Someone who's been 2 some years in their newbie corp owns the plain "Dahak" name.
Makes me sad, 'cause as much as I <3 Earth2150, nobody knows the reference and they think it's just some random number string.
I don't like random number strings :(

Haha, if this were the case you'd hear the cries of thousands of bazaar mules, suddenly silenced :P I've got a level 1 pally from 3 years ago, that I've never logged into since day 1, and my account has been down for 6 months at one point :P
The only time there was ever a deletion was during server mergers, where chars under level 10 were deleted if they hadn't been played in 3 months. That was a one-time event.
Most games have disclaimers that your account/characters can/will be deleted if inactive, but I've never heard of a game actually doing so. Rather than free up names for new players they'd prefer to keep accounts around in the off chance a player returns.

Because it was the first character I'd created, you nitwit. Nostalgia, if you will. Besides, I don't want some asshat stealing a variation of my name, as people are quite fond of doing so to run impersonation scams.

Only problem i have with names is the naming system for ships, u can pretty much use any symbol a keyboard can create i saw once on scanner a ships with the name "◘◘◘◘◘◘"
how the hell do you call that in fleet ops.

no no no no! i have a charector named syros davol that is my bank. he hasnt changed in quite some time. he has 30k skill points... but has 245 million isk. if he got deleted ccp would never ever hear the end of it

"Nikolai Nuvolari" was my first choice.
Admittedly, you have to be a loonie like me to use a Russian first name and an Italian last name for a character whose race's language is a hybrid of Japanese and Finnish...but hey, maybe everyone should be a little less l33t and a little more crazy.

QFT! That is exactly what will happen. Masses will start claiming all sorts of popular names and resell, and no there's really no need to transfer the char either. The seller and buyer only has to join up when the seller reprocesses the char and he/she can claim the name seconds later.
Plus even so some names represent a history even if it is an alt.
So I do not sign this idea. Keep the history of EVE like it is, don't start modifying it.

Some of us tend to like to use names consistantly over several games, me for instance alway use some form of "Frenzy" but unfortunately it tends to be quite a popular name so I hardly ever manage to get it. My reserve is Frenz which I usually get, after that Frenzi, Frenzee and Frenzie. All were already used in EVE and I was getting desperate so I used a 3. I regret using a number now especially as II used Frenzeee as my alt but hey ho.
Its a bit annoying that the names mentioned above all seem to be inactive people who never even left their npc corps.

CCP could provide a paid service both to transfer a taken name on a character with low SP's that has been inactive for some time to a new character or even to change the name of an existing Char you own. I know I would pay for something like this and it earns CCP more money :D

Names in use? Meh, so what. There's a whole list out there, and I got my first choice.
I'm not going to cry that there's already someone who's grabbed the character out of a book, that I thought of and thought would be cool.
Seriously, I cry every time I see yet another variant of characters from books, films, games or whatever.
It's almost worse than 'l33tdud3z 2314331123' or othre names that seem to have been deliberately set up to be unpronouncable.
So, rather than complaining at all the 'cool' names that are already taken, please instead start complaining at all the people who feel it's important to their EVE career to have a 'cool' name.

Way back when I was in the Pheonix Alliance in Venal we had two pilots one was Unforgiven and the other was Unforg1ven ,Note the 1 and the i, Used to really screw thing up when they both turned up in the same gang.
My main objection to recycling names is that there will always be situations where the name of another persons avatar has some sentimental reason to you despite them not playing anymore.
A prime example of this is Madmanjake. A good RL freind of mine who died late last year. We built a memorial to him out of cans and bade him fly safe in the afterlife where the Eve sever never lags and you can always buy just the ship / module you want for a fair price. Seeing another pilot with his name would be weird and should that pilot ever stumble on the memorial we built (unlikely but possible) then that would be freaky.
Yes the one mill and 2 years barrier would help aliviate that but where would it stop? Soon a group of people would petition for the six months CCP promise to be the limit. In short be original and think of your own name.

I dont mind whining. All these whining thread make me in fact smile.
Dont like the corp name though for various reasons. One beeing that it means holy "holy war" which is quite stupid if you ask me.
Political correct peeps might also have problems with jihad beeing particular the holy war of muslims against unbelievers. Dont care much about this though. Just wonder if this is your idea of a "cool" name.

Maybe try to come up with a creative name?
I know Nafri is not perfect, would have prefered Nafri Iaaoke, but forgot that you cant change name after creation anymore
