gank stuff in Highsec. As always it is completely different than other forms of PvP and you have to know some different game mechanics like how CONCORD and Faction Police react to aggression and security status.
You can gank with only one character or with a gank character and a scout. This depends a bit on what you want to kill. I list you some sources for more information on this if you are interested. If not, just ignore my post.
General information about ganking and tactics used to work in Highsec as a -10 char: http://www.minerbumping.com/p/blog-page.html
Tippas blog post on CONCORD response times: http://blog.beyondreality.se/TTK-CONCORD
We also have a corp (New Order Logistics) dedicated to new and old players who are interested in ganking. There you can try out or learn the business from some of our best gankers and if you like it you can join the fun.

You train into a cloaky bomber, read one post on how to fire bombs, and profit.
You train into a large alpha and shoot targets that cannot fire back.
Pretty sure that covers 90% of the PvP in EvE.

Everyone does better in fleets. The point of flying solo is to challenge yourself and become better on your own without needing a crutch. Nothing in this game has been more thrilling for me, personally, than solo pvp, whether I'm winning or losing. I realized you hit the nail on the head for me. Yes, I never have had a kill. But my solos fights, they are so much fun. I've taken on 4 ships, had 3 down to the hull before dying. Someday, I'm gonna kill some of them before I die......Someday...

Step One: Pick a ship with a natural high tank.
Step Two: Add to the tank with Tech 2 defense modules. But you won't need many because you are hunting noobs.
Step Three: Find a noob in a PvP area. You know the ones that write post about their first PvP experience and how much they love dying and how much they learned.
Step Four: Watch them pound on your tank with Tech One weapons. You can really troll them by being hull tanked so they think they will have a chance.
Step Five: Open fire at your leisure. If it is a rookie ship one volley from your Tech Twos should suffice.
remember you don't get XP from achievements, just from sitting around. XP= Skill. Skill = Gear. Gear = Profit.
Edit: Caught one spelling error, probably more.

One suggestion from the many threads of how to be a solo bomber.
"If you are looking for large numbers of potential kill mails i would take my bomber to fountain and wait for some big battles to erupt. Right now there are 2100 people in PNQ fighting each other. Get a nice little bomb into the middle of that blob while they are fighting and you might find yourself on hundreds of kill mails.
I once did that in the middle of a fight between blast and panda team years ago and ended up on dozens of blast capital kill mails. It can work if you get a good perch set up on the battle and wait until they are engaged. As long as you are nuetral to everone on the field it can be entertaining. "

So it is.
I am quite bad to and have to go a long way to break even. My mining alts have a hard time to keep my pvp expenses in check.
As Crumplecorn says: Check the killboards, check what was done to you. What equippment was used. Check the killboards of other fights. Compare the weapons, the charges.
Same as for miners: If the gankers always use Catalysts with void ammo, it is a wise idea to check what damage they do and what you need to counter this. Check for weaknesses. Void is close range, moving is wise.
In PvP keep those at distance. Greater ranges do less damage. I am playing a little more than a year and still there is stuff i understand better and better.
Always a good idea: check if you have enough ammo. I had an interesting fight when i ran out of ammo, cause i forgot to refill...

OP, I've been playing for about 6 and a half years, with breaks. Started PVEing with friends, my first taste of PVP was flying to meet some mates in my very first Hurricane, and taking a shortcut through Rancer. Guess how that turned out.
6 and a half years later, I still suck at PVP. I'm ok when I can fly a logi or recon in a fleet, but when it comes to Solo I'm freakin terrible.
On the other hand, I don't mind losing lots of cheap ships, and would rather fight and die than run away. So don't worry about whelping ships, its really not the end of the world, and can still be a lot of fun. After a few times, the "shakes" will drop to more handle-able adrenalin rush, and even when you die you can still have fun :) |

In real life even the best solo "gladiator" tended to do poorly aka die when outnumbered by as few as 2 simple badly trained conscript soldiers with pointy sticks lol. Nah its Deathmatch FPS and LOL style gaming where teams are even and access to weapons is "fair". The antithesis of survival.
Or, you know, chess, tennis, or any other actual competitive endeavor that our society actually places value on. |

EVE is simulating a futuristic high tech (but still virtual) world in a perpetual state of war, not a sport. Nothing wrong with solo pvp but the game is balanced along the lines of 'more is always better', like actual real life and unlike sports. That's what some of us like about the game, the 'fair' fight is the one where you live and the other guy dies.

Yes, I understand what EVE is. It's perfectly nice to like the game.
It doesn't make one a higher class of gamer to like unstructured games over competitive ones, which is a sentiment I see repeatedly in this post and elsewhere on the site. |

You have it backwards. NO ONE chest thumps louder than 'solo' PVPrs (in this game or any game). I mean, some of them are so full of themselves because of their prowess in making other people's ships explode they make this guy look like he's not an arrogant jerk who hogs the ball (lol). The truth is, nothing any of us does in a video game amounts to a hill of beans and everyone knows that...execpt some solo pvprs...and Kobe Bryant

On the front page of this site, I don't see any posts that are chest thumping solo PvPers saying really anything at all.
I do see a lot of posts containing chiefly self-congratulatory messaging among EVE veterans for, well, just being EVE veterans.
As someone trying to get a feel for what the EVE community is like, I have to say this site does not present it in a favorable light. |

Your society.
Sports are measures of natural ability over trained skill, and actively remove any freedom of thought from the so-called competition.
In short, sports are games for the weak-minded.
"assembling a gang in an online game" has nothing to do with survival, or even what we are talking about.
Go back to your TV, sportsfan.

The sheer scope of the PvP is what draws so many in. Most other games have PvP in an arena of some varying description with few consequences, and (this is key) few variables. EVE PvP is very similar to actual strategy in real conflicts, obviously not in impact, it is still a game; but the freedom and creativity EVE PvP allows is absolutely amazing. You're not plopped down in front of an opponent in honorable 1v1 (or 2v2, 4v4 whatever) space bushido combat in an arena. You have a galaxy full of people, resources, and geography to use and exploit against whoever is, or will be, blinking red on your overview.
In other PVP games, you employ tactics. EVE gives you the freedom to strategize.
Also, there's exploding spaceships. That's cool too.

Im probably exaggerating in my above statement.
But can you show me a sportsman with something useful or interesting to say?

This sounds like the excuses and rationalization of someone who didn't make the team or watched too many cliche movies about jocks and nerds.
Anyone who's been a contributing member of a decent high school athletics program would find your claims not only wrong but mildly offensive.
I find that without a good mob to provide one for them, most people would have no mentality at all.

You lost me at "missions"
In that case, I'd go with Schmata Bastanold's advice: start with a simple, passive ship and scale up as you get more comfortable.
Oh, and you'll always forget to launch drones. I've forgotten to do that while piloting drone boats--not that I claim any mastery of PVP at all. I'm still pretty bad.
But as a professional musician told me, what makes a pro is not whether you make mistakes, but how you recover from them. You'll always make mistakes. It's helped me to laugh at them.

Say it out loud to yourself as you warp in. Run through the list:
"Damage control and hardeners on, loading EM rockets, target range is 6000 meters" etc.
Ever wonder why FCs say these things? It helps bring the focus back to what you are doing instead of the jitters. It's not because pilots can't remember to turn on their own damage control (usually).
